Welcome to Old Northamptonians RFC 2019 / 2020

I would like to welcome all the players & supporters of , our opposition today, for what I’m certain will be another hard-fought game at Billing Road. Last season the ONs were victorious both home & away against our visitors, but recent results would suggest the ONs will have to play up to their strengths to maintain or improve on their current 5th place slot. West Bridgford are currently lying just one place below & with a game in hand so it’s definitely game on!

Having had a few issues recently against large (Leicester) packs I’m sure the 1st team coaching team & squad will be working hard during the week to improve this area of the game in order to release a back line that can match any in the league. Today’s referee is Gareth Langley, Central Federation, let’s hope he encourages a more flowing game than last week at Wyggs!

We also welcome Nuneaton U18s to Billing Road for a friendly against the ONs Academy. I had the good fortune to watch our U18s in the National Cup last week against Syston - one of ’s finest - the 49:5 demolition shows what strength we have coming through & I am sure they will go far in the competition as it enters the National stages. Great work from the Academy coaching team bringing on our next crop of Old Northamptonians into the senior set up.

Elsewhere the 2nd team has a friendly fixture away at , hopefully the opposition will actually field a side this week. The 2s have been having a rough time recently finding teams who can turn out on a Saturday, this certainly needs to be addressed by the RFU & our Constituent Body. Both the 2nds & 3rds were let down last week so ended up playing a hard-fought game between themselves, with the 2nds coming out on top. However, the 3rds should be encouraged by that performance to take into an away local vs BBOB 2nds in their Merit table. Always a close fought game and an interesting journey back from St Andrews Road!

The Ladies are continuing having success in both their league and cup campaigns. Their numbers are good & they’ve been getting some excellent wins. They have the additional support of a number of their own sponsors which all aids further integration into the senior club set-up.

I recall the West Bridgford committee went for a night-out in after last season’s fixture. It will be interesting if they repeat the same this year, it will say a lot about their taste & stamina if they do! We hope they & everyone else at the club this afternoon has a good day and may the best team win!

Syston remain top with a game in hand over Derby who they host today, so that outcome could have a major influence on the promotion race as the top 3 look to pull clear of the rest, though Lutts continue to impress.

ONs loss last Saturday drops them back to 5th; Wyggs played a one dimensional but very effective game which as predicted has lifted them to mid-table from an early season position near the bottom. Also, they like today’s visitors, have a game in hand due to be played next weekend so both could then leapfrog ONs. Just below them both Rugby Lions & Harborough are big tough sides who I’m sure will perform well on the heavy pitches.

The bottom four are now 9 to 16 points adrift of Peterborough, who despite some good performances & close games sit in 11th place. Tows have not won a game home or away for 2 months so have a must win home game with bottom side Wellingborough to ease their relegation worries, as fellow strugglers Olney & Melbourne both have very tough looking fixtures – though as I’ve said before there are no easy games in this league!!!
