ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

This year’s AGM will take place in the Clubhouse at 20:00hrs on Friday 24th September 2021.

ONSHORE COMMITTEE

The Onshore Committee, chaired by the RC Onshore, has responsibility for Club social activities, the facilities and Bar. Details of its members can be found on the Onshore section on the Club website.

Running social events has, of course, been particularly challenging in 2020 and into early 2021. Nevertheless, the planning continues, and we are committed to offering Members as varied a programme as possible, so as to appeal to all tastes, and there’s lots to look forward to in 2021 Programme 2021-22 once the Clubhouse re-opens. Many day-time events will be added throughout the year, for example we hope to be able to re-start the art classes and hold one-off events such as the ceramic painting afternoon. All events will be advertised well in advance via the weekly Newsletter, Club Social board, and our social media pages. If you have any feedback or ideas regarding social events, please email [email protected] or speak to any of the team as your input is much valued. We also warmly welcome Members who are able to help with setting up and/or clearing down events, so please let us know if you would consider occasionally assisting with this.

In 2020 the Club should have been celebrating its 70 th Anniversary, so we plan to make up for that in June 2021. Below are the major events already in the Club diary for the year ahead and into 2022. We very much look forward to enjoying these with fellow Members as any restrictions allow, plus Bingo, quizzes, Ladies and Gentlemen’s lunches, special daytime events, Music Nights and more.

2021 5th June - Commodore’s Ladies’ Night 26 June - Founder’s Cup Race 31 July - Summer Ball 7 August - Summer Extravaganza 21 August - BHYC Regatta event 04 September - Barn Dance 16 October - Laying Up Supper 23 October - Trafalgar Night 6th November - Race Night 19/20 November - Christmas Gift Fayre 19 December - Christmas Party 31 December - New Year’s Eve Party

2022 January 28th - Burns Night February 19 th - Music Night March 19 th - Fitting Out Supper

We have a stalwart and indispensable group of Members who volunteer their time each Wednesday morning as the Last of the Summer Wine group, tackling essential tasks to keep our Clubhouse and boat areas safe and fit for purpose, whilst saving the Club significant sums that would otherwise have to be spent on external contractors. There is also now a team, the Bosun’s Buddies, who assist the Bosun each Thursday morning with all things boat related. Do you have a few hours to spare and would like to help in this way? It’s informal, usually involves doughnuts, and is a great way to meet other Members and contribute to your Club.

Programme 2021-22 BAR & CATERING

With our wonderful views of the Harbour, the Bar and Galley offer a warm welcome to Members and their guests, with a well-stocked and varied drinks and snacks selection and some great food. We can help you celebrate a special day as we cater for all types of events, from birthday and retirement parties to wedding receptions. If you would like to book a private event, please use the Booking Form available from the Office or Bar or email [email protected] or call 01983 872289. Bar and catering times can be viewed via the links on the Club website www.bhyc.org.uk or via the weekly Newsletter.

RACING

All members are welcome to join in the racing. Full Racing Instructions covering all Club races are available on the BHYC website and from the foyer or the Jubilee Centre. Racing instructions covering the events organised under the burgee of East Wight Combined Clubs (EWCC) will be issued in the summer as part of their Regatta Series Programme. It is essential that helms sign the indemnity form in the Jubilee Centre before their first sail of the season. All helms must Sign-On in the Jubilee Centre.

We start our main season at the Easter Series with a series of eight races. Please study BHYC Racing and Training programme in the middle of this booklet where full details are given; we have tried our very best to please everyone from racers to recreational sailors alike. More information will follow throughout the season in the Club Newsletter. Please pick up an EWCC 2020 Programme at the Bar for details of Regattas around the region when available in April.

FORMAT OF RACING

To reduce congestion in the harbour and to reduce the risk of collision, the majority of starts at summer weekends will be from a committee boat outside the harbour as identified below. There will still be starts from the Harbour Line for all races in the Icebreaker and Evening series. Where two races are designated, the points from each race will contribute towards the series totals.

The start time and starting line, Home (H) or Committee Boat (CB), shown in the programme is for the first race. For the committee boat starts please allow enough time to sail out of the harbour and get to the committee boat.

