CEU eTD Collection DOI: 10.14754/CEU.2017.02 iii ABSTRACT In this dissertation I intend to investigate the history and theory of national literary epic poetry in Europe, paying particular attention to its development among Albanians, Croats, Montenegrins, and Serbs. The first chapters will be devoted to the elaboration of a proper theoretical background and historical framing to the concept of national epic poetry and its role in the cultivation of national thought in Europe. The second part will flesh out national epos among Albanians and South Slavs by the means of a comparative analysis of some epics belonging to these literary cultures. In order to carry a comparison methodologically as solid as possible, I will investigate how the authors of epos have dealt with three key elements which I regard as crucial in the context of cultural nationalism: The study of these three elements, i.e. kinship, religion, and patriotism, constitute what I would like to call the “Tripod model”. Whereas the importance of folk traditions in European cultural nationalism has been the focus of many valuable studies, the elaboration and communication of national/nationalistic ideas by the means of literary epics has met with relatively little attention from the scholarly world, despite the relevance some of these epics had (and still have) in many East European countries. By investigating the theory and history of national epic poetry, this project aims at filling this gap by providing an original contribution to the study of cultural nationalism in Europe.     Rocznik Komparatystyczny – Comparative Yearbook – Komparatistisches Jahrbuch 7 (2016) DOI: 10.18276/rk.2016.7-16 Ursula Phillips UCL School of Slavonic and East European Studies (SSEES) With Open Eyes: The Young Narcyza Żmichowska’s Reception of Western Cultural Influences Narcyza Żmichowska (1819–1876) is not a name instantly recognizable outside Poland. In the English-speaking world, however, she is not unknown thanks to research on women’s history, where she is usually discussed in connection with the group of women with whom she was associated in the 1840s known as the Enthu- siasts (Fraisse and Perrot, 1993: 485). It is thanks to the appearance of Grażyna Borkowska’s book in English (2001) that her achievements as a literary author have become better known among Slavists and women’s literature researchers outside Poland. An English translation of Żmichowska’s best known novel Poganka (The Heathen) appeared in 2012 with a substantial introduction placing the work in both its Polish and European contemporary contexts (Żmichowska, 2012). Recently, this novel has featured alongside works by Charlotte Brontë, Daphne du Maurier and others, in a PhD dissertation inspired by psychoanalytic theories of femininity and mirroring, thereby proving her potential for comparative analysis (Naszkowska, 2012). The aim of the current article is to discuss this non-Polish context, and how foreign inspirations made their way into Żmichowska’s work and thinking. Like many other Polish cultural figures, Żmichowska maintained a close con- nection with France, although she never became an émigrée. Her literary activity is a testament nonetheless to how, despite spending more or less her whole life in the partitioned Polish lands, mostly in the Russian partition but also in the 1840s in the Poznań region of the Prussian, she was able to keep abreast of philosophical, political and literary developments in France and Germany and, in the latter part of her life, in Britain, North America, Italy and Scandinavia.

    Open Linguistics 2017; 3: 145–156 Research Article Open Access Klara Bilić Meštrić*, Lucija Šimičić Language Orientations and the Sustainability of Arbanasi Language in Croatia – A Case of Linguistic Injustice1 DOI 10.1515/opli-2017-0008 Received October 22, 2016; accepted March 1, 2017 Abstract: Despite numerous positive aspects of the global development of language-as-right orientation, we argue that its application is rooted in methodological nationalism, i.e. the idea of society being equal to a nation- state (Chernilo 2006), and the monoglot ideology based on the idea of one proper version of a historically and politically privileged dialect carrying the status of a language. This dominant preconception of social phenomena thus leaves many varieties in a legislative vacuum. As a consequence, language rights, often in the form of more or less mandatory legal instruments, concern only a (politically established) few. When this institutional inadequacy is paired with the existing orders of indexicality, then these varieties face marginalisation processes that render language use even more unsustainable. To address the issue of language sustainability, we analyse the language-as-right, language-as-resource and language-as-problem orientations in Croatia on the case of the Arbanasi, a community of descendants of Catholic albanophones who settled in the periphery of Zadar in the 18th century and whose group identity is marked by significant language loss. We analyse how speakers and community members themselves perceive marginalisation processes, especially concerning linguistic (in)justice that stems from the policies that hinder sustainability of Arbanasi language use in the long run.     The War in Bosnia and Herzegovina Or the Unacceptable Lightness of “Historicism” Davor Marijan War Museum, Zagreb, Republic of Croatia Abstract The author in this study does not intend to provide a comprehensive account of the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, in part because the cur- rent level of research does not enable this. The only way to understand this conflict is through facts, not prejudices. However, such prejudices are particularly acute amongst Muslim-Bosniac authors. They base their claims on the notion that Serbs and Croats are the destroyers of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and that both are equally culpable in its destruction. Relying on mainly unpublished and uncited documents from the three constitutive nations of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the author factually chal- lenges basic and generally accepted claims. The author offers alternative responses to certain claims and draws attention to the complexity of the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which has been mainly viewed in terms of black or white. The author does, however, suggest that in considering the character of the war it is necessary to examine first the war in Croatia and the inter-relationship between the two. The main focus is on 1992 and the Muslim and Croat differences that developed into open conflict at the beginning of 1993. The role of the international community in the war and the partition of Bosnia and Herzegovina are also discussed. At the end of the 20th century in Europe and the eclipse of Communism from the world political scene, it is not easy to trace the indelible marks left behind after the collapse of Yugoslavia and the wars that ensued.

