I would like to extend a very warm welcome to all West Auckland players, officials and supporters and I hope they enjoy their afternoon with us. Fans of both clubs will hardly need reminding that our sides were involved in two dramatic cup ties as well as two hard fought league games last season. West Auckland came out on top on all four occasions that we met during their most successful season for many years, which of course included a trip to Wembley for the all- Northern League FA Vase Final. They have made a very good start to this season and will undoubtedly provide a tough challenge today. Unfortunately, the weather intervened in midweek forcing the postponement of our scheduled Tuesday night game against Norton & Stockton. Let’s hope this is not a sign of things to come in the months ahead. Having brought in new striker Ash Davis last week, Ian has again been busy strengthening the side with the signing this week of defenders James Novak and Bradley Brooking. We welcome them both and hope they enjoy their time here at Hillheads. Meanwhile Daryll Donnelly and Seb Anzevui have left for pastures new and everyone at Whitley Bay FC would like to thank both players for the contribution they made at Hillheads and we wish them well in the future. Following today’s game we are on our travels again next week, with a trip to Bishop Auckland on Wednesday evening followed by a return to south west Durham on Saturday when we visit Shildon, both tough games against in-form sides. Our next game at Hillheads will be on Tuesday 9th October when we take on Marske United. Paul McIlduff Chairman HOWAY THE BAY! An immediate clearance down field eluded the Bay defence and saw the ball played square by Scott Fenwick into the path of Gary Shaw who fired past Hayes to put the visitors ahead. Whitley fought back strongly and pegged City into their own half as they searched for an equaliser. After 17 minutes, Chris Fawcett provided Morris with a cross from the left which Jobling saved well. Kyle Hayes poised to save a Durham header captain Madden was booked for a challenge which put Davis off his stride as he raced clear and the ball ran just far enough ahead for Jobling to avert the danger, diving to gather the ball. Whitley kept up the pressure and when Chow flicked the ball on to Lee Kerr, his first time effort clipped the bar with Jobling beaten. Five minutes before half time, Madden drove a City free kick over the bar while at the other end, just Paul Robinson with his daughter Madeline, the Bay mascot x115465_WBFC_p1_dw_x115465_WBFC_p1_dw 27/09/2012 13:08 Page 5 MATCH REPORT BW5 before the break, Davis skilfully brought a long ball under control before firing in a shot that Jobling saved, to keep his side one goal up at the interval. Whitley were immediately back on the attack when play restarted and they forced a series of corners in rapid succession, which the Durham rearguard did well to defend. When Chow saw a header crash off the bar it was beginning to look as if it would not be Whitley’s day, but their persistence was rewarded just moments later when Paul Robinson’s right wing Paul Robinson on the attack corner was headed home by Brian Smith and Whitley let their concentration slip for a crucial Whitley were back on level terms.
