Chardstock Marrs to 1850 CHARDSTOCK ST. ANDREWS CHURCH - MARRIAGES Source: Chardstock Parish Registers and Bishop’s Transcripts Dates: 1579 to 1582 from Bishop’s Transcripts 1597 to 1837 transcripts from Parish Registers, except period April, 1710 to January, 1717. Prior to 1653 only the Bride and Groom's names are recorded. After 1653 the place of residence was given if outside the Parish and, in some cases, the father of either the Bride or Groom was also recorded. From 1754 some occupations were shown. Additional information has been incorporated for the period March, 1809 to February, 1813 to help fill in the gaps in the Parish Register. 1837 to 1911 transcripts made by CHRG members from photocopies of the original Parish Registers held at Devon Records Office. The information shown on these transcripts has been expanded to cover full details of the Bride and Groom, together with the respective father’s name/occupation and the names of the witnesses. It is suggested that researchers refer to the separate PDF for All Saints Church as this church was also located in the civil Parish of Chardstock. While every effort has been made to ensure that the transcripts are as accurate as possible, researchers are strongly advised to consult the original copies at Devon Record Office and to use these transcriptions only as a guide to what these sources contain. When using this site, the following points should also be borne in mind: Abbreviations have been avoided wherever possible and full stops have not been used in names, thus Wm C. Watts in the register appears as William C Watts in the transcription. This measure is designed to assist word search software programmes. After the transcripts of marriages, there is a separate date listing for information on marriages additional to that contained in the Parish Registers. This generally takes two forms - either someone with Chardstock connections marrying outside the Parish (sometimes referred to as “strays”) or the announcement, usually in a newspaper or magazine, of a marriage at Chardstock. The sources of this information are varied, but are always given. In cases where other research has produced an alternative to the transcribed version, that alternative is shown alongside the transcribed version in [ ] brackets, provided the alternative has an equal or greater likelihood of being the correct or preferred version. • Chardstock Baptisms to 1879
CHARDSTOCK ST. ANDREWS CHURCH - BAPTISMS Source: Chardstock Parish Registers and Bishop’s Transcripts Dates: 1579 to 1582 from Bishop’s Transcripts 1597 to 1846 transcripts from Parish Registers, except periods March 1707 to April 1713, July 1713 to August 1714 and August 1714 to June 1716 for which no records are available. 1847 to 1879 transcripts have been taken from photocopies of the Bishop’s Transcripts of the Chardstock Parish Registers, held in Wiltshire Records Office. Where these were unclear, they have been checked against microfiches of the originals, held in Devon Records Office, and altered as appropriate. There are a number of inconsistencies between the two versions; for instance Susan Cozins in the Bishop’s Transcript appears as Susan Cousins in the Parish Register. The Wiltshire records for years 1850, 1856, 1858 1862, 1864, 1865, 1868, 1871, 1873 and 1876 are missing, either because they were not copied originally or because they have been lost. These gaps have been made good from the Devon Records Office, and are included within this transcript. Both Parish Registers and Bishop’s Transcripts are given for the years 1847, 1848, 1849 and 1850. The researcher is strongly advised to consult the original copies at Wiltshire or Devon Record Office, and use these transcriptions only as a guide to what these sources contain. When using this site, the following points should also be borne in mind: Abbreviations have been avoided wherever possible and full stops have not been used in names, thus Wm C. Watts in the register appears as William C Watts. This measure is designed to assist word search software programmes.

RECOMMENDATION: Approval with conditions Crown Copyright and database rights 2020 Ordnance Survey 100023746 Committee Date: 4th November 2020 Yarty Target Date: (Chardstock) 20/0375/FUL 12.06.2020 Applicant: Mrs Gill Keam Location: Fordings Chardstock Proposal: Construction of pitch roof and dormer window to existing garage for the conversion and provision of ancillary living accommodation. RECOMMENDATION: Approval with conditions EXECUTIVE SUMMARY This application has been referred to Committee following a Chairman’s Delegation meeting so that Members can consider the impacts from the ancillary accommodation on the area. The application proposes the conversion and upward extension of an existing garage to form ancillary living accommodation. The application does not propose a separate dwelling and if consent were granted, planning permission would be required for the building to be used as a dwelling independent of the Fordings. The site lies with the AONB, adjoins the Conservation Area and is adjacent to two listed buildings. The applicant is not required to demonstrate a need for the extension or to justify its size (although they have advised it is to enable the applicant to care for an elderly parent), and it is for Members to consider the physical and visual impact from the extension that represents additional living accommodation for the main house, albeit in a detached form. The main impacts are from the addition of the roof, dormer window and changes to the appearance of the garage.

  • Axminster's 'Natural Hinterland': Parishes, Villages and Hamlets
Axminster’s ‘Natural Hinterland’: Parishes, Villages and Hamlets Introduction Axminster is not only a market town with a very long history in its own right; it is both a civil parish and an ecclesiastical one (the two entities now cover largely, but not precisely, the same geographical area, but the boundaries have frequently been changed over time). Its strategic location is based on two geographical ‘facts on the ground’: the town overlooks the confluence of the Axe and the Yarty rivers, some 5 miles from the sea; and it sits at the junction of the ancient ‘Portway’ trade route and the Roman Fosse Way1. As the population density grew, these facts made it a natural focus for surrounding settlements, and in 1204 King John granted the Lord of the Manor the right to hold regular markets at Axminster. The question then arises: how far does this ‘natural hinterland’ spread? This map, from the 1950s, represents an area measuring about 16km (or 10 miles) from south to north (from Beer to Stockland), and about 13km (or 8 miles) from west to east (from Stockland to Forde Abbey). 1 There is scope for debate as to whether the Roman road which passes through Axminster formed part of the Fosse Way itself, or was simply one of several ‘feeder’ roads which joined the Fosse Way to the north of Chard. © Axminster Heritage Ltd. Due to COVID-19, we have had to remove some of our interactive elements and interpretation to ensure the safety of staff and visitors. This includes our ‘paddles’ which provide information on the wonderful objects you will see around the Museum. We have produced this booklet to help you find out more about the objects as you go round the Museum. There is a guide to each floor with information on cases and objects, which are individually numbered. Some cases have labels in them so these do not appear in this booklet. We hope you enjoy your visit to the Keep Military Museum. 3 First Floor Map: 1685 - 1958 Welcome to the First Floor! Please follow the route clockwise around the floor.
