Overshadowed by the Incas in popular knowledge, the Chachapoya culture ruled over a large area of what is now the Amazonas region of northern Peru. The name Chachapoya was likely given to the group by their Inca conquerors, derived from a Quechua phrase meaning “cloud forest”. On the way you will see the large plains of rice in the province of Uctubamba, you will also pass through the hottest city of the Amazon region Bagua Grande. (None) Day #2 Kuelap| Many consider it to be the second most impressive ruin complex in Peru, known as The Machu Picchu of the North In the morning you will explore the ancient fortress of the Chachapoyas known as Kuelap. a magnificent Pre-Inca fortress which many consider it to be the second most impressive ruin complex in Peru after Machu Picchu, with a parallel drawn between the stunning settings of the two archaeological sites. Moreover, it is the largest ancient stone structure in south America. Embraced by the dense forest of the Andean mountains, Kuelap fortress pays testament to a pre-Inca civilization lost to history. Climb aboard a cable car and enjoy spectacular views of the Utcubamba Valley as you ascend to Kuelap fortress’ vertiginous perch. From Kuelap tourist center, choose to take a 20-minute uphill hike or horseback ride (optional) to the archaeological site. Enter through a gap in the 65-foot (20-meter) walls and appreciate more than 400 dwelling and ceremonial buildings alongside history-rich commentary from your guide. After thorough exploration, return to Tingo Nuevo town for lunch and then relax during the transfer back to your hotel. (Breakfast, Lunch) Day #3 Gotca| Amongst the world’s loftiest waterfalls is in constant contention; have been ranked everywhere from 3rd to 15th Today you will enjoy a day trip to the Gocta Waterfalls, plunging from a height of 2,529 feet (771 meters), are some of the highest in the world. You’ll travel for approximately 1.5 hours to Cocachimba, where your 3-hour hiking tour through dramatic Amazon landscapes begins. Experience the spectacular jungle scenery which is abundant: see monkeys swinging between trees and, with luck, spot the native Peruvian bird known as the cock of the rock. On arrival at the Gocta Waterfalls fill the power of this natural wonder, while you have chance to plunge into the pools created by some of the world’s highest falls — note these pools are pretty cold. Following free time to relax at the waterfalls, you’ll return to Cocachimba and revitalize with lunch before returning to your hotel. (Breakfast, Lunch) Day #4 Karajia Sarcophagi & Quiocta Caverns| Guard the secrets and the legacy of the ancient Chachapoyas people Today you will enjoy an excursion to The Karajia Sarcophagi and Caverna de Quiocta, two of country’s most spectacular and overlooked attractions. Combine ancient history with adventure on this 10-hour excursion, which offers insight into pre-Inca culture. Marvel at the 600-year-old Karajia Sarcophagi, funeral tombs perched on the side of a limestone cliff. During the walk, your guide provides historical context for the funeral tombs, created to house the corpses of wise men in pre-Inca culture. Capture photographs of the impressive anthropomorphic statues, some of which measure 8 feet (2.5 meters), before revitalizing with lunch in the city of Luya. Proceed to your next stop, the magnificent Caverna de Quiocta, studded with stalactites, stalagmites, and rock formations of outstanding natural beauty. Explore the caverns by flashlight, admiring bizarre limestone formations, before returning to daylight and concluding your tour with your drive back to your hotel. (Breakfast, Lunch) Day #5 Revash Mausoleums & Leymebamba | Cream- colored mausoleums to house important members of the society Calling all history enthusiasts, today you will head to Revash, known as the ‘Village of the Dead’ because of its 14th-century mausoleums. Discover these mausoleums, which are high valuable constructions of funeral homes. Travel to the funerary complex on horseback and from a distance of approximately 328 feet (100 meters), you’ll observe the 14th-century mausoleums and listen to commentary regarding their construction from your guide. Observe the funeral homes, characterized by their colored roofs and cross-shaped windows. Note the surrounding cave paintings and the gabled roofs of the structures, and marvel at their seemingly precarious position on the side of a limestone cliff. Then, immerse into the Chachapoyas history at the Leymebamba Museum, which replicates local architectural traditions and plays host to a 240-strong collection of mummies excavated from the nearby Lagoon of the Condors. In the garden, more than 100 species of orchid bloom prettily. After lunch at the museum, your tour concludes with drop-off at your hotel. (Breakfast and Lunch).
