It’s Here! The 2014 NWARC Holiday Party December 14!

Coming up this Sunday is the annual NW Alfa Romeo Club Holiday Party. This event is always a popular gathering of our friends and families to laugh about the past year and spin stories about what we’ll do next year. There’s plenty of Alfa Romeo goodies on the auction tables and we enjoy great foods and even talk a little bit about our cars and car issues and car nuts. This year we’ve moved the Holiday Party to a great location in Burien called Filiberto’s. This dedicated restaurant will be open- ing just for us and serves some of the best Italian food outside of … and perhaps better than most you’d find within Italy. There will be a very good No-Host bar to enjoy. The meal will be served family style Italian so you can choose what you prefer and you’ll probably be stuffed when finished. They will have gluten-free choices if requested. (Contact Bill Gehring at [email protected] by Friday morning if you want to re- quest gluten-free options.) All your fellow Alfisti will be there! In addition to the really good food, you’ll enjoy a fun presentation, festive atmosphere, Alfista of the Year will presented, and a chance to do some holiday shopping from the Auction tables.  Filiberto’s Italian Restaurant 653 SW 152nd Street Burien, WA 98166 (filibertositalianrestaurant.com) Plenty of parking!  Sunday, December 14th Starting at 5 PM, going until

Alfa News By Fred Russell

Yes, Virginia there really is a new Alfa Romeo in North America. The Alfa Ro- meo 4Cs have been arriving at the dealers around the USA and Canada for the last few weeks. My dealer friend in San Diego has been happy to sell a few and people on the street really approve when they see the cars. One of the key delays to this point was the transmissions overheating so to fix that, you’ll see the cars have a new, hastily added vent on the rocker panel of the driver side to pull in a little extra air and cooling. Alex Sargent tells me that he’s got a waiting list, but no cars quite yet. One did come into Alfa Romeo of Tacoma and was sold to Richard Griot! Anybody wander by Griot’s place to see if the car is displayed?

The LA Auto Show was a few days ago, but Alfa Romeo finally had a display in the USA! Shannon Low was there to see it, otherwise I might not have believed it was real. They had a couple of the 4C on display as well as nice Alfa décor and swag to catch people eyes. Nicely done Alfa Romeo!

I know I love this magazine for the tons of Alfa Romeo con- tent, but now Auto Italia is celebrating its 20th anniver- sary as the only worldwide publication dedicated to Italian cars and is offering some special deals to readers in the USA: A reduced 12 month subscription rate of just £70 (about $110 USD) instead of the regular £78. The offer, which will only run for a limited period is available via email to Phil Ward (Editor) for details. [email protected] They also have a cool 2015 wall calendar that is included with a subscription… or you can simply buy it while stocks for £8.95 including post- age. Pop an e-mail to the editor to order.

According to Au- toGespot, the Rome- based design studio, Lazzarini, is thinking of building a twin turbo Ferrari V8 version of the Alfa 4C with a the- oretical 738 HP. That should propel the car to 60 mph in 2.5 seconds thanks to 532 lb.-ft. of torque. They claim they can build one for about $312,000 USD.

There is a nice article about a 60th Anniversary Italian Road Rally experience by the NY Times contributor Nick Czap and well known Alfa fanatic, Conrad Stevenson. Read: www.nytimes.com/2014/12/07/automobiles/an-anniversary- pilgrimage-for-the-giulietta-timeless-at-60.html?emc=eta1&_r=1#

Lastly, in the latest Hemmings Sports & Exotics, they also have a nice article on NEW LOCATION page 53 about the Alfa Romeo Alfetta sedan. Fun piece that also talks about the 2600 West Commodore Way Alfetta GT and the later GTV6. “Some four door sedans can handle tight, fast Suite #3 curves extremely well… One particular standout sedan, which easily runs rings around many rarer and high priced sports cars, is Alfa Romeo’s lovely-looking Seattle, WA 98119 Alfetta sedan.” Nice. This motivates me to get mine out of the garage. 206 378 0900 www.group2inc.com

Long Straights and Hairpin Turns, Second Edition.

