School to Experience

OBJECTIVE The to Career experience is intended to provide Hempfield High School students with opportunities to develop requisite skills needed for the transition from high school to the world of work.

Criteria: • Open to juniors and seniors • The student is responsible securing a paid position with a local business. • Students will be employed in the afternoon hours prior to the end of the school day (must be a minimum of 5 hours per week) • Students applying for School to Career must demonstrate: -a positive attendance record -have a good disciplinary record (no out of school suspensions during the time the student is enrolled in the course) -have a passing grade point average • Students must be on track for graduation based on credits earned • Work experiences must be approved by Parents/Guardians Employer School Counselor • A work experience grade of A-F will be awarded based on attendance and an employer .

Transportation Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from the site on a daily basis.

Liability The student and his/her parent/guardian assume liability during travel to and from the work site. Students must have personal insurance coverage.

Site ’s Role The site supervisor serves in a “teaching capacity” in permitting the student to participate in, observe, and assist in a variety of work place activities. model and explain the necessary skills required to earn a living in their career field. The supervisor is responsible for verifying dates and hours served by the student on a monthly basis. The site supervisor is also responsible for filling out an evaluation at the end of the semester, which will be incorporated into the student grade.

Activity The specific activities in which a student may participate will be determined by the participating business or organization in cooperation with the student, parents, and school. No student may participate in activities that would be considered unusually dangerous or inappropriate for his/her age level.

Required Documentation/Assignments During the work experience students should demonstrate proper workplace behaviors, maintain accurate attendance records, and notify their school counselor if a change in job placement occurs. The student is responsible for maintaining a journal of participation. The journal is to be turned in at the completion of the semester. Students must turn in five typed journal entries (at least one page each in length). Each journal entry must relate to the topics below:

September/February: Types of activities you participated in and the purpose of those activities within the job setting.

October/March: Job specific to your position. Examples of things you needed to learn and continue to learn to do for your job.

November/April: Skills, abilities, and characteristics you have needed to utilize to perform your job well. Please provide examples.

December/ May: What training or further is necessary to advance in your job right now?

January/June: What are some of the challenges you have faced at work and what are some things that your have learned about yourself through this experience.

Student Responsibility The student is required to sign in/out in the Franklin Counseling Office and at the work site each day. In addition, the student is responsible for obtaining the site supervisor’s verification and signature of their time at the work site. If the student cannot attend work for any reason, he/she is responsible for calling the supervisor and informing him/her of the absence. If a student is absent from school, they should also contact the employer and report the absence for that day. Termination A student may be terminated by the site supervisor, or school personnel for failure to adhere to the contract and course requirements. Termination will result in the student receiving a WF and no course credit will be awarded. Should a student fail to adhere to the course requirements, resulting in course failure, he/she may not continue in the program for the duration of the school year.
