Accepted: 10 May 2018 “ALWAYS BAYRAM, ALWAYS EASTER”: THE CALL FOR ALBANIAN CIVIC UNITY IN GJERGJ FISHTA’S THE HIGHLAND LUTE Abstract Gjergj Fishta’s verse narrative, Lahuta e Malcis (ca. 1907) is often regarded as the national epic of Albanians. The epic produces a fresh vision of the shared cultural identity of Albanians by telling the story of their struggle for independence blended with elements of regional and local culture which had never before entered into high literary language. The paper argues that Fishta creates a national epic not just by the events he narrates in the poem but also by the language and imagery he uses. The poem’s language puts Albanian modes of expression into high literature, depicts Muslim and Christian Albanian practices in a manner that emphasizes their common ground, and utilizes Albanian folklore such as the mythological creatures called zana and ora, which lie outside both the Christian and Muslim religions, but are closely associated with the land. In emphasizing the Albanian land, language, and culture, Fishta’s epic poem crafts a civic Albanian identity that embraces Albanian religious diversity and transcends sectarian identifications.

E-ISSN 2281-4612 Academic Journal of Interdisciplinary Studies Vol 2 No 3 ISSN 2281-3993 MCSER Publishing, Rome-Italy November 2013 The Critical Reception of Gjergj Fishta during 1944 - 1990 Dr. Lili Sula Faculty of History and Philology Departament of Literature, University of Tirana Doi:10.5901/ajis.2013.v2n3p99 Abstract Gjergj Fishta is one of the most important writers of Albanian literature. He holds a central place in the Albanian literary system. Until 1990s, his work was censured creating a typical reception model in our literature at the time; that is the critical ideological reception. The critical reception of Fishta’s work during (1944 – 1990) presents a typical phenomena of a malfunctioning of the scheme of communication and circulation of the artistic value. The literary and religious activity of Gjergj Fishta was anathematized. It was the totalitarian regime’s policy and practice to attack any deviation from the socialist realism platform and/or any religious activity and practice of various religions representatives. What generally characterizes the critical judgment of this period is a poor qualitative and quantitative judgment, the homogenization of the critical reception of the author’s work according to the ideological reception model and the axiomatic formulation of the conclusions without doing an analytical interpretation. The critical reception of Fishta’s work in this period presents one of the anathemized models of the reception of the author, a typical ideological reception model, which had quite a significant impact in the Albanian literary system. Gjergj Fishta is one of the most important writers of Albanian literature. He holds a central place in the Albanian literary system.

Kosovo Nora Sefa interviewed Rexhep Qosja Interview date: 15 January 2020 Sefa: We’re here today with Professor Rexhep Qosja at the Albanological Institute in Pristina. Professor Qosja, thank you for having me and for finding the time for this meeting. Qosja: Welcome to the Albanological Institute. It is an honour for me to be included in the European Archive of Voices. Sefa: I am Nora, and I’ll be your interviewer today. Let’s start with some questions, we have various topics to cover and the first, Professor, is to ask about your origins, your home, where you were born, your childhood. You were born in the village of Vuthaj in Montenegro, an Albanian enclave, which I believe still exists today. What was your childhood like, do you remember it well? Qosja: I was born in the village of Vuthaj. According to Eqrem Çabej [Albanian linguist, 1908-1980], the name of this village is derived from the Albanian words vu or vëne, the location where they were “placed,” meaning where some people who came from Kelmend were placed, and where they “settled.” The village is on the border with Albania. Actually, it is a village that belongs to the Valley of Plav and Guci [or Plav-Gusinje Valley]. This valley has two small towns which played a historic role at the time of the League of Prizren, a unique historic role at that time. During the time of the League of Prizren, which gathered in the town of Prizren, in Kosovo, the Valley of Plav and Guci had their own representative in the League.

