  • Number 5 Bombing and Gunnery School Dafoe, Saskatchewan
Number 5 Bombing and Gunnery School Dafoe, Saskatchewan By Stephen Carthy Introduction and Acknowledgements Born as children of the Roaring Twenties and growing up as adolescents of the Dirty Thirties, they were men mostly in their late teens or early twenties when World War II broke out. They enlisted in the air forces of the British Commonwealth. Their reasons were as individual as they were, for some it was a way to escape the joblessness of the Thirties, for others it was patriotism and a chance for adventure, for some it was peer pressure, or it may have been a combination of any of those. After completing their basic training in their homeland they were sent to Canada to train in the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. Of course, the vast majority of these young men went on to serve in various theatres of war after completing their training in Canada. Sadly, too many of them never returned to their homes. The British Commonwealth Air Training Program had an extremely good safety record and 131,553 aircrew were trained. Most of the accidents that occurred were minor, but some were serious, and some fatal. 856 trainee airmen were either seriously injured or killed. At #5 Bombing and Gunnery School near Dafoe, Saskatchewan one hundred and twenty-three accidents were recorded, most were minor. Because those who were killed were not casualties of theatres of war their sacrifice is sometimes forgotten. Nevertheless, they gave their lives in the service of their countries. Like those who gave their lives overseas, those who died in training accidents in Canada left their families and homes voluntarily to serve their countries.

  • The Maritime Air War Before Sunrise So Catching the Enemy Ships As They Turned Into the Approaches to the Anchorage
470 Part Three: The Maritime Air War before sunrise so catching the enemy ships as they turned into the approaches to the anchorage. ' 83 Drem was most appropriate for the open stretch of water between Stavanger and Kristiansund South, and was first used on 9 October 1944. Eight Beau fighters from No 404 armed with armour-piercing rockets, ten No 144 Squad ron Beaufighters, six armed with cannon and four with torpedoes, and eight Mosquitoes armed with cannon flew in the predawn darkness and 'in loose order' to the Norwegian coast. At o6rn hours a Vickers Warwick that had left Banff forty minutes before the first of the strike aircraft began dropping a pattern of marine markers, flame floats, and drift lights in a circle about six miles in diameter, some twenty miles off Skudenes Fjord. Assembling over it and forming into battle order, the wing then set course southeast, until a convoy of five merchant ships and six escorts was sighted in the faint dawn light twenty miles ahead, just off Egersund. With three Mosquitoes providing fighter cover, the attack began with cannon fire from six No 144 Beaufighters and the other five Mosquitoes, closely followed by the eight Beaufighter crews of 404 Squadron, who released their rockets at ranges varying from 700 to 450 yards and heights between 400 and 500 feet. The Canadians claimed thirty-four 'dry' and sixteen 'wet' hits, on both escorts and merchant ships. Then came the four Torbeaus, which managed at least two hits. Five minutes after engaging the enemy the entire wing was on its way back to Banff with only three aircraft damaged by Flak, leaving behind it two sinking ships, the German merchantman Rudolf Oldendorjf, of 1953 tons, and the escort UJ 17II, and a seriously damaged Norwegian Sarp, of 1116 tons.84 Since the weather throughout October was generally poor for flying, both in Scotland and off the Norwegian coast, operations on this scale could not be undertaken consistently.

  • Celebrating the Centennial of Naval Aviation in 1/72 Scale
Celebrating the Centennial of Naval Aviation in 1/72 Scale 2010 USN/USMC/USCG 1/72 Aircraft Kit Survey J. Michael McMurtrey IPMS-USA 1746 Carrollton, TX [email protected] As 2011 marks the centennial of U.S. naval aviation, aircraft modelers might be interested in this list of US naval aircraft — including those of the Marines and Coast Guard, as well as captured enemy aircraft tested by the US Navy — which are available as 1/72 scale kits. Why 1/72? There are far more kits of naval aircraft available in this scale than any other. Plus, it’s my favorite, in spite of advancing age and weakening eyes. This is an updated version of an article I prepared for the 75th Anniversary of US naval aviation and which was published in a 1986 issue of the old IPMS-USA Update. It’s amazing to compare the two and realize what developments have occurred, both in naval aeronautical technology and the scale modeling hobby, but especially the latter. My 1986 list included 168 specific aircraft types available in kit form from thirty- three manufacturers — some injected, some vacuum-formed — and only three conversion kits and no resin kits. Many of these names (Classic Plane, Contrails, Eagle’s Talon, Esci, Ertl, Formaplane, Frog, Griffin, Hawk, Matchbox, Monogram, Rareplane, Veeday, Victor 66) are no longer with us or have been absorbed by others. This update lists 345 aircraft types (including the original 168) from 192 different companies (including the original 33), many of which, especially the producers of resin kits, were not in existence in 1986, and some of which were unknown to me at the time.
