Number 5 Bombing and Gunnery School Dafoe, Saskatchewan By Stephen Carthy Introduction and Acknowledgements Born as children of the Roaring Twenties and growing up as adolescents of the Dirty Thirties, they were men mostly in their late teens or early twenties when World War II broke out. They enlisted in the air forces of the British Commonwealth. Their reasons were as individual as they were, for some it was a way to escape the joblessness of the Thirties, for others it was patriotism and a chance for adventure, for some it was peer pressure, or it may have been a combination of any of those. After completing their basic training in their homeland they were sent to Canada to train in the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. Of course, the vast majority of these young men went on to serve in various theatres of war after completing their training in Canada. Sadly, too many of them never returned to their homes. The British Commonwealth Air Training Program had an extremely good safety record and 131,553 aircrew were trained. Most of the accidents that occurred were minor, but some were serious, and some fatal. 856 trainee airmen were either seriously injured or killed. At #5 Bombing and Gunnery School near Dafoe, Saskatchewan one hundred and twenty-three accidents were recorded, most were minor. Because those who were killed were not casualties of theatres of war their sacrifice is sometimes forgotten. Nevertheless, they gave their lives in the service of their countries. Like those who gave their lives overseas, those who died in training accidents in Canada left their families and homes voluntarily to serve their countries. -

Spring 2021 Bermuda, Here we Come by Stan Brygadyr It was a dark and stormy night, but we had to go to Bermuda, as a Royal Navy “A” Boat (submarine) was waiting for us to do Anti-Submarine (ASW) training. It was 25 Nov 1961, and my Commanding Officer (CO, VS-880 Sqn) was to lead a 4-plane formation of Tracker aircraft. I was his co-pilot (and thus the “lead navigator”). Navigating the 750nm to Bermuda, straight South of Halifax, was not normally a problem provided you stayed at 1000ft or below under Visual Flight Rules (VFR), in order to see the “wind-lanes” on the water surface and thus estimate the wind-speed and direction (this is “dead-reckoning” navigation). The Tracker was not equipped with any long- range navigation capability, only a low-frequency radio for airways beacons, and tactical air navigation (TACAN), for both airways and relative position to the carrier. The expected morning departure was stymied by thick fog at our home base of Shearwater NS, and it didn’t open up for an Instrument flight departure until late afternoon. Since we were now going for a night flight, and not VFR (so no formation!), we had to file an Oceanic flight plan individually, and we departed “stacked” at 9,8,7 and 6000 ft. Now came the challenge! The weather forecaster advised of a frontal system along the route, and winds at the start would be WSW at about 20kts. I therefore biased our heading slightly west of the required track; there was no ability once airborne to assess the wind direction or speed! After about 4 hours airborne, and being in severe thunderstorm activity which produced St Elmo’s Fire on our windscreen (which was a new experience for me and scary as hell!), we should have been able to receive the Bermuda Beacon or TACAN. -

Flyene knytter Norge sammen, og JUBILEUMS PROGRAM Norge til Europa, på en rask og effektiv måte. I Forsvaret, der personell fortsatt i større grad enn vanlig, må jobbe atskilt fra familien, drar man også nytte av det store og rimelige flyt- ilbudet. Men Forsvaret har også sitt eget ”flyselskap”, Luft- forsvaret. Det er ikke noe ”billigselskap”, men det har likevel vært bred enighet om at det er verd prisen for å opprettholde et sterkt og moderne Luftforsvar. Begge disse dimensjonene, både den sivile og den militære luftfarten, kan i år feire sitt 100-årsjubileum. Utviklingen gjennom disse 100 årene har vært formidabel. Jubileet gir anledning til å belyse mange dimensjoner og det involverer derfor en lang rekke aktører. Fra Forsvarets side ønsker man å bidra til å gjøre jubileet til en folkefest. Forsvaret har naturlig nok fokus på den militære luftfartens historie. I tillegg ønsker man å informere om luftmaktens betydning og bevisstgjøre folk om at det fortsatt er behov for et sterkt Luftforsvar. Men også innenfor Forsvaret berører jubileet flere aktører. Hæren og Marinen hadde før annen verdenskrig hvert sitt flyvåpen, før dagens felles Luftforsvar ble etablert i 1944. Og fordi den avgjørende forsyningstjenesten, og i noen grad basedriften, i dag er organisert utenfor forsvarsgrenene, berører jubileet også Forsvarets Logistikkorganisasjon og Forsvarsbygg. Både den militære og den sivile luftfartens historie blir ivaretatt av Norsk Luftfartsmuseum i Bodø, i samarbeid med Luftfor- svarsmuseet og AVINOR museum. -