Programme 2021-22

SAILING SUPPORT CREWS "DUTYMAN"

All competitors are encouraged to sign on to "Dutyman", on the website. It is your chance to volunteer to be Race Officer, Race Officer's Assistant, Patrol Boat Helm or Patrol Boat Crew. You can do as many duties as you like, although those participating in sailing will be encouraged to undertake duties which will be allocated according to experience / qualification. The next few weeks’ diary of duties is always put in the Newsletter and more than those few weeks is available on the website. Should you have any difficulties with "Dutyman" please speak to anyone on the Offshore Committee who would welcome your question. Helms require a minimum of RYA Powerboat Level 2 Certificate and preferably a VHF Certificate. Crews need no qualifications but are expected to be reasonably fit and agile. Crews wishing to gain qualifications should watch the notice board and Newsletter for details of courses. Offers of help for support boat duties should contact Programme 2021-22 [email protected] . Race Officers should arrive 1 hour 30 minutes before the race for Committee Boat (CB) Starts and 1 hour before the start for Home (H) Starts. Crews should report to the Race Officer 1 hour 30 minutes prior to Committee Boat (CB) Start and at least 1 hour before a Home (H) Start.

BHYC REGATTA

The BHYC Regatta will be on 23 rd August. Details and racing instructions will be available on the BHYC website and in the East Wight Combined Clubs website ( www.ewcc.co.uk ) and their Programme which also provides information on other local regattas. Full details will be posted on the notice board.

Bembridge Village Regatta is on Saturday 1 st August, hosted by BHYC with BSC. Scow Open Championships will take place on the 16 th August.

Full details of all the Regattas can be found in the East Wight Combined Clubs (EWCC) Programme available from the Club from April.

INTER-CLUB RACING

Apart from the EWCC Regattas, there are ‘home and away’ interclub team events for Scows. These are against Yarmouth on 1 st & 29 th June. BHYC competes with four other clubs in Mermaids and in the summer months.

SCOW OWNERS

We want to encourage as many Scows on the water as possible in 2020. Scows don't have to race (although many find that gives a sense of purpose to the sail and makes it more fun), just get out on the water and enjoy some sailing time with like-minded people. We try to have Scow social suppers from time to time. If you have any other social Scow ideas please do not hesitate to contact the Scow Captain Mike Bottoms by sending an email to [email protected] Mke would be happy to help you rig and tune your scow as well as answer any questions about the Scow class.

BEMBRIDGE SWAN OWNERS

We want to encourage as many Swans on the water as possible in 2020 and have lots of ideas that are in addition to the listed events, so please do look out for details in the Club weekly Newsletter, Club Facebook pages and on the Club notice board. Suggestions include passages, picnic and fishing trips.

For those who enjoy class racing, the Bembridge Swan series for the BHYC Swan Trophy runs throughout the season in conjunction with the Club Racing Programme. The Trophy will be awarded to the winner.

Designed by Alan Coombes in 1955, the Bembridge Swan has been a familiar sight at the Club for many years and the Swan Class Captain, is optimistic that five or more Swans will be sailing or racing together throughout the season, a fine sight and great fun. The Club has its own Swan, Scottie, which can be hired for racing or recreational sailing.

HIRE OF CLUB BOATS

There are a number of Club boats, kayaks and stand up paddle boards that can be hired all year round. If you wish to book a boat then please fill in the interactive form on the website and submit it or call the office for availability. Programme 2021-22

CUPS AND TROPHIES

Cups and Trophies will be awarded to the overall winners in Fast Handicap, Slow Handicap and Scow Class, other classes subject to entrants, in each of the series. The Offshore Committee will consider the addition of cups for other classes at the end of the season.

The prizes will be presented twice a year. At the Fitting Out Supper in March prizes will be presented for the Frostbite series. The Icebreaker prizes will be presented on the last day of the series. At the Laying Up Supper in October all the prizes from the Easter to the Autumn Series are presented along with the special races for that season.

Any cups or trophies for the regattas will be presented on the last day of those Regattas as laid out in the EWCC programme. A full breakdown of the prizes presented and the winners is available on the BHYC Web site via the Club’s results page.