From Indifference to Entrapment deals with the question of how the Netherlands faced up to this challenge during the years 1990-1995. It was during this period that the crisis erupted into armed conflict and the single worst war crime in Europe since the end of World War II took place in the ‘safe area’ of Srebrenica.     BANK OF ALBANIA 1 OUR NATIONAL CURRENCY IN BRIEF The history of our national currency starts concurrently with the creation of the National Bank of Albania, established on 2 September 1925. The Bank was created upon the signing of the convention between an Italian financial group led by Mario Alberti and the government of Ahmet Zogu. The convention defined that the bank, apart from lending, had the exclusive right to issue legal tender banknotes, gold and other metal coins for payments in Albania. This may be called the first currency issuing national institution, but our history shows that the coins had first been struck since IV century B.C., in the Illyrian cities of Dyrrachium (Durrës) and Apollonia (Pojan near Fier). Albania had a central bank for the first time in 1913, following the agreement of the Government of Ismail Qemali with Karol Pitner and Oskar Pollak, representatives of the Austro-Hungarian banking group Weiner Bank Verein, as well as with Pietro Fenolio and Guido Ansbaher, representatives of the Italian banking group Banca Commerciale Italiana. This institution was short lived, due to the political instability of the time and the beginning of World War I. When the bank was created in 1925, many currencies from different countries were circulating in Albania, thus the National Bank of Albania undertook measures to substitute them with a single Albanian currency. The golden frang, with its subunits (lek and cents, where 1 frang was equal to 5 lek and 100 cent) and its multiples 5, 20 and 100 golden frang was chosen as the currency of Albania.

    Readings - a journal for scholars and readers Volume 1 (2015), Issue 2 Adam Mickiewicz’s “Crimean Sonnets” – a clash of two cultures and a poetic journey into the Romantic self Olga Lenczewska, University of Oxford The paper analyses Adam Mickiewicz’s poetic cycle ‘Crimean Sonnets’ (1826) as one of the most prominent examples of early Romanticism in Poland, setting it across the background of Poland’s troubled history and Mickiewicz’s exile to Russia. I argue that the context in which Mickiewicz created the cycle as well as the final product itself influenced the way in which Polish Romanticism developed and matured. The sonnets show an internal evolution of the subject who learns of his Romantic nature and his artistic vocation through an exploration of a foreign land, therefore accompanying his physical journey with a spiritual one that gradually becomes the main theme of the ‘Crimean Sonnets’. In the first part of the paper I present the philosophy of the European Romanticism, situate it in the Polish historical context, and describe the formal structure of the Crimean cycle. In the second part of the paper I analyse five selected sonnets from the cycle in order to demonstrate the poetic journey of the subject-artist, centred around the epistemological difference between the Classical concept of ‘knowing’ and the Romantic act of ‘exploring’. Introduction The purpose of this essay is to present Adam Mickiewicz's “Crimean Sonnets” cycle – a piece very representative of early Polish Romanticism – in the light of the social and historical events that were crucial for the rise of Romantic literature in Poland, with Mickiewicz as a prize example.

    VESNA CVJETKOVIĆ-KURELEC »Virginija« Dimitrije Demetera (jezičnop ovijesni osvrt) 1 Život i rad Dimitrije Demetera (1811-1872) u hrvatskoj su književnoj i kazališnoj historiografiji višestruko istraživani. Svoju punu znanstvenu valorizaciju dobilo je sveukupno književno stvaralaštvo na hrvatskome jeziku. Pritom su utvrđeni dosadašnji stavovi o njegovu opusu, ali i revidirane ocjene o njegovim dramskim ostvarenjima. Mislimo prvenstveno na rasprave Nikole Batuši• ća, Branka Hećimovića i Darka Suvina, koje su nametnule novu interpretaciju Deme· terovih drama, pogotovu tragedije »Teuta«, pobijajući ocjene iz prošloga stoljeća i iz razdoblja modeme, QO kojima ta drama predstavlja vrhunac onovremene hrvatske dramske književnosti. 2 ))Spominjan uvijek s razlogom i pravom kao utemeljitelj suvre­ menog hrvatskog glumišta, on mu kao baštinu nije ostavio svoje dramsko djelo za koje su i on intimno a i mnogobrojni kritičari nakon njega smatrali da stoji u samu vrhu naše tragedije«, naglašava Nikola Batušić. 3 Osnovne primjedbe na piščevo ne· poznavanje dramaturških pravila i na neprimjerenost scenskoga jezika upućene su i na ostala dramska ostvarenja Dimitrije Demetera (dvije knjige )>Dramatičnih pokuše• nija«), dok su predlošci za opere »Porin« i ))Ljubav i zloba« uglavnom zahvaljujući glazbi uspjeli sačuvati dio svoga dramskoga naboja. Međutim, književna je historia· grafija ep »Grobnička polje« izdvojila kao ostvarenje po kojem Demeter s pravom ulazi u glavne predstavnike hrvatske književnosti devetnaestoga stoljeća. 4 Ako uz ovo djelo dodamo već istaknuto mjesto u osnivanju, razvoju i organizaciji kazališnog života u Zagrebu i ključnu ulogu koju je odigrao u pokretu ilirizma, tada je cjeloku­ pan udio ovoga Grka u hrvatskoj kulturi nesumnjivo velik. Zato i s pravom smatramo da svaki prilog koji može pridonijeti nešto novo u opisu njegova lika i stvaralaštva za­ služuje pozornost, to više ako se odnosi na gotovo neistraženu stranu Demeterova djelovanja.
