PARISH OF CHARDSTOCK 1911 CENSUS RG14/2501 The census was carried out on the night of Sunday April 2nd, 1911 and followed the format of the previous censuses taken since 1871. The head of the household still had to be defined as did the relationship to the head of each person staying in the house that night. The gender of each person was also recorded. Accurate ages were required throughout and were taken from the person’s last birthday. For infants under one year, the age was recorded either in months (m), weeks (w) or days (d). “Where Born” had to be completed by giving the county and town or parish of birth. The expanded list of infirmities introduced in 1871 was retained, but has been blanked out on the copies of the census now available in the public domain. The number of rooms occupied by each household had to be recorded. The Occupational Status of each person (if applicable) had to be shown as Employer (Er), Worker (W) or Own Account (OA). Also people working at Home (H) had to be recorded. New features introduced for 1911 were a requirement to record the postal address of the dwelling. Also, married women, whose husbands were still living, had to record the length of the marriage in years , the number of children born to the marriage and the number still living when the census was completed. It should be remembered that in 1896 county boundary changes resulted in the transfer of Chardstock from Dorset to Devon and Wambrook from Dorset to Somerset. An analysis of the recordings for Chardstock is tabled below, together with comparisons for each census since 1841. The Boarding School/College (1861 to 1881) and the Industrial school (1861 only) have been excluded from the figures. Also a formerly detached part of the Parish of Chardstock at Crawley had been transferred to Membury by 1901. It remained in the Ecclesiastical Parish of Chardstock and was included in the 1901 transcript (11 households and 48 persons), but was excluded from the 1911 census Parish of Chardstock (excluding schools) Age Group 1841 1851 1861 1871 1881 1891 1901 1911 Under 10 357 360 284 373 290 248 229 205 (19.8%) 10 to 19 302 284 287 283 252 247 203 196 (19.0%) 20 to 29 191 186 161 184 150 150 131 140 (13.6%) 30 to 39 166 154 140 146 128 115 112 129 (12.5%) 40 to 49 135 146 131 151 127 122 105 123 (11.9%) 50 to 59 102 112 120 132 114 98 108 103 (10.0%) 60 to 69 73 73 88 83 101 83 87 69 (6.7%) 70 to 79 59 55 49 55 47 47 56 56 (5.4%) Over 80 16 6 10 7 19 16 17 12 (1.2%) Total 1401 1386 1270 1414 1228 1126 1048 1033 No. of households 273 295 296 302 275 267 251 258 Average persons per household 5.1 4.7 4.3 4.7 4.7 4.2 4.2 4.0 Uninhabited dwellings 15 7 8 5 21 14 21 N/A Due to the way in which the 1911 census was completed, it is not possible to identify dwellings in multiple occupancy, nor was any record made of uninhabited dwellings. The 1911 census recorded 502 male and 531 female persons, compared with 501 male/547 female for 1901 and 565 male/561 female in 1891. NOTES Transcription of the 1911 census was made by members of CHRG from images of the original documents. When extracting information from this transcript, the following points should be noted: The Parish of Chardstock was subdivided into two Enumeration Districts, equating to the North and South Tything of the Parish. Frank Apsey of Hook Cross was the Enumerator for the North Tything and William Beviss of Fordwater for the South Tything. The Chardstock census of 1911 was the first to be completed by the head of the household, rather than the Enumerator. Consequently there was a greater lack of consistency with some people being recorded with the Christian name by which they were known, rather than the name by which they were baptised. The Occupational Status of each person (if applicable) had to be shown as Employer (Er), Worker (W) or Own Account (OA). There was clearly considerable confusion about when and how this notation was to be used with many cases of information either being incorrect or missing. Also there was a general lack of understanding regarding the term “working at Home (H) “. The postal address had to be recorded for each dwelling and this created further confusion. Dwellings at the southern end of the South Tything were geographically located in the Civil Parish of Chardstock, the Ecclesiastical Parish of All Saints and the postal town of Axminster. It is not surprising that this led to many errors, mainly affecting where people were recorded as having been born. The information required of married women was sometimes completed by widows, and occasionally by widowers. This was crossed out by the Enumerator, but has been included in this transcript, as it is information useful to researchers. There are some cases where the return has been incorrectly completed. “Notes” have been added to correct any obvious errors. The Nationality of each person had to be recorded. Every person entered on the Chardstock census was “British subject by parentage”. For the “Relation To Head” column relationships are given in full wherever space permits. When it does not, the following abbreviations are used: Dau Daughter GSon Grandson GDau Granddaughter GFather Grandfather GMother Grandmother SonLaw Son-in-Law DauLaw Daughter-in-Law MothLaw Mother-in-Law FathLaw Father-in-Law BroLaw Brother-in-Law SisLaw Sister-in-Law Shortening of forenames has been avoided wherever possible with full names being given in the transcription. Also, full stops have not been used in names, thus Wm. C. Larcombe in the census return appears as William C Larcombe. This measure is designed to assist word search software programmes. By the same logic the town or Parish of birth is given in full, whenever possible. In the transcription the column headed “Condition” in the census return uses the abbreviations M for Married, S for Single and W for Widow or Widower. In cases where other research has produced an alternative to the transcribed version, that alternative is shown alongside the transcribed version in [ ] brackets provided the alternative has an equal or greater likelihood of being the correct or preferred version. To save space and achieve consistency, the place of birth is given first, followed by the county, indicated by the use of the “Chapman County Code” system.
