Although the ‘move’ had been initially mooted in 1993, by the end of 2001 the Club was no nearer to achieving that objective and at the end of the 2001- 02 season the Club finally left its spiritual home, and ground shares at , Spennymoor and West Auckland followed.

he Club continued to pursue its objective of getting to Tindale T Crescent and obtained the maximum Football Foundation grant of £250,000 in 2004. In conjunction with national blue chip developer Terrace Hill the Club finally obtained planning permission for the new ground in November 2008. The new ground named Heritage Park was built for the Club by Terrace Hill and was an integral part of a massive regeneration project.

Good afternoon and a warm and hospitable welcome is extended to all involved with North Shields to the newly named ‘Voneus Stadium’ for this Northern League Division One fixture.

Well, wasn’t it refreshing to come away from Heritage Park on the back of a win on Wednesday night?! It may have ‘only’ been a workmanlike 3-1 win against a side plying their trade in the Wearside League, but the position we find ourselves in means any positive needs to be grasped and built upon. Hopefully the players and supporters have more to shout about this afternoon against a very handy North Shields side who are genuine top 3 candidates.

Andy Toman and Ian McGuckin have certainly kept myself busy ahead of todays game keeping track of the new additions and outgoing players - check out the updated player profiles and also take note of recent fixture changes in the coming weeks.

In today’s edition of ‘the good, the bad and the ugly’ to commemorate 10 years here at Heritage Park I have focused on some of the worst periods/games that strand out from our time to date at this ground (more to choose from than I would of liked!!) Over the coming weeks I hope to get some of our supporters memories and reflections from the last 10 years so keep an eye out for this….

I am always looking for ways to keep the content of the matchday programme fresh and innovative so if any supporters have any ideas or feel they can contribute please come and speak to me or e-mail me at [email protected]

Enjoy the game, be sensible and keep everyone safe!

Gav FROM THE CHAIR…

It has been another busy week at Heritage Park with the good news of a new main sponsor announced, but the sad news that Chris Burns has had to put on hold his plans for the new ‘Bishop Auckland Brewery’ company.

I am however glad to say Chris will still be helping us out with the drinks and staff provision here at the club on matchdays and we are very grateful for that.

Our new sponsor “Voneus” is a 10-year-old rural broadband company (more details of which can be found later) growing in size all the time and a very exciting new partnership. They are new to the area and the stadium is now known as the “Voneus Stadium” here at Heritage Park.

It was great to have only our second home win of the season on Wednesday and Andy and Ian are bringing in new faces all the time and training hard to improve the team’s fitness and shape. The new players are very keen to impress which is exactly what we want.

I unfortunately am having to self-isolate for another week with one of my daughters testing positive for Covid - thankfully she is ok. I therefore missed Wednesday evening’s win although I did manage to watch it on the cameras installed within the ground.

Hopefully we will have a settled squad in the next 2/3 weeks and begin to gel together better…Best of luck this afternoon and on Wednesday when we welcome Billingham Town!

Finally, I would just like to give a massive THANK YOU to all of my fellow directors and all of the volunteers at the club for their hard work and extra efforts during these very challenging and trying times.

FROM THE MANAGER…

Good afternoon and welcome to the ‘Voneus Stadium’ for today’s game v North Shields.

I'd just like to say that when I returned from Norway I did so because I wasn't being challenged and was in a comfortable position...Life/work was easy and I have always wanted to challenge myself. If you look at my past I have never wavered from a challenge. I left Utd in the football league to go to who had just been relegated to the Conference because I wanted a challenge - we succeeded at the first attempt.

I came here to challenge myself with only 1 point on the board and I was lucky in the fact that my assistant ‘Gucky’ believes in our abilities to succeed and came with me. I looked beyond the surface of the club and saw genuine people, all volunteers who we could work with. I saw a few players who had the desire and work ethic to get us to where we want to be. The fans were supportive even though the current Covid guidelines have limited their support in numbers at games. The challenge is still immense, but I can see a glimmer of light. That glimmer will brighten each week until we succeed in what we want to do here. The games to date have not been easy, especially when you’re working with another managers players. I knew the situation when I joined, however I didn't expect it to take this long to get my own players on board. All I will say to the fans is thank you for the ongoing support, please continue to be patient. I know it's not good at the moment but we will get there and your support will help us to overcome this major challenge!

