THINGS CATHOLICS SHOULD KNOW ABOUT AND BISHOPS

The term as a title for the Bishop of Rome dates back to the 9th century. This means that though Simon Peter was 9am MASS MONDAY the first Bishop of Rome he would never have been Regina C. Yamaguchi Gladys Leon-Guerrero referred to as “The Pope”. The first Bishop of Rome to refer to himself as the pope was Pope St. Siricius in the 5th 9am MASS TUESDAY century. Maude Maynard Anne Stroud 5:30pm MASS WEDNESDAY In the Roman Catholic understanding of the nature of the †Pete Shockley Kika Finch church, the Bishop of Rome is regarded as the successor †Emerejilda Kanney of St. Peter, and all other bishops are regarded as successors of the apostles. The Second Vatican Council 9am MASS THURSDAY spoke of the “College of Bishops” who with and under the June Gleason Ann Grover pope share responsibility for the governance of the universal church. All bishops are selected from among priests to teach, sanctify, and govern/serve the members of the church spread throughout the world in various dioceses or local churches. 5pm MASS SATURDAY The First Vatican Council (1860) decided that the pope has Our Parish Family Fr. Jack immediate jurisdiction over the whole church, although in 9am MASS SUNDAY practice each bishop has day to day authority in their †Nicholas Shaw M/M Ralph Bivins respective dioceses. Vatican I also declared that the Pope may proclaim what the church believes infallibly—without 11:45am MASS SUNDAY error. This teaching did not mean that whatever the pope †Bob Gagnon Marian Bounds says is infallible or that he may never err. Most theologians agree that there are only two “infallible” teachings made by popes since the Vatican I teaching: The doctrine that Mary was conceived without sin; and the doctrine that at the end of her life Mary was assumed into heaven body and soul. There are some who contend that the declaration of Pope John Paul II that the church has no authority to ordain women to the priesthood is also infallible but this is widely disputed.

Canon Law calls upon all Catholics to give respect and assent to whatever the pope and the bishops teach about faith and morals in an authoritative way. This does not mean that faithful Catholics—whether lay or clergy—are unable to discuss and debate the nature of such teachings and the extent to which they are binding on church members.

Titles of address for popes, cardinals, and bishops such as Your Eminence, Your Grace, Your Excellency, or even Your Holiness are honorifics that have become customary but are not rooted either in sacred scripture or tradition.

Although most cardinals are bishops and archbishops, they enjoy the same ordinary authority as other bishops. However, unlike the others they have the high duty and responsibility of electing the new pope when one dies or resigns from office.

One of the highest responsibilities of bishops is their authority to ordain deacons, priests, and bishops for service to the people of God. In practice, the Pope appoints directly almost all the worlds bishops.
