Welcome The Barwick & Stoford Messenger

Welcome to the Spring/Summer edition of the messenger, we hope you all had a fantastic Christmas and a fun, sunny Easter weekend. Over the past few months there has been some juggling about of people within the committee so that we are all able to volunteer in roles that best suit our lifestyles. Therefore, I would like to introduce myself as the new Chair, and welcome the Vice Chair Gill Gillott, and Secretaries Keith and Shirley Partridge into their new roles. They have settled into their roles very well and have contributed towards the events we have hosted since Christmas. As a committee we are now full steam ahead trying to organise the biggest and best Village Fete so far! With all the new ideas and experience flying about it is looking to be a fantastic day, all we need now is good weather! Please see the centre fold of the messenger for our Dog show entry form and your own poster for the Village fete. The flyer included with the Messenger has a copy of the Crafts entry form and details of the categories plus info about the usual Tombola collection. If you want extra copies of either then please email Gwen [email protected] Remember to save the date! Like us on Facebook for updates on events, local messages and more; search ‘Barwick & Stoford Community Committee- BSCC’. Lastly, I would like to just apologise for the fact that Santa’s visit got cancelled at the very last minute which meant we could not let everyone know. Yvonne Starkey, BSCC Chair

From The Parish Council

I think I speak for the whole Council when I say we were delighted to hear that Gina Seaton’s eight years of unstinting service to Coker Ward was recognised in the re- cent elections when she retained her seat. She has done much to help our Parish, attending all of our monthly meetings and last year supported the Recreational Trust’s successful grant application to SSDC for funds towards the large climbing frame. Gina is joined at SSDC for the next four years by Stoford resident Nicola Clark who takes the place of Cathy Bakewell who stood down this year; we look forward to welcoming Nicola at our meetings. The Parish Council itself remains largely unchanged, with Steve Fay as Vice Chair and Jane Healey, Graham Lincoln, Keith Partridge, Sheridan Risby, Ray Sibley and Jackie Unsworth continuing as Councillors for the next 4 years. My thanks to David Soughton for his service on the Parish Council - you will be missed David. I am very pleased to say that at May’s Council meeting we filled one of the vacant seats by co -opting Nick Entwistle from Barwick as a new Councillor, he will I am sure be a huge asset to the Council and I look forward to working with him. This still leaves one vacancy should anyone else wish to consider joining us. When I took up the role of Chair two years ago I was told by a previous incumbent that it was a poisoned chal- ice, well I am pleased to say that I have not succumbed yet and look forward to serving as Chair for another year. It gives me great pleasure to announce that the Parish Council has launched our own website. It has been designed and is managed by someone who grew up in our village, we followed due process and obtained a number of quotes and James Healey’s JRH Media came in with the best offer. Check out: http://www.barwickandstofordparishcouncil.co.uk/ . If you have content that you would like to add or information that you would like us to link to or display here then please contact myself or our Clerk , Kate [email protected] or call her on 07712 398985 and one of us will make sure it happens. Our focus for the next year will be:  Working with a legal firm we have engaged and the trustees of the Barwick & Stoford Recreational Trust to turn the BSRT into a CIO (Charitable Incorporated Organisation) which we hope will mean people are more willing to take on the role of Trustee. This change is also necessary as we push ahead with resur- recting the lapsed plan to build a new community hall on the eastern end of the recreation ground. We will be setting up a Community Hall Working Group and would welcome volunteers with relevant knowledge and experience to help us achieve our goal. We will obviously also be starting to think about fund raising initiatives so if you have any ideas then do please get in touch. 4

 The PC has approached Wildlife Trust for advice and support for our idea of turning the common land alongside Fairhouse Road into a bee and insect friendly wildflower meadow area with just a mown footpath through it. This will not only be environmentally friendly and attractive but have the added ben- efit of reducing our annual mowing bills! Please accept our apologies for the lack of a mown path recently, we delayed the first cut to leave the early dandeli- ons to feed the bees and then when we had to cancel our April meeting organis- ing a cut got overlooked.  We continue to oppose the Keyford development, in the main because of con- cerns over increased traffic through the narrow and unlit areas of our village and concerns over the increased flood risk. On the traffic front we still hold out hope for funding from the Small Improvement Scheme for traffic calming measures along Newton Road / Hoopers Lane but are now growing increasingly concerned about the damage being done to the steep banks of Church Hollow by both heavy vehicles and general traffic travelling at inappropriate speeds; aside from the risk to life and limb there is a concern that part of the graveyard is in danger of collapsing into the hollow. Councillor Keith Partridge is exploring the possibil- ity of re-starting our Community Speed Watch programme and if anyone is inter- ested to join then please contact our Clerk. Dog Fouling continues to be an ongoing major issue in our Parish with some people failing to clean up when their dogs foul on pavements and in the recreation ground. Pavements on the route that many children take walking to school are left in a dis- gusting state and the football team regularly have to spend upwards of an hour clearing the pitch before they play. The PC has even had reports of people taking their dogs into the children’s play areas in both Bridle Way and the Whitcross Rec- reation Ground, in spite of signs sating “No Dogs”. Dog mess is an eyesore and a health hazard. If you are a dog owner, you have a legal duty to clean up every time your dog messes in a public place. You can contact SSDC if your street is littered with dog mess and ask them to clean it. Unfortunate- ly, to date, SSDC have been singularly unhelpful in dealing with this issue despite one particular member of the PC contacting them on numerous occasions. Our new Beat Officer Georgina Crittenden has been much more engaged with the Council on this issue than her predecessors but I am sorry to say that at the mo- ment rather than dealing with the fouling issue she is having to investigate posters (purporting to be official in that they bear the SSDC logo) put up around the village which name and shame an individual, claiming a prosecution is imminent . Whilst I understand the frustration that has driven someone to take this action it is not the right way to go about it. Contact details for our new Beat Officer and PCSO can be found overleaf. Gwen O’Sullivan, PC Chair 5