On to today’s game which I see as one of the toughest games this season. I have seen North Shields twice this season and I think they will be promoted as they are a very mobile and energetic team with individuals that can turn a game with a touch of class, so we need to keep our focus and try to stop the constant flow of attacks that will come. It's going to be difficult but we will give it our best shot.

I don't like to talk about injuries or illness as it looks like excuses, we will be playing our best available players in all games so let's hope that will be good enough.

Regards, Andy Toman MATCH REPORT: 21/10/20

DCC Preliminary Round – Bishop Auckland 3-1 Horden CW Bishop Auckland: Liversedge, Marshall, Connor, Potter, Moncur, Ridley, Hennis, Hotchkiss, Winn, Hogan, Pearn

Horden CW: Griffith, Bowes, Robson, Hodgson, Bell, Broom, Bolam, Yorke, Turnbull, Doughty, Dobinson

Wearside League Horden CW, who incidentally fielded ex-Bishops centre back Paul Griffith in goal, were put under pressure straight away with the impressive Olly Hotchkiss engineering most of the early attacks from a deep lying midfield role.

On 9 minutes Chris Winn got on the end of a low cross from debutant Alfie Pearn to slide home and seemingly settle any ‘nerves’ for a confidence shy Bishops.

However, as the half progressed the visitors grew into the game and had a series of good efforts on the Bishop goal. Firstly, a far post header struck the post with Liversedge helpless and then just before half time Liversedge was forced into a superb reaction save to tip over a point-blank effort. HT 1-0.

Bishops continued the start of the 2nd half in the same manner as they ended the first 45 minutes and on 52 minutes Horden drew themselves level with a deserved equaliser. Liversedge was only able to deflect a low shot from the right back out to an attacker who had the simple task of a ‘tap-in’.

The game had begun to become a little ‘niggly’ as the visitors sensed an opportunity to upset the odds further and a couple of Horden bookings preceded a much needed second goal for Bishops as Winn rose expertly to plant a header past Griffith from a pin point Hogan centre.

This gave Bishops some much needed impetus and a third goal nearly arrived when a header looked like it was handled on the goaline by a Horden defender. The resultant corner did however bring the goal that sealed the victory with just 10 minutes remaining and it arrived via defender Liam Potter who turned on the ball to fire in through a sea of bodies.

Winn looked like he may well get his hat trick and add some gloss to the score line but his effort when well placed was superbly saved by Griffith down to his left. FT 3-1. ATT 131.

MATCH REPORT: 17/10/20

Northern League Division One – Whickham 4-1 Bishop Auckland Whickham: Ward, Howard, Exley, Bisset, Errington, Burrell, Robson, Doyle, Atkinson, Newton, McNall

Bishop Auckland: Liversedge, Cain, Potter, Naisbett, Goldsborough, Connor, Waller Hotchkiss, Winn, Hogan, Waud

Report taken from whickhamfc.com

The early pressure from ’s side paid off when Jack Robson gave them the lead after 7 minutes – reacting to Bishop Auckland’s failed clearance from a Charlie Exley cross – taking the ball down from his chest and finishing into the near corner of the net. Both sides received many free-kicks with the visitors nearly equalising from one after a free-kick centrally outside the area was fired towards Regan Ward with the young goalkeeper able to keep a hold of the ball.

McNall and Bisset both had chances before the break with neither able to finish their chances including a sweeping move towards the edge of the box which allowed Bisset space to shoot but the 16-year old unfortunately missed his chance – firing just wide of the post. HT 1-0.

Despite more pressure from the away side – the Lang Jacks doubled their lead shortly before the hour mark with Atkinson heading home his sixth goal of the season.

Robson continued to cause problems down the right-hand side and played a big part in the third goal when dinking a crisp pass over the top of Bishop’s defence allowing Atkinson to charge towards goal with the forward cutting back onto his right-foot before burying the shot into the bottom corner.

In the 75th minute The Two Blues pulled a goal back after a trip in the penalty area with the spot-kick being converted by captain – Christopher Winn – to make the last 15 minutes interesting.

