Welcome to Old Northamptonians RFC 2018 / 2019

Today we welcome to Billing Road our local rivals Kettering RFC from up the A43 for another local league clash. The ONs will be playing purely for bragging rights while revisiting a long-established rivalry between our two clubs. However, for our visitors it is an opportunity to reaffirm their top 2 League slot. We have long been aware that Kettering has had aspirations to move up the league structure, this season it looks like they will get their wish, either as champions or to have a shot in the play-offs. Their potential has been apparent for a number of seasons & now it is likely they may get their ‘reward’. We wish them well if/when they get there, but don’t envy the ‘step up’ required for, & to stay in, the League.

The game back at Kettering in October was relatively close until the last quarter when the home side showed their class ending up worthy winners 39:10. As for most of this season, the ONs had a young side out that day, blooding recent Academy players, gaining experience for a push in the league over the next few seasons. It is hoped that the experience gained in recent months & the return of missing injured players will mean the result will be a lot closer than it was in October. Gaining bonus points for tries has been a bit of a problem but as our positive points difference shows the ONs defence has still been working well. Recent games against Towcestrians & have shown we are working with small margins, it may just require a bit more luck & passion to get a welcome result against our local rivals as there are signs that we could be on the verge of an upset. May the best team win on the day!

Today’s referee is Andy Oliver from East Midlands Referee’s Society, please show him due respect & support his decisions, he has a very difficult job with no help from assistants/TJs or recourse to “VAR” (& as last Saturday shows even the top pro refs still get decisions wrong!).

The ONs 2nds are away at Kettering 2s in the Merit table game which, if the result favours the away side, should confirm a top finish in the table. This season, after a rocky few years, the ONs 2nd team have returned to the standards of a few seasons back. A combination of youth & experience, as well as players stepping down from the 1st team, they are playing attractive winning rugby. Thanks go to the captaincy of Joe Rolleston & the management of John Gray for this turnaround. I feel a there could be a good run in the Lewis Shield beckoning - once Daventry & Long Buckby actually get to play their preliminary round!

Last week’s 3rd team win over Long Buckby meant they have now won their East Midlands Merit League, congratulations to all invloved. I hope they can continue their winning ways against Kettering 4s today. Having watched them over recent weeks their style of play exceeds that you would normally expect from a 3rd team & there is a good buzz coming from this section of the club, in no small part due to the efforts of StuMac, Tom Gregory & Manager Mills. But after match cheeseboards with the port??

At the time of writing the Vets Cup game for the ONs is still TBA but like Kettering, we are in the fortunate position putting out multiple sides most Saturdays, bucking the national trend. A credit to both clubs who must be doing something right! I will say nothing about the Academy as there is an article specifically relating to them elsewhere in the Programme - except that the club is very proud of their achievements & good luck in the National Cup tie at Olney.

Finally, some dates for the diary: Feb 19th Alliance Cup against NSB 7:30pm KO: March 2nd VPs Lunch prior to the game: March 15th ONs Benevolent Fund Dinner. Have a good day whatever the result, may the best team win!

PS Our absent President Jack sends his regards & best wishes from Spain (again….).

Today’s visitors continue to vie for top spot with Paviors however who will end up promoted as Champions or get in play offs as runners up is still to be decided - ONs will be determined today to put a spanner in the works. Kettering’s postponed game due to Melton’s apparent lack of front row will be played on 23rd Feb as the other sides put their feet up to watch the Wales v decider!

Tows are showing a resurgence of form with another big win over promotion chasing Oundle, so those 2 along with Peterborough and perhaps Lutterworth & OWs will continue to pressure the runaway top 2.

With just 8 games remaining (or 9 in Melton’s case) it would require some extraordinary results for the bottom 2 to avoid relegation. Buzzard’s convincing win over strugglers Scouts moved them up a place giving them a glimmer of hope. This puts pressure on the 4 sides above them (including ONs) to bring in some more victories to ensure safety, but one never knows as it’s not over until that large lady warbles!

Saturday Kick offs: 3.00 pm Sept/Oct/Mar/Apr, 2.15 pm Nov – Feb An Update from ONRFC Academy from Coach Regan

The Academy has had a roller coaster ride of a season to date, however, remain in the hunt for all competitions. This includes defending the Oceanic Cup, as well as the EM the Referee’s Cup & the RFU National Under 18s Cup. The current playing record stands at 11 wins with just one loss. In all 44 different players have featured in the matches, including four Under 16’s players, all of whom added impact to the games they have featured in. Eight members of the current crop of U18s have stepped up into senior rugby this year making appearances for the Senior’s 2nd & 3rd teams. In addition. Also eight graduates from last year’s Academy have successfully gone on to make their first team debut this season This demonstrates how fruitful the structured pathway from Juniors through the Academy and into the Seniors has been – one of the key objectives since the Academy was formed

Ty Morton () and Mauro Almada () both made their academy debuts earlier this season playing on opposite sides!

Many of this squad have gone on to gain representative and Academy honours: Currently, the ON’s have 4 players involved with Nottingham’s Academy, 4 with Coventry’s Academy as well as 6 hoping to follow in Tom Collins & James Grayson’s footsteps with . Lastly a record 11 players have been selected for the East Midlands U17s squad. The Academy has also welcomed six new players to the ranks this year who have all proved to be vital in building the foundation of the squad. All these success’ have come from the lads themselves, through their own hard work, discipline and determination to succeed. *

The Academy have had to get used to travelling as, in their search for good opposition, 75% of their fixtures have been away this season! However, this has not stopped these lads racking up impressive victories away against & Solihull, Old Halesonians & Kenilworth respectively. However, this weekend the Academy face one of their toughest games so far this season against Olney in the 3rd round of the RFU National Under 18s Cup. They played Olney twice last year & came out on top both times but take nothing away from Olney as they were a well drilled, physical & skilful side who pushed the ONs to their limits. We are sure that this weekend’s game will prove to be much of the same.

* Head of Playing Richard Blank added that great credit should also go to Coach Regan for achieving this success & the management team of Colin Maitland & Mark Russell SPONSORS OF OLD NORTHAMPTONIANS R.F.C.
