Link to the lesson You will learn to characterize the circumstances in which Poland regained its independence and the challenges it faced; to characterize the views represented by Józef Piłsudski and Roman Dmowski; to characterize political life in the Second Polish Republic; to characterize the most important politicians of the Second Polish Republic; to explain the problems of reborn Poland. Nagranie dostępne na portalu epodreczniki.pl Nagranie abstraktu The reborn Polish state suffered due to an internal crisis. It would barely overcome its economic difficulties. On top of the post‐war crisis, Poland was ravaged by the Partitions and the war itself. The Second Polish Republic was a multinational state inhabited by followers of multiple religions, contributing to the tensions. The Ukrainians demanded their own state, and antisemitism was on the rise. After Poland regained independence, Józef Piłsudski (since 1920, Marshal of Poland) became the temporary Chief of State. After the general elections, the sejm was fragmented – there were so many parties that it was difficult to form a government. Cabinets kept collapsing, one after another. After the end of the border wars, the first President of Poland, Gabriel Narutowicz, was elected. However, shortly afterwards, in 1922, he was assassinated. Piłsudski, dissatisfied with the situation in the country, rebelled against the legal authorities together with the parts of military loyal to him, and subsequently abolished them in the so‐called May Coup d’État in 1926. He ruled as a dictator, though formally he was merely the Commander‐in‐Chief of the military. The rule of Piłsudski and his followers are known as the “Sanation” (from the Latin word “sanatio”, meaning “healing”). Exercise 1 Recall the disputes between Józef Piłsudski and Roman Dmowski pertaining to Poland and her future. Match the views with the policians that expressed them. The voters should vote for the Naonal Democrats., The Poles should find common ground with the naons from the Polish-Russian borderlands., Poland’s main enemy is Germany., Poland should be inhabited mainly by Poles., Poland’s main enemy is Russia., The Polish cause should be, above all, fought for with armed force., The Polish Socialist Party is a good opon for the voters., It is beer to fight for the Polish cause through diplomacy. Józef Piłsudski Roman Dmowski Exercise 2 Match the presented regulaons introduced by the March Constuon with their effects. The Presidenal office was not very powerful. Józef Piłsudski refused to take part in the elecons, as he wished to be able to influence the state’s affairs. Nobody else enjoyed as much authority as him, which further weakened the office., The Sejm elecons did not have any mechanics that would prevent the entry of large numbers of pares. As a result, the Sejm was fragmented, and there were pares who had less than ten Members of the Parliament. In this situaon, it was hard for it to make decisions, as there were many differing views over every single maer., The rights of the cizens were oenmes used to cricize the authories (e.g.) in the press, undermining the state’s authority., With a fragmented Sejm, the government did not have an easy me maintaining support (since every now and then a party would withdraw it, making the government lose majority support). Governments would change very oen and could not implement coherent, long-term plans. The President was elected not by the general populaon, but by the Sejm and the Senate. He wielded lile authority; his principal role was to represent the state in internaonal affairs. The Prime Minister was appointed by the Sejm, in agreement with the President. The government was responsible before the Sejm. The cizens enjoyed many rights and liberes (e.g. the freedom of speech, print, gatherings, religion, etc.). General elecon law was introduced. The Sejm and the Senate would be appointed in general elecons (every cizen could vote); the elecons were also equal (meaning that every vote had equal value), direct (one had to vote personally), and anonymous. Exercise 3 Task 1 Read the interview with Piłsudski from 1930 and ponder what did the Marshal think about the Polish Sejm and its members. IX, Warszawa 1937, s. 218–224. Exercise 4 Read the various opinions on the changes introduced aer the May Coup d’État presented below. Assess their character. Match the opinions with the ways they were intended by the speakers. It is abhorrent to treat polical opponents in such a way., Finally, the quarrels in the Sejm have been curtailed., It is a good thing that the schools put so much emphasis on raising the children to serve the state. Owing to this, the young generaon will be a generaon of patriots. And, perhaps, will not repeat the errors of their elders., It is abhorrent to treat one’s polical opponents in such a way., Now, if they took beer care of the peasants as well..., Do we really need to sway from one extreme to another?, The new constuon gave the President more power. It was him, for example, who appointed the government., Many well-known policians decided to emigrate to different countries, such as Switzerland., Placing the opposion policians in isolaon camps with no court sentences needs to be acknowledged as a scandal, unworthy of the principles of democracy., This country is unlivable! It’s a prison! I’m leaving and coming back only when there are different people in power! Cricism Praise Expressing emoon Maer-of-fact descripon of the situaon Proposing new soluons Exercise 5 Match the keyword with the definion. The polical alliance in power between 1926-1939. It called for a moral renewal and the healing of public life; it was authoritarian in character., An illegal aempt, most commonly employing the use of military, to take over the authority in the state., A view claiming the superiority of one’s own naon above the others., In other words, the fundamental law – a state’s most important legal act., A right-wing polical movement born in the late nineteenth century. Its founder and leader was Roman Dmowski; it followed a naonalist ideology., The highest authority organ in the state; in Poland, it is made up of two Houses, the Sejm and the Senat. 2019 Special edition PISMO CODZIENNE Independence Day, November 11, 2019 FREE AGAIN! THEY FOUGHT FOR INDEPENDENT POLAND Dear Readers, The day of November 11 – the National Independence Day – is not accidentally associated with the Polish military uni- form, its symbolism and traditions. Polish soldiers on almost all World War I fronts “threw on the pyre their lives’ fate.” When the Polish occupiers were drown- ing in disasters and revolutions, white- and-red flags were fluttering on Polish streets to mark Poland’s independence. The Republic of Poland was back on the map of Europe, although this was only the beginning of the battle for its bor- ders. Józef Piłsudski in his first order to the united Polish Army shared his feeling of joy with his soldiers: “I’m taking com- mand of you, Soldiers, at the time when the heart of every Pole is beating stron- O God! How was this possible? What conditions existed that were able to bring together three separate and distinct areas together? This thesis will look into the development of Polish national identity in the three partitioned areas of Poland during the late 19th and early 20th centuries and in particular the role that imperial policy played in its formation. The purpose of this thesis is to carry out a comparative study of the three partitioned areas of Poland between roughly 1863 and the outbreak of World War I. Specifically, the thesis compares the effects of the three Imperial powers on the economic landscape of each region, as well as the environment in which Polish political thought, specifically different forms of Polish nationalism, emerged, analyzing how that environment help contribute to its development.

