On the edges are C19 historic orchards, bounded by mature hedgerows, and several farmsteads. The orchards are a particularly strong landscape feature in terms of social history and culture as they represented an intensively productive use of land, providing cider for the labouring classes while also allowing the grazing of sheep and poultry. There are many listed buildings but most prominent are the Church and Cadbury Court at the historic core around which development is concentrated. The southern edge of the Conservation Area is characterised by the parkland setting of the Court. Under the ownership of Sir Archibald & Lady Langman the estate introduced scientific methods of farming in the 1930’s. The Langman’s prosperity, as a result of this innovation, is evident in the provision of the new village hall opposite Glebe House on Woolston Road. Although most of the other farms have been converted to residential use, Manor Farm remains the manufacturing base for renowned Montgomery Cheddar and Ogleshield cheeses. The River Cam, which rises in Yarlington, runs along the western edge of North Cadbury and through Brookhampton.

Progress of Works in Detail Key Projects (pages 6 to 10) SRA 2016-17 Enhanced Programme (pages 11 to 21) INTRODUCTION In 2016-17, Somerset Rivers Authority (SRA) spent just over £6million on actions designed to give Somerset an extra level of flood protection. This end of year report explains where the money came from and how it was spent. It also gives information about projects that have been delayed or had their funding moved to other activities. These details have been provided because the SRA wants people to know what it has achieved across the county – and it wants to be properly accountable. The SRA raises extra money to deliver extra work. Schemes are prioritised for SRA funding on the basis of the main objectives in Somerset’s 20 Year Flood Action Plan, which was developed in response to the floods of winter 2013-14. This report is divided into two sections. Performance covers delivery overall and by funding source, plus a table summarising 2016-17 finance; Progress gives more details about major projects, and smaller actions grouped according to SRA workstream – Dredging & River Management, Land Management, Urban Water Management, Resilient Infrastructure and Building Community Resilience. Somerset’s approach is uniquely joined-up. This report details just one year of the SRA’s extra work.     LOPEN EYE Lopen Parish Newsletter SEPTEMBER 2018 LOPEN FLOWER FESTIVAL A HUGE SUCCESS! With the theme of Birds of the Bible, the flower festival in All Saints Church was a huge success. There were many impressive floral displays accompanied by appropriate bird song to greet the visitors, some from as far afield as Bridport and Axminster. What a talented group of ladies we have! Supporting the flower displays were a plant stall, raffle, cake stall and refreshments in the Sunday School Room. The weather was kind to us so we had many visitors and the event raised a total of £1,834.81 for the church - a stunning result! A big thanks to Liz Constable and her team of volunteers.   • Stone Family Documents the Stones of Chipstable, Somerset
    1 STONE FAMILY DOCUMENTS THE STONES OF CHIPSTABLE, SOMERSET These family documents were found in the estate of Elizabeth Boyd Bond Evans of Cambridge, England (deceased December 2012). They were obtained at auction at Cheffins of Cambridge for John C. Stone II by Elizabeth Howard in July 2013. Most of the documents relate to descendants of Richard Stone of Clayhanger, Devon and Chipstable, Somerset, who died in 1653. Richard’s estimated date of birth is late 1570s, e.g. 1579. His will was obtained from the UK Archives and names his descendants. The will of the widow of his eldest son John (Richord Parkhouse Stone) also was obtained from the UK Archives and helps define some of Richard’s descendants. Richard was married twice. The name of his first wife, whom he married about 1600, remains unknown. Six children were born to this first marriage, of whom four married and three produced heirs. The two female lines of descent have been difficult to establish, but the lone male heir who had offspring, Emanuel Stone, had nine or ten children. The line of descent from Emanuel’s oldest son and heir, Richard Stone 1640 (baptized in Chipstable), can be traced to the present day. The absence of 16c parish records and paucity of 17c records in Chipstable and Ashbrittle (due in large part to the civil war of the 17c) have made it impossible to determine accurately the lines of Emanuel’s other eight or nine children with any accuracy. Richard’s second marriage was prior to 1640 to a woman named Eleanor (possibly Eleanor Farthinge who was born in Clayhanger in 1604).