At the November club meeting, fellow club member Martin Rudow presented a mixed media presentation for his new book, Long Straights and Hairpin Turns, Second Edition. With 16 pages of new material added to the already popular book, Long Straights and Hairpin Turns, Second Edition is far from just a reprint. Martin Rudow, whose father raced in that great era has writ- ten both editions of Long Straights and Hairpin Turns with help from the few people remaining who were racing in those years. “The popularity of the book amazed me,” comments Rudow. “When copies began going for ridiculous prices, and I found more great material from the era, I knew that a second edi- tion was called for.” Starting with the first 4-cylinder races on abandoned airports in the early 1950s and wrapping up with three big-time pro- fessional racing circuits in place at the conclusion of the 1961 season, Long Straights and Hairpin Turns takes the reader through a wonderful decade where skinny-tired cars and their t-shirt-wearing drivers raced for lit- tle more than fun and trophies. The saga is continued with Long Straight’s successor, Weekends of Glory, which covers the increasingly big time racing era of the 1960s. Written with respect, passion, and amazing detail, Long Straights and Hairpin Turns is a one-of-a-kind record of a fabulous era sadly neglected until this book revived it for all race fans, young and old. It is available from Martin at (206) 427-1124, email [email protected], as well as at selected motorsports outlets and bookstores. Sold as a set with its companion volume, Weekends of Glory, a $139.90 value, for $100 total. Think… holiday gift for a spouse, from a spouse, for yourself.

Getting Schooled, Alfa Style by Fred Russell From out of the clouds that were sitting right on the pavement, came about a dozen chilled people. As they got closer, I could see these mystery people were the instructors and setup team making sure the cones were in place and matched their plans for the NWARC Driver Skills class that was about to start. The cars ranged from an older Buick to V8 infused 240Z, to newer Porsches and Corvettes. The students gathered under those same low clouds which offered no feeling of warmth. Soon their chills, and even the clouds would be gone and learning was underway. Professor Mirko talks to the class! Monroe Speedway, on the west side of Monroe at the Evergreen State Fair- grounds, served as the ven- ue for the classroom and track. Starting inside, there was donuts, fresh hot cof- fee, and people checking students in. Then when the time arrived, Mirko Freguia started the classroom por- tion. Walking through the days goals, priorities, and key fundamentals with the students. The presentation went over car control re-

garding braking, tires, traction, and even hand grip on the steering wheel. Mirko covered aspects people often don’t think about while driving, like how tires can only do a max of 100% of their capability before they loose traction and slide. They can slow you down at 100%, or turn you at 100% or a combination of say 75% braking and 25% turning… but when we push too hard on the

The answer is any- time that combination exceeds 100%, the tires slide and you loose control. Response time and thinking ahead become im- portant. Knowing the car and your own abilities be- comes important. Understanding weight shift of the car as you brake, or turn becomes important. Also talked about was what to do if the car does start to slide. This is important in the dry, wet, and ice which all of us face at times. The wrong time to learn how to handle an emergency situation is when you’re in the middle of an actual emergency. Mirko went over how to brake, steer into a slide, what oversteer and understeer is and how to react to it, and much more. Before anyone’s eyes glassed over, he had them heading out to their cars to try out some of the lessons on the track. They track setup enabled two starting points so mul- tiple exercises could safely happen simultaneously. One of the first exercises was the Emergency Brak- Mirko and Eric about to start another exercise ing. One at a time a student approached a started point, the starter coached them on what they were supposed to do. ”Accelerate straight down the track toward the set of cones at highway speed. Once you cross between the cones, brake as hard as you can to stop your car.” The braking zone tested their ability to main- tain control of the car, try to not skid, how quickly they responded, and how hard they pushed the brake pedal. Coaches stood at each event and gave feedback and suggestions immediately after your run. Students would end up repeating each exercise numerous times and it was fun to watch the improvement as people’s awareness grew. A slalom task through Toby steers into the spin as he leaves the wet track area. cones had a fun twist to it. There would be a flagger at the far end of the cones who would put up a flag and you’d be ex- pected to skip one slalom cone. This exercise helps to teach you to know the width and steering of your car, but also to drive using more of your peripheral vison. If you stare at the cones, you won’t see the flagger. Your car size knowledge and peripheral vi- sion can guide you through the cones… just like on a real road, you cannot focus only on the lane markings or you’ll miss the actions happening up ahead. As the day went along other exercise included a set of Crash avoidance, and rapid response!

