SPRING 2014 COURSES
BIDS 232-99: Diversity and Adaptation. Students will study the biological, cultural and psychological diversity in Ecuador and Peru, past and present. Focus will be the importance of the physical and social environments in influenc- ing the adaptation and evolution of species and cultures. Readings for this class include Weiners The Beak of the Finch, Kanes Savages, DAltroys The Incas, and Heaneys Cradle of Gold.
SPNE 325: Special Topic - In Search of an Inca: Culture and Identity in the Andes. The course explores the cul- tural history of the Andean region from the Spanish Conquest to the current times through the study of the Andean utopianism, as embodied in the aspiration for a return of the Inca, a mythological fair ruler who would transform the Andes, a territory marked by poverty and oppression, along more egalitarian lines. The course will include visits to museums and sites of archeological and cultural importance.
PSY 245: Intro to Cross-Cultural Psychology. Students will study issues of cultural and ethnic group identity and bias/prejudice in Latin America, focusing on Ecuador and Peru. Some topics of focus will include issues of post- colonialism in both countries, attitudes of and about Indigenous groups in both countries, ethnic and cultural identity and its development in both countries, and solutions to problems based in ethnic/cultural oppression and prejudice.
Spanish Language, Conversation and Literature Students will be tested and placed at an appropriate level of instruction at the beginning of the program. Advanced students may select a course in Latin American literature or Quechua (an indigenous) language.
ACADEMIC FOCUS This program would be of particular interest to students of Latin American studies, environmental studies, psychol- ogy, international relations and Spanish language and culture.
ELIGIBILITY This program is open to sophomores, juniors and seniors in good academic and social standing with a minimum GPA of 2.5 and who have completed at least one course in college-level Spanish. Students who have not completed a course in Spanish must successfully complete one (with a C- or better) in the fall semester before the program. More advanced language study is strongly recommended. Students will be placed in the appropriate level of language study upon arrival. Due to the challenging nature of study abroad, student academic and disciplinary records will be carefully screened.
