I would like to extend a very warm welcome to all players, officials and supporters of Consett and I hope they enjoy their afternoon with us. Since our last home game we have battled our way to the Semi Final of the FA Vase for the fourth successive season and have continued our excellent league form with wins at Ashington, South Shields, Shildon and Dunston. Tuesday night’s game at Dunston looked like ending our 11 match winning run but the team simply refuse to lie down and two goals in the last three minutes secured an unlikely three points. It is great to have captain David Coulson back in the team after recovering from the cruciate injury he suffered at Barwell almost a year ago and his header that won the game was something special! We are now in a period of top of the table encounters that may well decide our destiny in terms of the League title and promotion prospects. Consett inflicted out heaviest league defeat of the season when we met at Belle Vue in October and they have surprised many by their excellent form which has seen them lead the table for much of the season. We can be in no doubt that this afternoon will provide us with one of our sternest tests of the season, but our own outstanding form since Christmas means that we go into the game with confidence. Let’s hope we witness a game that lives up to the billing of Northern League match of the day! We are due to travel to Bishop Auckland’s new home at Heritage Park on Monday, before concentrating our minds on the FA Vase Semi Final against Poole Town. The away leg next Saturday is all ticket and due to a 2000 capacity, we have been allocated just 300 tickets, so we would advise all fans intending to travel to buy tickets today to avoid disappointment. The return leg here at Hillheads on Saturday April 2nd is not all ticket but it will undoubtedly ease congestion at the turnstiles if as many fans as possible buy tickets ahead of the game. These are now on sale. Finally I would like to thank all Bay fans for your continued fantastic support for the Club. Paul McIlduff Chairman HOWAY THE BAY! EDITORIAL Another year has come and gone, and we trust that 1989 will be a happy and prosperous one for all our members. If our Society is to continue to flourish, however, it is essential that more members should play an active part in running its affairs. Ken Brown, our Secretary since 1983 (and acting Programme Organiser for the last year), is resigning at the Annual General Meeting in May, and Irene Blackburn, who is responsible for the Members' Interests and Second Time Around sections of the Journal, will be giving up her position as Research Editor later in the year. We are very grateful to them both for all the work they have done on our behalf. In addition to these two posts, we are still short of a Programme Organiser. If you know of anyone who might be willing to take on any of these jobs please let Ken Brown know as soon as possible - otherwise the Society may come to a grinding halt. One of the most important events of 1988 as far as the Society was concerned was the publication of the long-awaited Directory of Members' Interests. Its production entailed a great deal of hard work on the part of those responsible, and it also placed a severe strain on the Society's finances. In view of the fact that it was initially offered free to members (only the cost of postage and packing being charged), the demand for copies was disappointingly small. Copies are still available, and although now priced £2.75 each (post free to addresses in the U.K.), they are very good value.

Yes here we are, back at the start of a new campaign for what will undoubtedly be a very competitive season. I am confident we will do well as in addition to the squad we had last season we have made some great new signings in Chris Swailes, Jordan Nellis, Lee McAndrew, Johnny Wilson and Jack Betts with only Matty Grieve and Stephen Buzzeo leaving for pastures new.

As outlined in my initial letter, as well as looking at key areas of the subject, the visit had a particular focus on provision for teaching and learning about Britain’s diversity. The visit provided valuable information which will contribute to our national evaluation and reporting. Published reports are likely to list the names of the contributing institutions but individual institutions will not be identified in the main text. All feedback letters will be published on the Ofsted website at the end of each half-term. The evidence used to inform the judgements made included interviews with staff and learners, scrutiny of relevant documentation, analysis of students’ work, meeting with the school council and peer mentors and observation of 11 lessons The overall effectiveness of citizenship was judged to be satisfactory with some good features. Achievement and standards Achievement and standards are satisfactory. Students gain knowledge and understanding about how government and Parliament function, social justice, environmental issues and aspects of Britain’s diversity. However there are gaps in some key aspects of the citizenship curriculum. The development of skills of enquiry and communication is satisfactory and improving.
