EASTERN SHORE REAL ESTATE You have decided to buy or sell a home. This is one the biggest financial decisions you will make, and the most important thing you can do is to make sure you have a professional on your side through the transaction. That person is a REALTOR®. Why use a REALTOR®? Because he or she is not only a licensed real estate agent but also a member of the National Association of REALTORS® and abides by its strict Code of Ethics. 4 Reasons to work with a REALTOR® 1. Real estate is local. Every day, there are state and national statistics shared showing the state of real estate. But do these statistics reflect what is happening on the Eastern Shore? Working with a local REALTOR® is going to give you the most accurate, up-to-date information about real estate in Accomack and Northampton counties. Our real estate market is unique, and you need to work with an expert in Eastern Shore real estate. 2. Your local REALTOR® is a professional. Using a local REALTOR® gives you a professional who is working on your behalf. A real estate transaction is complex, and having a professional by your side can mean the difference in getting your transaction to the closing table. Buying or selling a home requires a professional who has the knowledge of our local market and the negotiating skills to get you the best results. 3. Education and experience. Local REALTORS® commit to continuing their professional development and ensuring that they are the up to date on the latest laws, regulations and trends that affect real estate. The REALTOR® Code of Ethics, which all members agree to follow, essentially says that REALTORS® will deal with all parties of a transaction honestly and put the client’s interest ahead of their own. 4. More than a sign in the yard. “But all a REALTOR® does is put a sign in the yard. I can do that!” While there may be a sign in your yard, that is just the beginning of what your REALTOR® will do for you. Taking you through all the many hurdles between you and the closing table and ensuring your best interests are represented is what your local expert will do for you.

Amy Higgins is the association executive for the Eastern Shore Association of REALTORS® and can be reached at 757-789- 7630 or [email protected]

Celebrating the Legacy of Miles Hancock The late Miles Hancock is an inspiration to many Eastern Shore carvers who, along with the rest of the world, are now able to visit his workshop at the Mu- seum of Chincoteague Island at 7125 Maddox Blvd. The workshop was dedicated last Friday not only to the memory of Hancock “but to all Chincoteague carvers past, present, and future.” In addition to mak- ing decoys, Hancock was a market and terrapin hunter and a hunting guide, who began working as a youth to help put food on the table. Above, at left, is his workroom. To the right, Carroll Lee Marshall, a carver from Saxis, came to celebrate the tradition. The sign on Hancock’s workshop below is a replica of one he painted to advertise his business.

Photo of Miles Hancock at left is one shown in the workshop.
