CANADA'S AIR WAR 1945 updated 21/04/08 January 1945 424 Sqn. and 433 Sqn. begin to re-equip with Lancaster B.I & B.III aircraft (RCAF Sqns.). 443 Sqn. begins to re-equip with Spitfire XIV and XIVe aircraft (RCAF Sqns.). Helicopter Training School established in England on Sikorsky Hoverfly I helicopters. One of these aircraft is transferred to the RCAF. An additional 16 PLUTO fuel pipelines are laid under the English Channel to points in France (Oxford). Japanese airstrip at Sandakan, Borneo, is put out of action by Allied bombing. Built with forced labour by some 3,600 Indonesian civilians and 2,400 Australian and British PoWs captured at Singapore (of which only some 1,900 were still alive at this time). It is decided to abandon the airfield. Between January and March the prisoners are force marched in groups to a new location 160 miles away, but most cannot complete the journey due to disease and malnutrition, and are killed by their guards. Only 6 Australian servicemen are found alive from this group at the end of the war, having escaped from the column, and only 3 of these survived to testify against their guards. All the remaining enlisted RAF prisoners of 205 Sqn., captured at Singapore and Indonesia, died in these death marches (Jardine, wikipedia). On the Russian front Soviet and Allied air forces (French, Czechoslovakian, Polish, etc, units flying under Soviet command) on their front with Germany total over 16,000 fighters, bombers, dive bombers and ground attack aircraft (Passingham & Klepacki). CHAPTER 1 8 THE LAST BATTLES : THE WAY HOM E Y mid-March the pessimism created by the slugging battles durin g B the winter in the Ardennes was swept away by a new convictio n among Allied military leaders that a swift end to the European war was not only possible but inevitable . Army and air force commanders vie d with each other to exert the maximum pressure before the final Germa n collapse. Although not free from political and prestige undertones, th e tactical improvisations made (especially by American army commanders ) within the general framework of General Eisenhower's three-phase strategy , resulted in hammer blows along the length of the River Rhine, against none of which could the Wehrmacht assemble adequate reserves . Despite Goebbels' propaganda call for the whole German nation to fight the invaders, despite preparations for demolition and scorched earth in th e Rhineland, and notwithstanding the productive genius of Speer, th e Germans had neither the men nor the material to prevent the surg e forward of the Allied armies in good campaigning weather. For their part Eisenhower 's armies were no longer faced with the logistics proble m which had halted them six months earlier before the Rhine, after thei r helter-skelter dash across France . Generals Bradley, Patton and Patc h were now assured of adequate independent strength to exploit any loca l break-through they might achieve without (as had happened at Arnhem ) seriously prejudicing each others' or Montgomery's own plans . In fact the balance of forces was such that each opportunist America n attack so preoccupied enemy reserves that the projected main drive b y General Montgomery across the lower Rhine at Wesel was materially assisted. -

The policy the Government settled on, however, was to contribute to the war effort primarily by making use of the naval and air forces at its disposal. Meanwhile, the Army would be given a low priority, barely having reached a size of 4,000 by the end of the war. This thesis looks at the decisions and factors that influenced the creation, organisation and employment of the Norwegian Army-in-exile. The questions it seeks to answer is why the Army remained numerically small in size, why it was barely used in combat operations and whether this was a continuation of Norwegian defence policy in the interwar years. -

“FLEXIBLE ENOUGH TO ADAPT” “Flexible Enough to Adapt”: British Airborne Forces’ Experience during Post Conflict Operations 1944- 1946 JOHN GREENACRE University of Suffolk Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT Either side of the end of the Second World War Britain’s airborne forces were increasingly employed in what today would be termed stabilisation operations. This paper examines the utility and experience of British airborne forces employed in Greece in 1944, Norway in 1945 and Java in 1946, and highlights common features across the three operations. This paper suggests characteristics and traits within airborne forces that enhanced their suitability for successfully contributing to complex stabilisation operations. Filling the Post Conflict Vacuum Brigadier C. Hilary V. Pritchard is not a name that regularly appears among the pantheon of British airborne commanders and yet he had a long and illustrious career. He was the original commander of 6th (Royal Welch) Parachute Battalion when it formed in August 1942 and as the commander of 2nd Parachute Brigade he took part in the invasion of Sicily, Operation HUSKY in July 1943. When his parent formation, 1st Airborne Division returned to England Pritchard’s 2nd (Independent) Parachute Brigade remained in Italy, fighting as conventional infantry around Orsogna, on the Sangro, on the Cassino front and mounting limited airborne operations to harass the German’s lines of communication. In August 1944 he commanded his brigade on Operation DRAGOON, the Allied invasion of the south of France. However, in November 1944 as his colleagues in 1st and 6th Airborne Divisions were recuperating from their experiences in Arnhem and Normandy respectively, Pritchard was in Athens, contemplating among other concerns, the state of the city’s drainage and sanitation. -

