FA Vase Winners: 2002, 2009, 2010, 2011 WHITLEY BAY FC BW3 Welcome to Hillheads WHITLEY BAY v SOUTH PARK FA CARLSBERG VASE 4TH ROUND Saturday 21st January 2012

Good afternoon and welcome to Hillheads Park for today’s eagerly anticipated FA Carlsberg Vase 4th Round tie against South Park. I would like to extend a very warm welcome to all players, officials and supporters of South Park who have made the long journey north from Surrey. I hope they enjoy their weekend in the north east and have a safe journey back home tomorrow. Based in Reigate, South Park are members of the Cherry Red Records Combined Counties League. They won promotion to the Premier Division last season and are the current holders of the Surrey Premier Cup. Our only previous meeting with a club from their league came two years ago when we needed a replay to overcome a very good Chertsey Town side in the 5th Round of the competition. I would like to welcome to today’s game our match sponsors Molson Coors and their guests. Paul Caulfield, Simon Pollock and their friends. We are very grateful for your support. It also gives me great pleasure to welcome Shaun, Mark and the rest of team at Potts Print UK, our programme producers and printers. The club recently received an award for the best programme in the Northern League from Soccer club swap Shop. The great success of the club programme is due to Julian and everyone at Potts. Well done and thank you, for all, the hard work that goes into making the programme such a success. It is greatly appreciated by everyone at the football club. Last Saturday’s hard fought win over Consett took us top of the table and extended our unbeaten run to 10 games. We know that we are in for another tough game today but Ian will have the team well prepared as we seek to continue our remarkable run of success in the FA Vase. Please remember that should the scores be level after 90 minutes, extra time will be played and if there is still no winner, the replay will take place at South Park’s King George’s Field next Saturday. However, if the game is decided today, we will be at home again next Saturday when Penrith will be the visitors with Northern League points at stake. Paul McIlduff Chairman HOWAY THE BAY! BW4 MATCH REPORTS WHITLEY BAY 1 CONSETT 0 Saturday 14th January A hard fought victory in difficult conditions took Whitley to the top of the league as their championship rivals were all victims of frozen pitches. A healthy sized crowd of over 500 fans saw Whitley claim the points thanks to a rare Paul Robinson header in the second half. The fact that the game went ahead was due largely to the efforts of groundsman Dave Styles who produced a playing surface that Michael McMullen in midfield passed a mid morning inspection and apart from a narrow strip was prompting from midfield with accurate passes and was alongside the new stand, was frost free at kick off. looking much more effective than in recent games. It was Kerr who Consett, despite their lowly position in the table, came into the began the move that led to the crucial goal, with a pinpoint game boosted by their surprise Durham Challenge Cup victory at accurate pass through to Robinson who played the ball to Dale West Auckland in midweek. They started in much more confident who in turn found McMullen on the right wing. The youngster fashion that when the sides met at Belle Vue Park in September, whipped a perfect cross to the back post where Robinson came in enjoying more of the possession and trying to test Whitley’s reserve to head across Jameson into the net, a finish reminiscent of his team keeper Michael Hammond, who was deputising for the stoppage time winner against Barwell that sent Whitley to injured Kyle Hayes. Despite good approach work, their finishing Wembley two seasons ago. was wayward and Hammond was rarely put under any pressure. With half an hour still to play, Bay fans were hoping for more goals Whitley’s first attempt of note came after 11 minutes when Paul to cement victory but it was not to be. RESERVES BW5 With the Reserves Whitley Bay Football Club We returned to action after a month’s break on Saturday 7th January with a fine 2-1 victory against Killingworth Sporting which saw us progress to our second semi final of the season. would like to offer a very I’m not sure we are very popular with Killingworth having beaten them three times by the odd goal this season. The cup match was like the other two league encounters with both sides going for it from the warm welcome to our off. Gareth Williams made his first appearance for the Reserves as he was returning from a month out with injury. He nearly opened the scoring after 5 minutes with a curling free kick that hit the underside special guests for of the bar and despite claims it crossed the line the referee waived play on. It seemed a typical post Christmas match as passes from both sides were going astray and no-one could get any rhythm going. today’s game. However, a long clearance found Ian Lee who despite looking suspiciously offside ran through to slot low past the keeper to take us in at half time with a 1-0 lead. The second half provided a dogged display from us as players were cramping up and although Killingworth were reduced to ten men following a red card, they equalised following a free kick that was saved by Michael Hammond but the rebound was fired home by Paul Dunn. We began to press as the game wore on and a free kick by Williams was headed towards goal by Mark Davison and when it was saved he followed up to tap home for what proved to be the winner. We would like to thank Wednesday of last week saw us host Seaton Delaval at the third attempt following the high winds that caused previous postponements. Despite another strong wind the two teams managed today’s match sponsors to conjure up an entertaining match and in the end we gained 3 points against a very good Delaval side. We fielded a strong team that Molson Coors; Paul included two returning first teamers and also Gareth Williams made his second appearance in 4 days. We scored from an early freekick by Kyle Downey and we were looking good but Delaval always Caulfield, Simon Pollock threatened on the break and after hitting a post they scored right on half time with a specu lative long shot that dipped into our goal. In and their friends for their the second half with the wind at our backs I felt we weren’t keeping possession enough in the forward areas to sustain a spell of pressure so I got ready to make a double substitution. Whilst the subs were generous support and we waiting to come on Gareth Williams struck a free kick that was spilled by the keeper and Gary Ormston was on hand to head home the hope they enjoy their day rebound to give us a 2-1 lead. Despite this I still brought on Gav Hattrick and Niall Younger who gave us the spark and sharpness we were lacking. We were looking likely to get a third but Delaval caught with us. us on the break when a left wing cross wasn’t cleared and the impressive Dan McGuire scrambled in from 3 yards. It was never a We are also grateful to case of settling for a draw and a 40 yard diagonal pass from Williams was controlled by Jack W alker who at the second attempt delivered a fabulous cross for sub Niall Younger to head a brilliant winner with Potts Print (UK) Ltd for just 7 minutes remaining. Finally, I decided to let back up keeper Rob Joice transfer to their continued support Shankhouse. He was unfortunate with injuries and it didn’t really work out but we wish him well. I have been delighted with a couple of the lads getting call ups to the first team with Michael McMullen and are pleased to getting a great run in the side along with Michael Hammond and Alex Redfern making appearances. It’s great that Ian Chandler can rely on welcome them to us to support the First team effectively. Enjoy the game, today’s game. BW12 A brief history of Whitley Bay Football Club

1970’s The early 1970’s saw Bay’s successes continue with the League Cup being won in 1970/71, and the County Cup in 1970/71 and 1972/73. With the demise of amateur football the Club’s fortunes took a nosedive, culminating in them havin g to apply for re-election to the League in 1979/80. 1980’s In 1987/88, with fortunes rising, the club joined the Northern Premier League. In 1989/90 the Bay had their best ever run in the FA Cup, when they reached the 3rd Round, going down 1-0 at Rochdale, after a 1-0 win at then League side Scarborough, and in the 2nd Round defeating former winners Preston North End 2-0 in front of the BBC Match of the Day cameras. 1990’s The following season Whitley won not only the First Division Cup for the second time but also the Championship and promotion to the Premier Division. They finished in 11th spot in the 1993/94 season, their best position in the Premier Division. A decline in fortunes followed during the later 90’s and in 2000 Whitley were relegated back to the Northern League. 2000’s A new century marked the beginning of the most successful period in the club’s history as they rose to national prominence with record breaking achievements in the FA Vase.
