BSRA Entertainment Report for February 6, 2016 LONG FORM (for historical record) Entertainment Report for February 6, 2016 February 6, 2016. RollSign Archives. The RollSign Magazine archives hold over a century of unique Boston transit images, including many rarely seen views from RollSign Magazine through the years. Editor Nick Tomkavage presented a collection of images that have never been published, or were published decades ago. He started the presentation of RollSign archives with a note about photo crediting, as he made every effort to attribute photos to the proper people, and asked the audience for corrections in case of the proper attribution not being found in the archives The show began with a photo of Commonwealth Avenue and Chestnut Hill Avenue, with a 3 car train of Center Entrance cars #_ posing for a photo. These cars arrived in 1919 -1920 and were retired in 1946 - 1947; the photo is from after the fender guards were gone, approximately a year after arrival, but before 1926, when window guards were removed to keep children from using them as handholds to steal free rides. The original line from Lake Street into the subway went from Lake Street to Cleveland Circle to Washington Street to Huntington Avenue and then into the subway. The Commonwealth Avenue line was laid down in 1900, and as an early example of transit-oriented development, this was the driving element for the large scale development seen on Commonwealth Avenue today. These cars (#_?) were posed in a similar position as in the next photo, which showed them running on a Commonwealth short turn at Chestnut Hill Avenue in the 1930s -- Lake Street could not handle all of the Commonwealth Avenue service by itself, so the short-turn cars ran empty from Chestnut Hill Avenue to Reservoir to turn The next photo was in 1970 on Chestnut Hill Avenue of the Center Entrance Cars' replacement, the Wartime PCCs (#_ shown). -

PREFACE AND ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS In the past generation, the City of Boston been part of an historic urban renaissance in the United States. After years of serious decline, when businesses and population fled the city as racial and social problems festered, Boston has used its strategic location, priceless institutional assets, and grassroots know-how to offer a vital place to live, work, and enjoy cultural and community life. At a time when government is denigrated in the political discourse, Boston City Hall has developed programs and policies that have won acclaim for their pragmatism and effectiveness — including community policing, Main Streets business districts, nonprofit housing development, public-private partnerships in hospitals and community health centers, building-level reform of public schools, a small but significant growth in school choice, devel- opment of whole new neighborhoods and transit systems, and a renewal of citywide park sys- tems. These programs and strategies work because they create place-specific approaches to problems, where people are engaged in fixing their own communities and institutions. Mayor Thomas M. Menino, Police Commissioner Paul Evans, Schools Superintendent Thomas Pay- zant, the late Parks Commissioner Justine Liff, and others have provided very real leadership from City Hall — as have community leaders in all neighborhoods and even field of endeavor. One of the areas to experience the most striking renaissance is the area that we call the Heart of the City. -

Grogan [email protected] Massachusetts Institute of Technology Introduction The placement of storefronts is a difficult question on which many corporations spend a great amount of time, effort, and money. There is a careful interplay between environment, potential customers, other storefronts from the same franchise, and other storefronts for competing franchises. From the customer’s perspective, the convenience of storefronts, especially for “discretionary” products or services, is of the utmost importance. In fact, some franchises develop mobile phone applications to provide their customers with an easy way to find the nearest storefront.1 This project takes an in-depth view of the storefront placements of Dunkin’ Donuts and Starbucks, two competing franchises with strong presences in the Cambridge-Boston area. Both franchises purvey coffee, coffee drinks, light meals, and pastries and cater especially well to sleep-deprived graduate students. However, Dunkin’ Donuts typically puts more emphasis on take-out (convenience) customers looking to grab a quick coffee before class whereas Starbucks provides an environment conducive to socializing, meetings, writing theses, or studying over a longer duration. These differences in target customers may drive differences in the distribution of storefronts in the area. The goal of this project is to apply some of the concepts learned in ESD.86 on probabilistic modeling and to the real-world system of franchise storefronts and customers. The focus of the analysis is directed on the “convenience” of accessing storefronts, determined by the distance to the nearest location from a random customer. -

Comparisons with the 2006, 2010, and 2012–13 inventories are also included in this memorandum. In the spring and fall seasons between April 2017 and November 2018, Boston Region Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) staff inventoried MBTA, private, and town-operated parking facilities at 152 locations comprising 121 commuter rail stations, 27 rapid transit stations, two ferry terminals, and two express bus origin locations.1 Appendix A contains parking utilization rates for all of the parking lots that were inventoried. Information about parking fees and several maps that display inventoried data are found in Appendices B, C, D, and E. This memorandum has seven main sections and five appendices. Dorchester Reporter “The News and Values Around the Neighborhood” Volume 33 Issue 9 Thursday, February 26, 2015 50¢ Flood devastates Catholic Academy’s Columbia campus Hundreds of students displaced after pipe bursts on 4th floor By BiLL Forry eDitor A high-pressure sprinkler pipe burst inside a fourth-floor custodian’s closet in the Columbia Road campus of St. John Paul II Catholic Academy a week ago Monday night, sending a cascade of water throughout the former St. Margaret’s school building, destroying large sections of classroom space, and leaving the campus’s main building “uninhabitable.” Repair costs will likely run into the millions of dollars and take many months to complete. More immediately, the incident triggered a crisis for school officials and their church partners, who scrambled last week to relocate more than 350 students and faculty members as a return from February vacation loomed. By the weekend, a plan had been devised to keep the school’s youngest pupils housed on the Columbia Road campus in a newer annex building that was not damaged in the flooding. Students in grades 2-8, however, were scheduled to attend classes beginning yesterday (Wed., Feb. 25) at a nearby church-owned building on Dorchester Avenue just over the bridge Rev.