Nearly 10 minutes later any hope of a Bishop’s comeback were slashed as Atkinson picked out Bisset inside the area with the youngster’s effort deflecting in for his first goal of the season. FT 4-1. ATT 150. ACTION SHOTS

BISHOP AUCKLAND FC SPONSORSHIP!

Bishop Auckland FC Chairman, Steve Coulthard, has an exciting new update on a huge sponsorship deal for the club:

“I am delighted to announce an absolutely superb main sponsorship deal for Bishop AFC. A London based broadband company - Voneus Ltd.

Voneus is an established company which specialises in fast rural broadband and has recently awarded Victoria Jewitt the post of Community Engagement Team Leader. Victoria’s hard work and dedication to Bishop AFC, has managed to secure an amazing five figure sponsorship for the club. This also includes ground sponsorship for the forthcoming year.

This is fantastic news, not only for the club, but also the local community. The start of a substantial sponsorship partnership between ourselves and a multi million pound company – Voneus.

I would like to say a special thank you to Victoria for bringing this sponsorship to BAFC and all the hard work she does. The sponsorship deal is absolutely fantastic for the club, and we are extremely grateful for receiving financial backing in these difficult times and brings a huge boost to our finances in these difficult times.

The stadium is to be renamed: The Voneus Stadium.

In a recent announcement, Chris Burns reviewed his main sponsorship commitments due to COVID restrictions but will still be a very large partner in the club which we very much appreciate.

The partnership between Bishop AFC and Voneus, will also assist with the general running of the ground. After Victoria and myself met with the Voneus CEO at the ground, he has also offered financial assistance to the management team. Again, a fantastic opportunity to bring new players into the club, helping us climb up the league & support the community.

Once again, thanks to Victoria for her dedication and complete support in securing this amazing deal for Bishop Auckland FC. We wish her good luck, and further success in her new role working for Voneus alongside the football club.

This is a highly welcomed superb sponsorship package and brings stability and ambition back to the club.”

10 YEARS AT HERITAGE PARK

‘The good, the bad & the ugly’ by Gavin Hadden

As the heading suggests to sum up our first decade at Heritage Park there has been some good, plenty of bad and occasionally a little bit of ‘ugly’ both on and off the pitch. Goals galore, the odd big win, too many heavy defeats – it’s fair to say its not been the fortress we all hoped for after spending 8 years homeless after selling Kingsway. This week I have come up with a selection of the worst moments we have experienced at Heritage Park…

‘The Bad’

Saturday 13th November 2010, Bishop Auckland 2-3 Consett - A day that started with a call to arms for supporters to get the new Heritage Park pitch in playable condition (pictured below) for the first ever competitive game v Consett ended in disappointing fashion aided by one of the worst refereeing decisions seen at the ground. The pre match pitch issues, kamikaze nature of the game and ultimately the deflated feeling at full time would become all too familiar in the following years. Consett went 2-0 up, Bishops rallied with Dan Hawkins scoring the first competitive Bishops goals at the ground but a late Consett attack, able to continue when the assistant referee inadvertently knocked the ball back into play, brought the winner.

18th April 2018, Bishop Auckland 0-6 Sunderland RCA - Season 2017/18 was mostly a torrid one and almost a disastrous one for us Bishops fans. The first half disintegration at Heritage Park, as we tried to scramble enough points to ensure we avoided the unthinkable relegation to Division 2 of the Northern League, was a particularly humiliating evening. RCA raced into a 5-goal lead in no time on a sunny early spring evening as the Bishops players appeared almost shellshocked as to what was happening in front of them. The goals dried up in the 2nd half to at least ensure the score line didn’t threaten to reach double figures as at one point that was a real possibility. RCA were to go one better (7-0) a few weeks later in the return fixture but thankfully we finished the season above the now defunct Jarrow Roofing with 43 pts from 42 league games.

