The Cambridge Union is a registered charity (no. 1136030) and our primary objective is the advancement of education through promoting debating, hosting educational events, providing debate training and opportunities for members of the society and members of the public to compete in competitions. We also provide debating workshops for schools and colleges to attend as well as enabling young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to participate in events.

These membership packages are vital for the future of the Union in order to continue our charitable work and maintain the price of Union membership so that it is accessible to everyone, whilst ensuring we can afford to host a variety of high profile and engaging speakers as well as continuing our debating competitions and *Terms and conditions apply community outreach. Cambridge Resident Membership

By applying for our new Cambridge Resident Membership (CB Membership) you are supporting the Charitable Objectives of the Society; namely to provide workshops for school children to introduce them to debating and enable students and young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to participate.

CB Membership will be capped at 50 at any time and will be exclusive to those residents in the CB postcode area. It is the first time in the 250+ year history of the Union’s history that we are opening membership to those not associated with the University.

Membership benefits are:

- One membership card;

- Free attendance for the card holder at all events and debates subject to the usual membership conditions*;

- Member prices in the bar;

- Attendance at members rates to paying events such as balls and garden parties. Guest tickets are subject to the same conditions as full membership;

- Room booking at members rates, subject to availability and the President’s (via Corporate Communications) approval.

This membership does not include the right to vote in elections, stand as an electoral candidate or hold any appointed position in the Cambridge Union Society.

Applicants must be resident in the CB postcode area and produce evidence of such at time of signing up.

The membership and benefits are valid for the named member only.

This agreement operates for one calendar year from the date of joining.

The cost of the annual subscription will be £250.

Patron of the Union

Individuals seeking to be Patrons of the Cambridge Union Society should contact the President and Head of Corporate Communications in writing.

Patrons of the Cambridge Union are entitled to the following benefits:

- Non membership;

- Attendance at any speaker or debate event during term time with priority access and reserved seating in the Chamber. Attendance to be agreed in advance with the President (via Corporate Communications) due to regulations surrounding building capacity;

- Free attendance with two guests at two black-tie debate dinners per term. This includes drinks pre- and post-dinner, three-course catered dinner, priority seating for the debate and the opportunity to meet and talk to the guest speakers. The date is to be agreed in advance with the President (via Corporate Communications) and is on a first-come basis.

- Member prices in the bar

- Free attendance for the Patron to paying events such as balls and garden parties to which a maximum of three guests paying guest rates may be invited.

- Room booking at member rates subject to availability and the President’s (via Corporate Communications) approval.

- Optional acknowledgement in each Term Card of the academic year for the duration of patronage.

Terms and Conditions

The memberships outlined in this document are bound by the following terms and conditions:

- Membership does not include the right to vote in elections, stand as an electoral candidate or hold any appointed position in the Cambridge Union Society;

- Unless otherwise stated, access to events is not guaranteed and cardholders are required to abide by all rules pertaining to ballots and queuing. Should an event be oversubscribed or where a ballot is being operated, cardholders shall be obliged to abide by the same procedures as full members;

- All memberships run for one calendar year from the date of joining and must be paid for in full at the time of joining. No refunds will be offered if membership is cancelled before the membership year is over;

- Unless otherwise stated in specific membership description, attendance at events does not need to be booked in advance. However, all requests for attendance where required, should be made in writing to the Head of Corporate Communications no less than 72 hours prior to the event taking place;

- Where dinners are included in the membership package it should be noted that there is a limited number of guests we are able to accommodate. Dinners must be booked on release of the embargoed term card with a minimum of two weeks notice for catering purposes;

- During redevelopment, dinners may not take plave at the Union. All details of location and timings will be notified in advance.

- Members prices in the bar are valid throughout the period of membership only and shall only be honoured on production of a valid membership card. For Corporate membership, the members prices shall only be valid on production of a business card if this corresponds to the sample card held on file at the Cambridge Union and only during the redevelopment period. Following redevelopment, the Corporate membership discount shall revert to being valid only on production on one of the four membership cards;

- Room booking discounts shall only be honoured once approved by the President (via Corporate Communications) and are subject to availability. Bookings can be made via the CUSEL Office;

- Applicants for the CB membership must produce evidence of being resident in the CB postcode area. This may be a council tax bill, utilities bill or bank statement;

- Applicants for any of these memberships should not be elligible for full Union membership ie. not be part of the Universiy as student, staff or Alumni of the University;

- The membership and benefits are valid for the named members only and are non transferrable. Any member found to be in breach of these terms and conditions shall have their membership revoked with immediate effect. No refund of membership shall be due;

- All members are subject to the governance of the Union and it’s code of conduct. Any member found to be in breach of these shall have their membership revoked with immediate effect. No refund of membership shall be due.

- CB memberships shall be capped at 50 per calendar year.

- Corporate memberships shall be capped at 20 per calendar year.
