If you’re reading this the day it popped into your inbox then there are 7 or 8 days to go before the big man clips one wide of square leg to reach his half century. He has chosen Wright’s Meadow as the venue. If you need directions, you are a moron. Saturday 27th August the date from 7.30 pm onwards. Season rewind – 1994/1995 This was the season which will always be fondly remembered by all those that watched it or played in it from 1st XV down to the 5ths and across to the Colts. Even the Vets, who would classify a match on the fourth pitch as an away game seemed to enjoy themselves though you’d never have guessed from looking at Ted Holmes and Terry Clancy. Following a dispiriting 1993-94 when we were relegated from Midlands Division 1, the board was swept as Midlands Division 2 was won and the Bedfordshire and East Midlands Cups were both regained, and both against our keenest rivals Stockwood Park who inflicted our only League defeat. On a pulsating last Saturday of the season ourselves and Broadstreet were locked together at the top of the table and as fate would have it, met each other at Wright’s Meadow. Broadstreet kindly gave up the 2nd XV home fixture to bring their three teams to Leighton. Kicking off before the main event, our 3rds and 2nds ran up handsome victories. The match itself was unbearably tense. Before the match it was felt Buzzards mat be handicapped by the absence of Nick Watkins who in the East Midlands Cup Final the previous Sunday had suffered a splosh of mud on his cheek. The specialists worked on him all week, but it was a race against time they were never going to win, so Mark Webster stepped forward to fill the number 10 jersey. His goal-kicking was eccentric to say the least but somehow the ball seemed to squirt its way over from the various trajectories in which Mark launched them. A late-ish penalty try awarded when Frippy seemed destined to score finally put enough daylight between the two sides and the title, promotion and the treble was won. A heady day indeed. One league below in Midlands East 1, Ampthill finished 5th and Biggleswade 8th whilst Wellingborough were relegated. One level further down, Luton were relegated from Midlands East 2 and three levels below us, Dunstablians finished 6th in East Midlands/Leicestershire 1. At the top of the tree Leicester won National Division 1 with Northampton relegated. The others in the top flight were: Bath, Wasps, Sale, Orrell, Bristol. Gloucester, Harlequins and West Hartlepool. Saracens won National 2 and Bedford emerged as winners of National 3. Perhaps the most spectacular fall since then has been suffered by Askeans from south east London. They were relegated from National 4 and now languish in Kent Division 2 at Level 10 of the League structure. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Old Buzzards Newsletter - January 2016 2 | P a g e Old Buzzards Newsletter August 2016 [email protected] New subscribers A fairly small list this month. Prior to calling for your memories of Dave Reeves that appeared in the last full edition I had contacted Meg to check she would be OK with me running with your stories. In replying to say she would be more than happy she provided a tale that merited a box of its own. “When Dave had his first heart attack his heart stopped so the medics got it going again with jump leads. All of the doctors and nurses were trying to get Dave to respond to know his brain was OK, but without luck. I asked if I could speak to him which I duly did. I said “Dave, Dave, come on quick. The game is over and the boys are on their way in”. It bought an immediate response and we had Dave back for another 14 years. Foreword by John Douglas, Chairman of the Adult Competition Review Steering Group 1.1 Over the quarter of a century since competitive league rugby was introduced, much has changed within rugby and in society as a whole. Within rugby, anecdotal and statistical evidence indicates that most clubs field fewer teams now than they once did. The socio-economic environment in which our clubs operate has changed beyond all recognition and the pace of change is likely to continue to increase. With it the requirements of players, supporters and club administrators – in other words, our customers – will also change. Predicting and satisfying those future requirements has been the overriding concern of this review.

  • Edition 10: 20Th September 2013
Edition 10: 20th September 2013 Rugby World Cup 2015 Lead Up and Legacy Activity The RFU launched the seven strands of its national Lead up and Legacy plan on October 31st 2012. The aim of this is to set out an overall framework against which national resource will be invested in the lead up to RWC 2015 with the aim of increasing interest and participation in the game. Whilst many Clubs, CBs, Schools, Colleges, Universities and other bodies are working hard to develop local projects to meet identified local need these seven strands are areas in which we will invest national resource to create change in Rugby communities across the country. It is hoped that those delivery bodies that have not yet identified their focus will focus in on these areas and take action to improve provision and opportunities against these themes. Six Regional Activation and Legacy Groups are now up and running and are working to add value to the seven strands and to engage partners from outside of the immediate rugby community in supporting the efforts of those within it. Each group is populated by representatives from CBs and from the wider community. Attached as an appendix to this CB update is a brief overview of progress against the seven strands along with listings of clubs/projects etc involved to date – this will be updated for each issue. In addition to the work against the seven strands strong working relationships have been established with England Rugby 2015, the Organising Body for the tournament itself, and an update on relevant areas are also included in the appendix.

OLD NORTHAMPTONIANS RUGBY UNION FOOTBALL CLUB FOUNDED 1923 OLD NORTHAMPTONIANS LEAD PARTNER SPONSOR: GROUND ENTRY FREE – PROGRAMME BY DONATION ONRFC Programme Sponsors: -------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to Old Northamptonians RFC 2019 / 2020 I would like to welcome all the players & supporters of West Bridgford, our opposition today, for what I’m certain will be another hard-fought game at Billing Road. Last season the ONs were victorious both home & away against our visitors, but recent results would suggest the ONs will have to play up to their strengths to maintain or improve on their current 5th place slot. West Bridgford are currently lying just one place below & with a game in hand so it’s definitely game on! Having had a few issues recently against large (Leicester) packs I’m sure the 1st team coaching team & squad will be working hard during the week to improve this area of the game in order to release a back line that can match any in the league. Today’s referee is Gareth Langley, Central Federation, let’s hope he encourages a more flowing game than last week at Wyggs! We also welcome Nuneaton U18s to Billing Road for a friendly against the ONs Academy. I had the good fortune to watch our U18s in the National Cup last week against Syston - one of Leicestershire’s finest - the 49:5 demolition shows what strength we have coming through & I am sure they will go far in the competition as it enters the National stages. Great work from the Academy coaching team bringing on our next crop of Old Northamptonians into the senior set up.

  • PGRFC Response to the RFU New Competition Proposals
PGRFC response to the RFU New Competition proposals Executive Summary • The proposed RFU structure addresses many issues, but too much regionalisation risks losing competitive matches and less matches, if Saturday loses the ‘this is the day I play rugby’ tag, risks player retention and would adversely impact on income and hence sustainability. • We suggest an alternative flatter structure with less geographical sub-division and leagues of 14 teams – we believe confining our opposition to Northern counties is appropriate. It meets player concerns on number of matches and travel time, would reduce our cost base whilst maintaining attractive fixtures to support club sustainability. It provides a guaranteed number of 1st XV home games sufficiently early to support planning of adequate match day income generating opportunities and provides a profile that would appeal to a range of club sponsors and ideally a title sponsor for the league. • If this is not feasible, the adoption of the RFU proposed structure is workable although reduced games at level 5 poses a threat to player retention and commercial sustainability. It would be considerably enhanced by the introduction of well policed, mandatory salary cap levels with clear severe sanctions for non-compliance and the adoption of an end of season play-off and League cup competition. • Wage inflation in the community game must be brought under control. If there is no change to the salary cap structure, and clubs are still allowed to opt out of the system it is difficult to see the current wage-inflation issues being managed with the resulting adverse impact on sustainability.