Payments no longer need to be made in person, applica- tions don’t need to be posted and reporting an issue doesn’t have to wait until our office phone lines are open. If you need help on your first visit, there is a phone line that is linked up directly to our dedicated support team. A member of this team will be on the end of every phone call to us. From 20 May, our Cus- tomer Focussed Officers – the team which directly deals with requests from our communities - will be based at our Petters House office located in Yeovil’s town centre. Not only will this make us easier to reach, it will also mean that our housing, Council Tax and benefits experts will all be in one place, ready to assist the most vulnerable or in need.

Bridle Way

That part of Bridle Way from the edge of FairHouse Road until approximately just be- fore the two houses numbered 56 & 73 (as the change in the road surface denotes) is actually the responsibility of Housing Group and issues should be reported to them not Highways division. Those who rent either homes or garages through Yarlington can create an account with the MyYarlington web site. Once logged on there is a 24/7 Messageing facility along with other facilities where you can report things like street lights not working. Barwick & Stoford Beat Manager & PCSO

What’s Been Happening Since the Last Edition? Quiz Night In the doldrums of the week between Christmas and the New Year the BSCC held a quiz night in the dining room at the Royal Oak. The surroundings were a lot more comfortable than the skittle alley, were we have historically held our quiz nights, so we have agreed that in future we will do quizzes on a Sunday night at The Royal Oak when the kitchen is not open and we can use the dining room again (please note those who might have been put off coming this time thinking it would be cold in the skittle alley). Many thanks to Tanya Lynam for compiling a great quiz. Race Night We would like to take this opportunity to thank the partici- pants of the Race Night on the 6th April. Although attend- ance was disappointing the atmosphere was good and en- thusiasm was high! It may have not been the Grand Nation- al, more like the Small Local but it was well worth the effort so congratulations to all that made the evening happen Easter Fun On Saturday 20th April we held an Easter Fun / Craft event at Whitcross Community Centre. Crafts on the day included, paint a plate, make a chick, pin the tail on the bunny and an Easter egg hunt. There was also a Decorate an Egg competition for people to bring along their home made entries. All the children that came really enjoyed themselves and the adults enjoyed tea and cake!

Barwick & Stoford Football Club Another season finishes and the club can be proud to finish fourth in the league and with a few outstanding performanc- es to look back on such as the away performance against a strong side and the dominance against Huish and the comeback against Penmill to name a few. As always the club is grateful to all the support it gets wheth- er it be from the die hard fans watching in all weather's, Grace Soughton for running the teas at our home matches, Dawn Higgins sorting the kits, Marilyn and Steve looking after us at the Oak and our club sponsors Jackie and Graham Lincoln at G2Metric. As the manager I'd also like to thank the players for the effort put in this year. This year saw a lot of new faces come in as well as the return of some former play- ers, so many in fact that we actually had too many some weeks which is a better problem to have than not enough! This along with some younger players from the village looking to play next season the club will be looking at running two sides for the 19/20 year, more details will be made available once dates for pre season get agreed. John Soughton, Team Manager 9

