If our Society is to continue to flourish, however, it is essential that more members should play an active part in running its affairs. Ken Brown, our Secretary since 1983 (and acting Programme Organiser for the last year), is resigning at the Annual General Meeting in May, and Irene Blackburn, who is responsible for the Members' Interests and Second Time Around sections of the Journal, will be giving up her position as Research Editor later in the year. We are very grateful to them both for all the work they have done on our behalf. In addition to these two posts, we are still short of a Programme Organiser. If you know of anyone who might be willing to take on any of these jobs please let Ken Brown know as soon as possible - otherwise the Society may come to a grinding halt. One of the most important events of 1988 as far as the Society was concerned was the publication of the long-awaited Directory of Members' Interests. Its production entailed a great deal of hard work on the part of those responsible, and it also placed a severe strain on the Society's finances. In view of the fact that it was initially offered free to members (only the cost of postage and packing being charged), the demand for copies was disappointingly small. Copies are still available, and although now priced £2.75 each (post free to addresses in the U.K.), they are very good value.

As outlined in my initial letter, as well as looking at key areas of the subject, the visit had a particular focus on provision for teaching and learning about Britain’s diversity. The visit provided valuable information which will contribute to our national evaluation and reporting. Published reports are likely to list the names of the contributing institutions but individual institutions will not be identified in the main text. All feedback letters will be published on the Ofsted website at the end of each half-term. The evidence used to inform the judgements made included interviews with staff and learners, scrutiny of relevant documentation, analysis of students’ work, meeting with the school council and peer mentors and observation of 11 lessons The overall effectiveness of citizenship was judged to be satisfactory with some good features. Achievement and standards Achievement and standards are satisfactory. Students gain knowledge and understanding about how government and Parliament function, social justice, environmental issues and aspects of Britain’s diversity. However there are gaps in some key aspects of the citizenship curriculum. The development of skills of enquiry and communication is satisfactory and improving.

    1 The Way of the Sea Jarrow to Warkworth Introduction The Way of the Sea has been set up as one of the new Northern Saints Trails to provide a link between Warkworth on St Oswald's Way and another new Northern Saints Trail, The Way of Learning. Linking these three routes together provides a continuous 124 mile pilgrimage route between Lindisfarne and Durham. This route can of course be walked in either direction. When we think of the Northern Saints like Aidan and Cuthbert, we rightly think of them as great walkers and it’s likely that they will sometimes have walked along this coast, but actually it’s probably more likely that they will have taken the actual way of the sea! Aidan was closely linked with monastic settlements in South Shields and Hartlepool, so he probably sailed from Lindisfarne to those places which would have been quicker and, before the Vikings started their raids, safer too. The Way of the Sea itself is 62 kilometres or 38.5 miles in length. You may occasionally find Northern Saints Trails signs, but this route is the same as the England Coast Path all the way from North Shields to Warkworth so follow the ECP signs which are frequent. Sometimes you may see an acorn symbol as the ECP is one of the National Trails. You will also find Northumberland Coast Path signs between Cresswell and Warkworth. The coastal path itself generally stays on the higher ground, but in some places such as Druridge or Whitley bays you may prefer to walk on the sand.

    !1 JARROW TO DURHAM Route Description Introduction The route is 61 kilometres or 38 miles. It is the most urban of the routes with two thirds of the route on minor roads or paved paths, but it is a route that is full of interest. I have divided the route into 5 sections of between 10 to 17 kms in length." Section 1 Jarrow to South Shields 10 km" Jarrow Leaving St Paul's Church, cross the road at Church Bank, continue along the wide tarmac path opposite (River Don footpath) until you reach mosaic incorporated into tarmac. Do not cross the bridge here, but take the left fork adjacent to river, under Straker Street (A185) and across to a point where the metro line crosses A19. Turn left, under the metro line bridge and left again, then first right following River Don footpath, under A19 - WATCH YOUR HEAD! Continue on the paved path to Jarrow Cemetery. Cross Cemetery Road and continue walking along the River Don footpath, soon crossing from the west to the east side of the river then back again to the west side at the next bridge. Stay on this side of the river until you reach Roman Road." The Robin Hood Pub is a few metres further on to your left, but you cross over Roman Road to pass under Leam Lane bridge (the A194). Hedworth Lane bends to the left, but you take the tarmac path !2 which continues by the river, until it comes out again at Hedworth Lane. Turn right and when you reach the top of the hill cross the road and bear left to Thorntree Walk with the Greyhound Inn nearby to your right.
