Welcome to Old Northamptonians RFC 2019 / 2020

It is my great pleasure to greet over 100 guests for the first Vice Presidents luncheon of this season - a tremendous effort once again by Pip and Pete, to get this number of people sitting down to eat - hope we all have a good day. Today sees the return of league rugby to Billing Road, after the highs and one very big low of the Rugby World Cup finals in Japan (if you’re an supporter!). However, it was great to see the clubhouse absolutely packed from 8am last Saturday, with young and old there to support England, enjoying their pre match breakfast (solid or liquid!).

A very warm welcome to the officials, players & supporters of Melbourne, from - shire, both ONs 1st & 2nd teams opponents today. They are newly promoted this season & to my knowledge, we have never played them before - certainly not in the league. We currently lie 5th, Melbourne 10th but league positions will count for little today I’m sure. Last week ONs 3rds & 4ths did play but with differing outcomes, but ONs 1sts had a welcome break having suffered a disappointing loss in the horrendous conditions at Mar- ket Harborough the week before. Not only did this give some a deserved rest but im- portantly others of the many injured 1st team squad members a chance to recover.

We also welcome Colts, who will play the ONs Academy in the EMRU Referees Cup at the earlier kick- off time of 12.30pm. Our Academy has been enjoying a very successful season (yet again), they are unbeaten in their EM League and having despatched next Saturday are in the National Cup 2nd Round.

Thanks to East Referees Society for providing the match officials today: Andy Beckett in control of the 1sts & James Nimmo looking after the Colts, 2nd team ref is TBC. We hope they also enjoy their afternoon & any well-intentioned touch line advice/banter!

Let me sign off wishing everybody a great day & a reminder about the Annual President`s Christmas Dinner on Saturday 21st December, when are the visitors, by which time we hope to have the impressive new changing rooms open for business.

Peter “Jack” Doughty, Old Northamptonians RFC President

As Syston’s game was postponed Derby take over top spot with a narrow win over 3rd placed Oundle – it will be interesting to see what happens now their “all-weather” 4G pitch has disappeared down the River Derwent!

Lutts big win over struggling Olney means they move up to 4th with ONs dropping to 5th, having lost at Harborough as a result of a combination of not scoring enough points when dominant & then letting disputable decisions get the better of them. Just 5 points then separate the next 5 sides below them in the table, keeping it very tight in the chasing pack in the middle of the table.

All the bottom 4 have to date only managed 1 win each, though our visitors today have a game in hand, having also been called off 2 weeks ago. Wellingborough are starting to fight their way off the bottom beating fellow strugglers Olney 3 weeks ago & then getting a losing bonus point 2 weeks ago while just losing 10-5 to Peterborough. With Tows sure to improve their form & certainly Olney & Melbourne are better sides than their position shows, I can’t see the table ending as it is especially as the heavy pitches have their equalising effect.
