These activities are intended to facilitate their welcome, integration and discovery of our beautiful region, its sites, its institutions and actors, while promoting the connection between International and local Geneva. The wish of our two institutions was to expand this programme of activities by including a "sport" section. Our region offers great opportunities in this field and there are several clubs and associations that host a wide variety of sport activities. The CAGI and the FpG are pleased to present this brochure which provides an overview of the important offer in term of sports clubs in Geneva and its surroundings. Sport is an essential factor of integration, facilitating exchanges, gatherings and links between International and local Geneva. The Domaine La Pastorale International Geneva Welcome Centre and the Fondation pour 106, route de Ferney Genève are pleased to contribute to this endeavor. PLAYER PERCEPTIONS AND BIOMECHANICAL RESPONSES TO TENNIS COURT SURFACES: THE IMPLICATIONS TO TECHNIQUE AND INJURY RISK Submitted by Chelsea Starbuck, to the University of Exeter as a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Sport and Health Sciences September 2014 This thesis is available for Library use on the understanding that it is copyright material and that no quotation from the thesis may be published without proper acknowledgement. I certify that all material in this thesis which is not my own work has been identified and that no material has previously been submitted and approved for the award of a degree by this or any other University. (Signature) ……………………………………………………………………………… 1 Abstract Elite tennis players are required to perform on a variety of tennis court surfaces which differ in mechanical characteristics, such as friction and hardness, influencing their performance and risk of injury. To understand the influence of surfaces on performance and injury risk, three studies were conducted to investigate tennis players’ perceptions and biomechanical responses during tennis-specific movements on different court surfaces. In study 1, tennis players perceptions of acrylic and clay courts were identified following a thematic inductive analysis of semi-structured interviews (n = 7) to develop of a series of visual analogue scales (VAS) to quantify perceptions during studies 2 and 3. Perceptions of predictability of the surface and players’ ability to slide and change direction emerged, in addition to anticipated perceptions of grip and hardness. Study 2 aimed to examine the influence of court surfaces and prior clay court experience on perceptions and biomechanical characteristics of tennis-specific skills.

  • The Permanent Neutrality Treaties
THE PERMANENTNEUTRALITY TREATIES The present European war has thrown into sharp relief the status of those smaller governments which, although in nowise shorn of attributes of sovereignty within their own borders, have nevertheless been placed by virtue of most solemn inter- national guarantees in a position of perpetual neutrality towards all other Powers. They are not to wage offensive warfare, nor, if the obligations resulting from these guarantees are faithfully observed, may their territories be in any degree the theatre of hostilities. While the chief examples of this peculiar status,- Belgium, Luxemburg and Switzerland,-are plainly, by reason of restricted area and population, in no condition to cope with the greater powers surrounding them, it is not alone their lack of size or strength that has marked them out for permanent neutrality or neutralization, but rather their essential relation to the map of Europe and the many conflicting interests innate in its geographical outlines which have seemed to make neces- sary their fixed withdrawal from plans of rivalry or territorial ambition and the creation in this manner of certain inter-spaces destined for peace whatever may be the fate of their more powerful neighbors. The precise conditions of such a neutrality are to be found in a long line of treaties and agreements comprising within their horizon a great variety of objects. For the purpose of the present examination, however, we shall lay out of detailed view all aspects of permanent neutrality save those attaching to the three governments just named since to consider the various phases of the subject would require much more space than that at the disposal of a single article.

By simultaneously enhancing performance and overall experience in athletic settings, one potentially reaches a higher propensity for flow, an optimal mental state of heightened experience and performance (Jackson, 1996; Kee & Wang, 2008). Mindfulness, specifically Langerian Mindfulness, has previously been shown to be useful in increasing one’s performance in a variety of settings (Langer et al., 2010). Given that Langerian Mindfulness has been shown to increase performance, this study intends to investigate whether Langerian Mindfulness can increase performance in an athletic setting, while also increasing one’s propensity for experiencing the flow state. So far, there are a limited number of interventions developed for athletes to enhance their performance through mindfulness techniques (Birrer, Rothlin & Morgan, 2012).

Ceded by treaty to France by the northern Italian kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia, these two mountainous border territories had long been culturally and geo-strategically in the French orbit. Unlike their counterparts in any other province of France, the inhabitants of the two territories were asked to approve or reject the annexation treaty, and thus their incorporation into France, in a plebiscite employing universal male suffrage.