Friends In The Garden

Did you know that It has suggested that gardens and gardening can play an im- portant role in promoting good health? 1. It can help to reduce depression, loneliness, anxiety and stress. 2. It benefits various conditions including heart disease, cancer and obesity. 3. It may even help in alleviating symptoms of dementia. 4. It also improves a sense of personal achievement among young people with physical and learning disabilities. I know how I personally benefited from planning and setting up Geoff's Meadow in the weeks and months that followed his death. I remember how I spent those cold wintry days making nesting boxes and placing them in the hedgerow trees. A couple of our regular tea party guests have now started to come to Court House on their own at times, to help in the garden. The first just turned up while I was doing my Monday radio show, did some gardening and was gone by the time that I got home from the studio. This went on for a few months until one day I caught her leaving. Then another, a roast dinner guest this time, started to mow the lawns before he had his dinner and now he just turns up and gets on with things on his own. They both appreciate Geoff's garden and want to keep it looking nice in his memory. Neither of them met Geoff. So, I have decided that I will set up a proper gardening group to be called 'Friends In The Garden'. I will set aside half an acre of land in the lower meadow to be used as an allotment garden where we can grow vegetables and cut flowers that members of the group can use and to distribute to those who may benefit from some fresh food. Anyone is welcome to join. You don’t have to be fit and strong. You can just sit and watch others work if you want, or you can help make the tea. If you are interested in joining our group please get in touch with me by emailing [email protected] or phoning me, Paul on 01935 429096 and check out the Geranium Trust website www.geraniumtrust.org Paul Peters, Court House

The Barwick and Stoford Recreational Trust would like to take this opportunity to thank the community for their support over the past couple of years. Here is an update of work completed so far…. In February 2016 the Barwick and Stoford Recreational Trust was resurrected. We set out to raise funds to re-place the swing set which was in a poor condition and this was achieved in 2017. We then set out to purchase a climbing frame which would create a more challenging and inspiring environment. We achieved our goal with the help of the local community and their friends, early 2018. We would like to thank the Community & Co for buying our raffle tickets, for bag packing at supermarkets, for grant funding applications and for generally taking part in raising funds to improve the facilities for the local children. I would also like to thank the Trustees and Volunteers for their commitment - attend- ing meetings, organising events and also for maintaining and painting the fencing which surrounds the park area. The pub games as well as being enjoyable have also raised an average of £2000 per financial year. Between April 2018 and December 2018 ‘Play Your Cards Right’, Darts, Footie and the Barbeque raised a magnificent grand total of: £2,611.91 We are now adding some further equipment which will be installed in the summer and was chosen by some of our local children: A stand up see saw and a spinning dish. Keep an eye on the development of the Recreation Ground by following the Barwick and Stoford Recreational Trust on Facebook Many thanks Gill Gillott, Chair of the Trustees

The Brother I Never Knew Donald Marks died June 18th 1934, aged 3 months During a conversation with my Aunt in 2016 about her family and growing up in Barwick, she mentioned that my parents had actually had three boys, not just my brother and myself. An older brother my parents had never mentioned, who had died in 1934. To our surprise, my Aunt also managed to find a photo of my mother holding my brother in her arms, in the chapel at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London, where he died at just three months old. My parents brought Donald back to Barwick and he was laid to rest at St Mary Magdalene Church, where they had married a year before. Unfortunately, my Aunt died two years ago and her ashes were brought back to the UK from Australia. Celebrating her life brought us back into contact with my cousin and her family in Barwick, Ann and Terry Stephens. We mentioned Donald to them and Ann remembered visiting the grave having been told about it by her mum and dad, Len and Eva Murley, Len was brother to the baby’s mother. Ann often attend- ed and put flowers on the grave in her younger days and looked after it. We tried to locate the grave ourselves but had no luck. With Ann and Terrys help we turned to Carol Guppy for assistance and after examining the church records, we located the area of the grave within the church yard. Thankfully, Ann and Terry found the marble surround of my brother’s grave which was about ten inches un- der the ground. The memorial has been removed to ground level and Mr Guppy has restored it to its original state. We are most grateful to Chum & Carol Guppy who have made it possible for us to visit Donald after a very long length of time and remember him with the love my parents had shown my brother and I. Christian Aid Week 12th – 18th May Please help to support Christian Aid Week. Donations of pennies or pounds will literally save lives. We see on TV children with pinched faces, distended tummies and haunting eyes, dying from malnutrition, through no fault of their own. Contrast them with our children and grandchildren! Even though people in Britain are expe- riencing financial difficulties, we are still wealthy by international standards. Dona- tions, however small, add up to provide life-saving food and medicines. Last year we raised £181.50 in Barwick & Stoford – let’s beat it this year! If a Christian Aid envelope comes through your letterbox and you give a donation (gift-aided if possible if you pay tax, as we get an extra 25% from the tax-man – not from you), please return the envelope to: The Old Rectory, Church Lane, Barwick, or The Royal Oak, Stoford Green (box on restaurant bar). As a ‘thank you’, you are invited to a lunch in aid of the charity on Wednesday 22nd May, at the Old Rectory, 11.30 am – 2 pm. Choice of home-made soups, roll & butter, tea or coffee. All for £2 per person and if you haven’t handed in your envelope then you can bring it along..