PhD AAB College, Pristina, Kosovo Abstract Gjergj Fishta is one of the most extensively analyzed writers of Albanian literature. Although he was disowned during the communist period in Albania, his undeniable literary values brought about a restored interest into his work by many scholars. For a long time, during the communist censorship up. until 2014, many discussions and writings occurred regarding the ban of some writers during the period 1912 to 1939, including Fishta. Such a conclusion emerges due to the fact that various critical and literary works into the history of literature, as well as post-war anthologies, whether individual or group writings, failed to afford Fishta with his due place. Furthermore, following the democratization of Albania, the prohibition of Fishta’s writings over the course of half a century has been the subject of many writings. Therefore, this paper will analyze Fishta in communist times, his inclusion in histories of Albanian literature after 1968, which coincided with the year when the manuscript "The History of Albanian Literature 1912 - 1939” was prohibited.

  • Translating Gjergj Fishta's Epic Masterpiece, Lahuta E Malcis, Into English As the Highland Lute
TranscUlturAl, vol.1, 2(2009), 140-145 140 http://ejournals.library.ualberta.ca/index.php/TC Translating Gjergj Fishta's epic masterpiece, Lahuta e Malcis, into English as The Highland Lute Janice Mathie-Heck, Translator, Poet, and Literary Critic Both Robert Elsie and I are delighted that our translation of Gjergj Fishta's Lahuta e Malcis (the Albanian national epic) has emerged into the light of day, and that it will receive exposure to a worldwide readership. We worked hard on it, line by line, and are pleased with how The Highland Lute sounds in English. The epic poem contains 15,613 lines. It mirrors Albania’s difficult struggle for freedom and independence which was finally achieved in 1912. It was important for us to achieve an atmosphere similar to that of other important European epics such as Beowulf (England), The Kalevala (Finland), and the grand medieval poems of the eleventh and twelfth centuries such as The Song of Roland (France), Nibelungenlied (Germany), and Poem of the Cid (Spain). Rhythmically, The Highland Lute is very much like the American writer Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's epic poem, Hiawatha, parts of which I loved to recite as a young girl. Of course, Fishta wrote in the old Gheg language of northern Albania which was his natural and native tongue. He was strongly influenced by both the traditional oral epics of his own culture and by the Greek epics such as the Iliad, the Odyssey, and the Latin Aeneid. He also admired the Montenegrin national epic, The Mountain Wreath, by Njegosh (1847). I believe that he was consciously preserving the historical and linguistic dimension of the era in which events described in The Highland Lute took place -- that is, in the latter part of the 19th century and the first part of the 20th -- from 1862 to 1913.

  • New Research on Albanian Epic Songs
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by AIR Universita degli studi di Milano From the Archive to the Field: New Research on Albanian Epic Songs Zymer U. Neziri and Nicola Scaldaferri [1] This essay aims primarily to point out some new directions in research on Albanian epic song. Starting from archival materials and the issues they raise for further investigation in the field, it will focus in particular on certain structural elements of the songs related to their performance. The Albanian-language archival materials of the Milman Parry Collection of Oral Literature (henceforth MPCOL), collected in the 1930s by Milman Parry and Albert Lord, provide significant insight into the tradition. The first section offers an overview of the major collections and scholarly research on Albanian epics through the twentieth century, a rich body of work that includes local fieldwork-based studies as well as important foreign contributions, and that documents the geographical scope and contents of the Albanian epic tradition, which constitutes an important part of the oral heritage still alive in Europe today. The second section focuses more narrowly on the materials collected by Milman Parry and Albert Lord in the 1930s, exploring the ways in which those songs as well as the singers’ biographies—which have often been neglected in discussion of the MPCOL—still hold valuable insights for the study of oral poetry more broadly. In particular, this essay explores the implications of the collection process itself, as embedded in recordings and texts from the MPCOL. Finally, the third section summarizes some recent research conducted by the authors focusing on the singer Isa Elezi-Lekëgjekaj, one of the most important living practitioners of this epic tradition.
