Welcome to Old Northamptonians RFC 2019 / 2020
Today we welcome old rivals Lutterworth to Billing Road, both teams look to be ‘going for it’ judging by how well each has started the season. 4th vs 5th in the table will provide a very competitive encounter as each side sets out its stall for the rest of the season. ONs had a good start to the season & can certainly score points gaining try bonus points from every game to date. Having played & lost to the top 2 sides shows there is a way to go in the side’s development, as seen last week at Derby. On the positive side the boys ended that game strongly & pushed leaders Syston all the way. The coaching team have looked closely at correcting errors & how to deal with today’s threat of a Lutts team on the up. Recent games between these two sides has not proved positive for the ONs so today will be a big test for where the home side aspirations can realistically lie.
Today’s referee is George Littlechild from the Central Federation. The spotlight the RWC has put on referees shows what a hard job they have to do even with video replays. Please consider this, the ref can only give what he sees and how he sees it, all must respect his decisions as final and right whatever our own opinions.
ONs 2nds encounter with Lutts 2s has been cancelled so they now venture into the land of pork pies & Pedigree Chum as Melton Mowbray have stepped in to provide a good test. ONs 2nds have had some excellent results in their Merit League & were unlucky to narrowly lose last week’s friendly against the Ath. We wish success today to ONs Academy (U18s) in the National Cup1st round away at Bedford Blues Athletic Colts - not a kind draw for either side as both traditionally do well in this competition. The Academy had a good warm up last week with a one sided 93-0 win over Casuals in the League. Thanks to both NSB & the Academy management they are benefiting from the continuing co-operation with NSB regarding player ‘release’.
The new balcony has been very well used, but we await to see how many fair-weather supporters we have when it rains! The new changing rooms are in the final stages & should be finished by the middle of next month, a great facility it will turn out to be. Let’s hope the weather improves to allow for an open free flowing game. Have a great day today & let’s hope we’ll be celebrating England’s progress to the RWC Semi Final!!

Just the top 2 sides are now unbeaten, Syston lead, having gained try bonus points in all their games vs Derby’s 4, Both ONs losses were to these 2, with Derby looking the more impressive on their plastic pitch. Interesting to note they have kept a consistent squad of 18 with just 3 other players appearing once for them – compare to the 31 who’ve already appeared for ONs (& we picked up even more injuries last week so 34 after today!).
Oundle lie just behind in 3rd having only lost to leaders Syston & disposing of struggling Tows last week. Despite losing one more game ONs only sit above today’s visitors from Lutterworth as a result of more bonus points, so another heroic effort with be needed today as Lutts look very strong again this season.
Having lost their first 5 games Wellingborough beat fellow strugglers Olney, so now all the bottom 5 sides have won 1 game each with only bonus points separating them. 2 of those, Peterborough & Tows, play each other today so there will be one of those moving away from the relegation zone. The 4 sides above them are all on their day can be very strong, showing what a very competitive league this season is & will be all the way.