19th September 2020, Bishop Auckland 1-5 Billingham Synthonia – A very recent memory and makes it into this list due to the apparent lack of effort shown by some players involved that day against 2nd Division ‘Synners’ in the FA Vase qualifying round. Clearly some players had other things on their minds as the visitors were able to cruise through the game without so much of a glove being laid on them from kick off. An air of ‘resignation’ seemed to accompany this Saturday afternoon just 5 weeks ago, felt on the terraces as much as on the pitch. 3-0 behind at half time there was only a very brief response by Bishops at the start of the 2nd half before the game drifted to its conclusion with Synners adding two more goals. Ian Chandler oversaw just one more game before he made way for a new management team. Bishop Auckland FC 2020-21… GOALKEEPERS

Andy Toman (Manager) A favourite with Bishops supporters as a player in the 1980s Andy was appointed on 1st October 2020 after the club parted company with Ian Chandler. An ex-professional with Lincoln City, Darlington and Hartlepool United Andy is also a UEFA qualified coach with previous managerial experience in the Northern league with Guisborough Town and Northallerton. Andy has most recently been living and working in Norway.

Ian McGuckin (Assistant Manager) Ian like Andy also has experience as a professional with Fulham, Oxford and Hatlepool United and is also a UEFA qualified coach. Ian did have a brief spell here at Bishops in the early 2000s when Brian Honour was in charge.

North Shields History…

North Shields Athletic was originally formed in 1896 and played initially in the South Shields & District league. They progressed through the Northern Combination, Northern Alliance and North Eastern League and became a major force in North East Football, outside the Football League, moving to play at Hawkey’s Lane around 1900. They originally joined the Northern Alliance, before switching to the North Eastern League in 1908.

The club emerged as Preston Colliery F.C. after the Great War, reverting to North Shields A.F.C. in 1928. They enjoyed tremendous local support with a record 12,800 watching the local derby with South Shields in October 1936. Shields won the North Eastern League title in 1950, before the league folded in 1958. Spells in the Midland League and Northern Counties league followed before the club joined the Northern league in the 1964-65 season, finishing third at their first attempt.

The Robins moment of crowning glory came in 1969, when they won the FA Amateur Cup by beating Sutton United in front of 47,000 spectators at . Shields were a goal down after only four minutes but won with second half strikes from Richie Hall and – both laid on by Orrick, a shipyard worker from Byker. The club, which also won the Northern League title and Challenge Cup that same year, were declared joint holders of the European Amateur Cup the following season when two games against Italian Side Almas resulted in a level aggregate score.

In 1982, the Robins won 1-0 at Halifax Town in the FA Cup First Round, Bede McCaffrey scoring the all-important goal that year. Walsall were the visitors to Appleby Park in the second round, for only the second time in the club’s history and left with a 3-0 victory.

Having moved into the national pyramid by joining the NCEL in 1989, North Shields earned promotion to the Northern Premier League by winning the title in 1992. However, financial problems arose, which meant Appleby Park had to be sold to and lead to the club folding. However, they almost instantly reformed as a new club, thanks to the efforts of local people and many of the current committee.

The club, headed by new chairman Richard Slade, sought and gained immediate admission to the Second Division of the Wearside League. They were promoted to the top flight as runners-up in their first season, briefly reverting back to North Shields Athletic for four seasons. They enjoyed success in local cup competitions, too, the Shipowners Cup and NFA Senior Bowl added to that title in the 1998/99 treble-winning season.

In 1999, the club moved to Ralph Gardner Park, now known as the Daren Persson Stadium, and began to develop the ground to meet the Northern League standards. Once again known as North Shields FC, the club began to kick on, league runners-up in 2000/01 and winners by eight points the following season. They also continued to collect silverware elsewhere, winning the Monkwearmouth Charity Cup in 2001 and again in 2003. After a fifteen-year absence, the Robins gained promotion back into the Northern League in 2004 following their third Wearside League title and a further Shipowners Cup triumph.

After ten years in Division Two, the club belatedly returned to the top tier having narrowly missed out in 2010/11. The Robins shattered records en route to the 2013/14 championship including the Daren Persson Stadium attendance which was 1,312 for the visit of West Allotment Celtic and the presentation of the 2nd division trophy.

But better was to come as the Robins swept past the likes of Phoenix Sports, Erith & Belvedere and Highworth Town to reach the 2015 FA Vase final at Wembley. In front of almost 10,000 fans, Shields went behind to North End, but a late equaliser by Gareth Bainbridge and Adam Forster’s extra-time finish clinched the coveted trophy for ’s men. The club also finished fourth in division one to cap a memorable season.