The August Novelization of 1926 became a temporary solution. One of the first decrees to be issued was the appointment of the General Armed Forces Inspector (Polish acronym: GISZ). Józef Piłsudski was appointed for this office by Ignacy Mościcki. In 1935, the April Constitution was adopted, limiting the authority of the Parliament. During the campaign for the new term of the Sejm in September 1930, the opposition leaders were arrested. Some of them were forced to emigrate. The Brest elections of November granted the Nonpartisan Bloc for Cooperation with the Government (BBWR) 56% of the seats in the Sejm and almost 68% in the Senate. It was a result of a violation of democratic principles. The founding of the Bereza Kartuska prison in the 30s became a symbol of the Sanation’s activities.

PRZEGLĄD ZACHODNI 2014, No. II MARCELI KOSMAN Poznań THE POLISH RES PUBLICA OF NATIONAL AND ETHNIC MINORITIES FROM THE PIASTS TO THE 20TH CENTURY Początki Polski [The Beginnings of Poland], a fundamental work by Henryk Łowmiański, is subtitled Z dziejów Słowian w I tysiącleciu n.e. [On the History of Slavs in the 1st Millennium A.D.]. Its sixth and final volume, divided into two parts, is also titled Poczatki Polski but subtitled Polityczne i społeczne procesy kształtowania się narodu do początku wieku XIV [Political and Social Processes of Nation Forma- tion till the Beginning of the 14th Century]1. The subtitle was changed because the last volume concerns the formation of the Piast state and emergence of the Polish nation. Originally, there were to be three volumes. The first volume starts as follows: The notion of the beginnings of Poland covers two issues: the genesis of the state and the genesis of the nation. The two issues are closely connected since a state is usually a product of a specific ethnic group and it is the state which, subsequently, has an impact on the transformation of its people into a higher organisational form, i.e. a nation.2 The final stage of those processes in Poland is relatively easily identifiable. It was at the turn of the 10th and 11th century when the name Poland was used for the first time to denote a country under the superior authority of the duke of Gniezno, and the country inhabitants, as attested in early historical sources.3 It is more difficult to determine the terminus a quo of the nation formation and the emergence of Po- land’s statehood.

This is an open access article distributed under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs license (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/3.0/) Identity and Diversity: What Shaped Polish Narratives Under Communism and Capitalism Witold Morawski1 at first, the motherland is close at your fingertips later it bleeds hurts – Tadeusz Różewicz (1999, p. 273) Aims I shall refer to concepts of identity and difference on the border between culture and society not only to better understand and explain waves of social anger experienced by individuals or communities but also to reflect on ways in which to address the challenges that emerge within the social environment. One is angry when struggling with financial insecurity due to unemployment or low income; economists analyse this phenomenon. Another one is angry because of the mediocrity of those in power; political scientists explore this matter. The media, whose task is to bring the above to public attention, also become instruments that shape events and they aspire or even engage in exercising power. Thus, I shift the focus to society and its culture as sources of anger and, at the same time, areas where we may appease anger (Mishra, 2017; Sloterdijk, 2011). People often tap into the power of identity and difference as a resource. I do not assume that culture prevails, but society needs to take it into account if it is to understand itself and change any distressing aspects of reality.

  • Background and Cases of Nationalization in Poland in the Stalinist Era – an Example of Lublin’S Tanning Industry
MISCELLANEA HISTORICO-IURIDICA TOM XVI, z. 1 ROK 2017 Karol Dąbrowski Maria Sklodowska-Curie University e-mail: [email protected] phone: +48 81 537 54 28 DOI: 10.15290/mhi.2017.16.01.11 Background and cases of nationalization in Poland in the Stalinist Era – an example of Lublin’s tanning industry SUMMARY Background and cases of nationalization in Poland in the Stalinist Era – an example of Lublin’s tanning industry The nationalization processes in People’s Poland had already begun at the time of estab- lishment of the Polish Committee of National Liberation. Enterprises were submitted under temporary state management and were expropriated on the basis of various regulations, including those enacted by Pilsudski’s sanation. The food industry was na- tionalized as part of the land reform. Industrial enterprises which were able to employ more than 50 employees on one shift (it was quite indefinite) were nationalized by the act on nationalization of 3 January 1946. Next, factories were taken over by political decisions of the communist Polish United Workers’ Party. On the other hand, the re- construction of industry after the Nazi and Soviet devastation, rescuing of work places, concern for inhabitants’ lives, supplies of food and goods, needed extraordinary mea- sures. It is demonstrated by the example of the tanning industry in Lublin – where the Polish Committee of National Liberation had its headquarters. However, the national- ization in post-war Poland served the communists political interests and was one of the means used by the communist political class to introduce the totalitarian system.