NWARC December 2014 newsletter page 7

Schooling Cont’d... cones set up to create two possible routes. The student aimed straight at one of the openings but a flagger stand- ing by their path may drop a flag closing one of the options. The student might have their first choice, or might have to quickly switch to option two. The effect simulates a crash avoidance situation that can crop up suddenly. Since there was a real human standing in their vision, this turned out to be the most stressful event for the students. With another braking test, the cones were set up with a sharp turn midway through the zone. Often in an emergency we hit the brakes and try to swerve away from the incident, other car, person, or animal. The challenge being that hard braking and turning usually exceeds the 100% limit or tire adhesion…. The result is a skid with the car going straight. Hard to swerve away when you’re sliding straight ahead. The coaching would make sug- gestions and with practice, many people learned how hard to push on the pedal and still have steering control. One of the last efforts was a skid pad ar- ea where the instructors rode in the cars with the students. Driving around a me- andering course, students practiced push- ing their cars closer to the edge of trac- tion loss and steering control. With a lit- tle added water on part of the tight turn, they could quickly get sideways… the key is learning what to do next. Our natural reaction may be to let off the gas, or even hit the brakes. At that point the spin gets worse. Fighting those urges and instead turning into the spin, maintain steering control, is paramount. Staying on the gas pedal and letting off when you have the spin under control is the win. As the morning class ended, the students seemed very pleased with their new knowledge of their cars and talents, and many asked when the next school would be. The most important part was they drove away with skills that may save their life, the health and lives of everyone in their car, and may make the roads safer wherever they drive. As the volunteers and instructors enjoyed their hamburgers for lunch, the afternoon students started arriving to repeat the same fun classroom, driving, and learning that the morning enjoyed. Again, cars rushed by, tires smoked, cones got hit, and smiles were all around. The only big difference for the afternoon was the sun broke through and the temperatures moved up a wee bit. Thanks to Mirko Freguia and Chris Benny for getting the whole thing set up, to our sponsors who supported the event, and to all the volunteer instructors, registration people, setup, cleanup, and the Monroe Speedway. Each person did a great job and made this a great event for the students. Also, thanks to each student who can out, tried things they weren’t used too doing, and for taking the advice and trying each effort again, and again. Another wonderful NWARC driving school.

Walking into the Blackhawk Muse- um in Danville California, the first thing you see are the two Special cars; the 1955 Blue Ray, and the 1958 Blue Ray II. Both used to belong to our local, Jim Simpson who restored them and has had a long history with these cars. Originally built as one off show car specials by Enrico Nardi, who is better known for his upgrade items for Italian cars, and especially his stunningly beautiful steering wheels. Just past the Blue Rays, sits the three B.A.T. cars built by Bertone. Berlinetta Aerodinamica Technica, (B.A.T.) were created as design studies looking at aerodynamic de- signs combined with beauty. The first being the dark grey B.A.T. 5 which was built in 1953 on an Al- fa 1900 chassis. Then the next year, the silvery blue B.A.T 7 was built with big- ger, more dramatic wings and shape. The 3rd BAT 5 came along in 1955 as B.A.T. 9 and was a cleaner more modern look finished in pure silver. The last two were also built on the Alfa 1900 chassis. Seeing all three together is a treat so if you find yourself near San Fransisco anytime soon, make sure you take the 45 minute drive to Danville and wander slowly through the Blackhawk Museum.