RIVENHALL - THE HISTORY OF AN ESSEX AIRFIELD by Bruce Stait THE CONSTRUCTION The airfield at Rivenhall was built during 1943 and was typical of the scores of scores of such installations, which were constructed after the advent of the U.S.A. in the war against Germany. In order to carry the war to the enemy the vast resources of U.S. industry were busily producing a heavy bomber force, while in England a crash programme of airfield building was begun. The sites chosen lay mainly in East Anglia, a reasonably flat county, without the hazard of high ground and in an agricultural region with few large centres of population. As a bonus it also offered the shortest route for aircraft attacking the German industrial centers situated in the Ruhr valley. Within the space of a few months, nineteen airfields were built in Essex, all of them in the Northern half of the county. Fields were leveled, drainage introduced, pipes laid and concrete poured. According to the R.A.F. official historian, Hilary St. George Saunders, each of the individual airfields required an average of 130,000 tons of concrete, ballast and cement and 50 miles of pipe and conduit. Rivenhall was laid out with the standard three runways of the period, one of 2,000 yards and two of 1,400 yards. In addition the airfield was equipped with two hangers and the necessary quarters for aircrew and ground crews, control tower and bomb dump. The airfield had only a short operational period, a little less than two years. -

NORSK FLYGING 1912 - 2012 ET SAMMENDRAG OM MARINENS BIDRAG TIL NORSK FLYHISTORIE 100-ÅRS JUBILEUM FOR NORSK FLYGING Mange dimensjoner og aktører I dag er det å fly nærmest blitt like selvfølgelig som å ta buss eller tog, og like billig. Flyene knytter Norge sammen, og JUBILEUMS PROGRAM Norge til Europa, på en rask og effektiv måte. I Forsvaret, der personell fortsatt i større grad enn vanlig, må jobbe atskilt fra familien, drar man også nytte av det store og rimelige flyt- ilbudet. Men Forsvaret har også sitt eget ”flyselskap”, Luft- forsvaret. Det er ikke noe ”billigselskap”, men det har likevel vært bred enighet om at det er verd prisen for å opprettholde et sterkt og moderne Luftforsvar. Begge disse dimensjonene, både den sivile og den militære luftfarten, kan i år feire sitt 100-årsjubileum. Utviklingen gjennom disse 100 årene har vært formidabel. Jubileet gir anledning til å belyse mange dimensjoner og det involverer derfor en lang rekke aktører. Fra Forsvarets side ønsker man å bidra til å gjøre jubileet til en folkefest. Forsvaret har naturlig nok fokus på den militære luftfartens historie. I tillegg ønsker man å informere om luftmaktens betydning og bevisstgjøre folk om at det fortsatt er behov for et sterkt Luftforsvar. Men også innenfor Forsvaret berører jubileet flere aktører. Hæren og Marinen hadde før annen verdenskrig hvert sitt flyvåpen, før dagens felles Luftforsvar ble etablert i 1944. Og fordi den avgjørende forsyningstjenesten, og i noen grad basedriften, i dag er organisert utenfor forsvarsgrenene, berører jubileet også Forsvarets Logistikkorganisasjon og Forsvarsbygg. Både den militære og den sivile luftfartens historie blir ivaretatt av Norsk Luftfartsmuseum i Bodø, i samarbeid med Luftfor- svarsmuseet og AVINOR museum. -