View From The Vicarage

Happy Easter!!! Yes we can still say this because the Christian Easter season lasts 39 days (although that might not mean 39 Easter eggs!!) and in our church services we continue to say the Easter acclamation Alleluia! Christ is risen! As we re-light the Paschal candle. It’s not that we need reminding about Easter, but more that we are encouraged to continue to live as ‘Easter People’ with the life, joy and peace that only faith in God can give us. This is a call to live with a different focus whatever season we may be in. May is a month of transition- from spring towards summer, with trees in full leaf still fresh and green, from winter to summer sporting seasons and for the Christian year the transition from the Easter resurrection to the Ascension of Jesus (celebrated on 30th May) and looking towards the giving of the Holy Spirit to birth the worldwide church at Pentecost (June 9th). There is also the transition of people and at our annual meeting we have said a massive thank you to Victoria Garratt who has been a great Churchwarden for the past 4 years and a big hello to Nicky Gold who has taken on this role for the next 3 years. For me and my family too, we are preparing for the transition from St Mary Magda- lene after 6 years here to a new ministry post and home in Dorset in the summer. Whatever the season, a tree needs its roots to grow and as Christians we need prayer to keep us connected to God and to grow in everyday faith -so in the coming weeks we will also be joining in the global wave of prayer www.thykingdomcome.global. There will be prayer boxes in church and in the school so if you would like us to pray for a loved one or yourself just fill in a card! May you know God’s love and presence whatever season in life you are in. Every blessing Revd Gaenor

Church Roof Repair and Community Heritage Project

WE HAVE WON A GRANT. After many applications we have at last won a grant so that the church tower roof can be renovated. The church is a grade II* listed building and the tower roof is on Heritage ’s ‘at risk’ list, so we had to take action to preserve this heritage within our communi- ty. Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) have generously awarded us £36,800 towards the renovation costs and we are paying the balance of £29,300 mainly from the roof appeal fund. We would not have won the award without offering this significant contribution, so our thanks to all who have given their support and contributed to the roof appeal. Also a ‘thank you’ to all who play the National Lottery which ena- bles the HLF to support projects such as ours. The work started in April and will last three months. The contractor will strip off the 300-year old lead, repair the rotten roof timbers and re-lay with new lead, superim- posed by some of the old lead which has historically interesting graffiti. The flag pole and weathervane will also be reinstated. As a condition of the HLF grant, we have to improve the interest in ‘heritage’ in our community. This will be achieved primarily through the installation of ‘heritage boards’: one outside the church door and one on Stoford Green. The Recreational Trust has also decided to join us and produce one to go on Whitcross Recreation Ground. These boards will have pictorial descriptions of our villages’ history or dia- grams/maps, will be 1,500cm X 600cm, weatherproof and mounted on oak posts. An example of such boards can be seen at Ham Hill. The heritage project has re- ceived grants and support from B&S Parish Council and SSDC, and we would like to take this opportunity to thank them for this. We also plan to improve the church history booklet and website. If you want to help with the village’ history and heritage board design, please get in touch with Victoria Garratt at 01935 475882. The building work and heritage projects will culminate in a Heritage Day held at the church on Saturday 20th July. Facebook We have a new Facebook page – its called Mary Magdalene’s, Barwick & Stoford Heritage. Pictures and posts relating to parish heritage are welcome and its not just the church. Chris Story, Roof Repair Project Lead and Victoria Garratt 25

Comings and Goings! Unfortunately Revd Gaenor is leaving us at the end of July, moving to a new role. Gaenor has been with for 6 years and been instrumental in many changes particu- larly concerning outreach projects such as at Barwick & Stoford School and the Yeo- vil Show. We thank Gaenor for her work here with us and at Holy Trinity, Yeovil, and we wish her and her family all the best for their future. Luckily we have a Curate, Revd Dan Young, who will be elevated from ‘assistant’ to ‘boss’ for the duration of his curacy here. Then we will have the dreaded ‘interregnum’ until a replacement vicar can be recruited. There is also a change-over of Churchwarden. Victoria Garratt has done sterling service for the last four years including overseeing important changes such as hav- ing the church open every day and the third Thursday coffee mornings in Whitcross which are a great success. Additionally, she has been the lead on the Heritage side of our Heritage Lottery Fund grant for the repair of the tower roof. Although stand- ing down as Churchwarden, she is still around and giving support, especially to our new Churchwarden, Nicky Gold, to whom we give a very warm welcome. Nicky has many ideas and is keen for greater cooperation between the church and the villag- es. She works full time and often on a Sunday so we will be giving her all the sup- port we can to help her to get to grips with her new role. To contact Nicky you can call her on the phone (see number above) or use the church email ‘[email protected]’ which is monitored daily. Alternatively, speak to any church member who will pass on a message. Chris Story
