There are many photographs of adobe ruins, historic sites, and ranching, farming, and mining activities. 9 boxes, 4 linear ft. HISTORICAL NOTE The 1920s were a time of increased tourism in Arizona. These albums document two areas of interest to visitors: historic sites and economic development. ACQUISITION The photograph albums appear to have been compiled from photographs donated to the Arizona Historical Society by various people including Henry F. Ashurst and L.D. Walters during the 1920s and 1930s. ACCESS There are no restrictions on access to this collection.     From Exclusion to State Violence: The Transformation of Noncitizen Detention in the United States and Its Implications in Arizona, 1891-present by Judith Irangika Dingatantrige Perera A Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy Approved March 2018 by the Graduate Supervisory Committee: Jack Schermerhorn, Chair Leah Sarat Julian Lim ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY May 2018 ABSTRACT This dissertation analyzes the transformation of noncitizen detention policy in the United States over the twentieth century. For much of that time, official policy remained disconnected from the reality of experiences for those subjected to the detention regime. However, once detention policy changed into its current form, disparities between policy and reality virtually disappeared. This work argues that since its inception in the late nineteenth century to its present manifestations, noncitizen detention policy transformed from a form of exclusion to a method of state-sponsored violence. A new periodization based on detention policy refocuses immigration enforcement into three eras: exclusion, humane, and violent. When official policy became state violence, the regime synchronized with noncitizen experiences in detention marked by pain, suffering, isolation, hopelessness, and death. This violent policy followed the era of humane detentions. From 1954 to 1981, during a time of supposedly benevolent national policies premised on a narrative against de facto detentions, Arizona, and the broader Southwest, continued to detain noncitizens while collecting revenue for housing such federal prisoners. Over time increasing detentions contributed to overcrowding. Those incarcerated naturally reacted against such conditions, where federal, state, and local prisoners coalesced to demand their humanity. Yet, when taxpayers ignored these pleas, an eclectic group of sheriffs, state and local politicians, and prison officials negotiated with federal prisoners, commodifying them for federal revenue.

Caproni A Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy Approved April 2017 by the Graduate Supervisory Committee: Victoria Thompson, Chair Philip VanderMeer Dallen Timothy ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY May 2017 ABSTRACT This dissertation uses the narrative practice of chorography as a genre for assessing the history of placemaking in the Salt and Gila River region of central Arizona from the late seventeenth century through the mid-nineteenth century. Chorography concerns the descriptive representation of places in the world, usually of regions associated with a particular nation. Traditionally, chorography has served as a written method for describing geographical places as they existed historically. By integrating descriptions of natural features with descriptions of built features, such as ancient ruins, chorography infuses the physical landscape with cultural and historical meaning. This dissertation relies on a body of Spanish- and English-language chorographies produced across three centuries to interpret how Euro- American descriptions of Hohokam ruins in the Salt and Gila River valleys shaped local placemaking. Importantly, the disparate chorographic texts produced during the late- seventeenth, eighteenth, and early nineteenth centuries reflect ‘discursive continuity’—a continuity of thought spanning a long and frequently disregarded period in the history of central Arizona, in which ruminations about the ruins of ancient cities and irrigation canals formed the basis for what people knew, or thought they knew, about the little-known region. When settlers arrived in the newly-formed Arizona Territory in the 1860s to establish permanent settlement in the Salt and Gila River valleys, they brought with them a familiarity with these writings, maps, and other chorographical materials.

OGLE CHAPTER III EXTERMINATION-A FRONTIER PANACEA HE END of the Civil War resulted in a temporary dis­ T ruption and weakening of the military organization in the Apache country.· This situation was produced by a gradual mustering out of the California Volunteers and an order from the war department which ended the enlistment of new troops. To prevent the complete collapse of military control on the Apache frontier, the secretary of war made an exception to the order on May 20, 1865, and allowed the recruitment of a regiment of Arizona Volunteers. Six com­ panies composed of a total of three hundred and fifty men were immediately enrolled under the supervision of General McDowell. Half of the new troops were posted in southern Arizona and the others were moved to the Prescott area.! No military activity occurred in Arizona until Mc­ Dowell visited the district in December.

The extensive public participation and planning process for the Town of Florence 2020 General Plan began with the 2007 update of the Town’s General Plan Future Land Use Map, one of the most widely used figures in the General Plan. That process began our efforts towards completing a mid-cycle update of our General Plan that was last updated in 2002. While the State did not mandate this update for another few years, the Town took on this critical project early due to the many changes that have occurred since the last update. Indeed, the Town of Florence has grown and changed dramatically over the decades and much more dramatic changes are yet to come. Through the decades, Florence has retained an undisputable sense of place and character by respecting local history and being the seat, and the heart, of Pinal County. While the growth ahead will present many significant challenges, this General Plan update presents a valuable tool for the Town to use to protect its position in the emerging “megalopolis” or “Sun Corridor” region. This Plan respects the unique history and character of the area while also accepting that additional growth and development is inevitable. Smart growth is encouraged by this Plan and it is acknowledged that we must grow in a sustainable manner that respects our natural and cultural resources and brings new economic prosperity.

    Pinal County, Arizona ˜˜˜˜˜˜ Annual Budget 2003 - 2004 Preserving History 1891 Making History 2003 Pinal County Superior Court Buildings The original Pinal County Superior Court Building, now the McFarland State Park, was constructed in 1878. Besides its use as a courthouse, it was also a jail and later a hospital. The next courthouse was built in 1891 (pictured) using the Victorian-themed architecture of that period. This courthouse has the notoriety of being the oldest continually used government building in Arizona. Plans are currently underway to restore the building to its original configuration. The next courthouse was built in 1961. This court is currently being used for the Superior Court and Clerk of the Superior Court. The new Superior Court building (pictured) is scheduled to be completed in January of 2004. This new court will be 145,000 square feet, 4-story, with 10 courtrooms, Grand Jury room, Judicial Chambers and offices for the Clerk of the Court, Adult Probation and the County Attorney’s Criminal Division. The location of the new court is next to the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office and Detention Center. This location allows for inmates or persons awaiting trial to be escorted from the detention facility to the court through an enclosed walkway, thus saving time and money on transportation costs.