The following season 2015-6 Shields finished fifth in the league whilst lifting the Northumberland Senior Cup beating Blyth Spartans 4-3 in a thrilling Final at St James Park. Gary Ormston opened the scoring followed by a Gareth Bainbridge brace with Ryan Carr notching a dramatic last minute winner. Manager Graham Fenton left the club in September 2016 to join South Shields, with Jon McDonald replacing him as manager. McDonald kept North Shields at the top until early April, losing out to South Shields in the title race. North Shields also lost the Senior Cup to Blyth and the League Cup to South Shields after which Jon McDonald left the club.

Shields moved to appoint Assistant Manager, Brian Smith as the new Manager, with Gary Ormston stepping up as Assistant and Andy Gowans joining the coaching set up alongside Wilf Keilty. Brian Smith left the club in February 2018 to be replaced by ex Whitley Bay boss Marc Nash. Nash brought with him Anthony Woodhouse who was welcomed back to his old stamping ground as assistant. The duo marked their debut in charge with a sensational 6-5 victory over Jarrow Roofing after the Robins were trailing 5-2 late in the game. With Steve Swinyard coming in as coach the new management team guided the club to a final 8th position as the season closed. The latest campaign of 2019-2020 before halted due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the side saw an impressive 4th placed finish with games in hand on the teams above. The team scored 56 goals only conceding 37.

North Shields FC 2020-21… GOALKEEPERS Greg Purvis Greg signed from Team Northumbria after spending time at Sunderland AFC Academy. Greg has also spent time in America playing for Limestone College. The goalkeeper commands his area and is confident between the sticks. A real fan favourite with his match winning performances lead to Greg being Supporters player of the year.

Callum Elliott Excellent young prospect. Currently dual signed and playing for Whitley Bay Reserves in Northern Alliance. A product of Tyne Met College who should have an exciting future. Great attitude and constantly wants to improve.

DEFENDERS Tom Bexton Former Wolves, South Shields and Whitley Bay defender. Comfortable in possession which is what attracted him to us. Spent some time at Spartans during pre-season but we are delighted to have secured him. Has been a great addition so far this season with top performances at the back.

Andrew Cartwright New recruit joins The Robins from spending 2 years in Perth Australia playing for Western Knights Soccer Club. The former Sunderland AFC youngster shone through the ranks before joining Blyth Spartans. Cartwright has also played for England C.

Robbie Christie Robbie is a player we would have signed at the start of last season if it wasn't for him taking a scholarship at Newcastle University. Once we knew he was available we were interested as young, left footed players of that quality are few and far between. He can play in defence and also higher up and with his pace he can cause teams problems.

Chris McDonald McDonald is a strong and versatile defender/ midfielder with experience from captaining Whitley Bay to playing for Berwick Rangers in Scottish League Second Division more recently playing for Morpeth Town. Chris has scored some spectacular goals in his playing career. Chris was voted as the player of the Season for 2019/20 season

Anthony Myers The versatile and no-nonsense defender is powerful in the air, a great passer of the ball and strong in the tackle. Can also play in the centre of midfield. Former clubs include Seaham Red Star, Jarrow Roofing and Hebburn Town.

Paul New The defender, who has experience playing military football for the Royal Marines and the Royal Navy, has previous experience of the Northern League, having spent four seasons with Darlington Railway Athletic. Work commitments saw Paul move to Cornwall where he played for St Blazey of the South West Peninsula League Premier West before making the move back north.

MIDFIELDERS Ryan Carr Nippy forward with a keen eye for goal who has progressed through the ranks at AFC Farsley. Now playing in his native North East, he scored the last-minute winner in the 2016 Senior Cup Final. Not only good with his feet but can score great goals with his head. Vice captain of the squad.

Nick Cassidy Joined from Consett, after spending time on loan at Belle View in 2016-17 from , where, despite arriving as a midfielder, he showed his versatility by turning out at right-back. Suffered an injury which needed an operation that kept him out for the rest of the season. Signed for Consett and was a part of the DCC-winning team.

Cameron Cunningham Extremely talented young player that burst onto the scene last season at Whitley Bay. Made the transition from junior into senior football with ease and is tipped to go very far if he continues to progress at a rapid rate.

Adam Forster Adam ‘Skip’ Forster rejoins the club for his second spell.
