THE PALACE Theatre for the Performing Arts 3

Letter from the Executive Director

Welcome!

We are delighted to have you join us at The Palace during our 2018-2019 season! This winter we’re pleased to bring you some exciting entertainment!

Arts and Culture make good cities great and we are proud to have a facility like The Palace to present premier entertainment so close to home. While most people know The Palace for our outstanding shows, they may not know that The Palace is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization and we need your assistance to realize our mission.

Become a member and support the arts! Your donation is 100% tax deductible. Memberships come with valuable benefits such as access to ticket presales, priority seating, and a concierge phone line, as well as invitations to exclusive and exciting member receptions.

We’d like to extend our gratitude to our season sponsors: Co-Communications, SL Green, the Whittingham Family, UC Funds, and Harman — the “official sound of The Palace Theatre.” Our sponsors are the backbone of our theatre. Without their financial commitment and partnership we would not have the ability to bring sensational comedians, musicians, and children’s entertainment to our backyard that makes The Palace so unique. We greatly appreciate the continued support from these wonderful sponsors.

This winter we have a jam-packed schedule with entertainment for everyone. From music, comedy and family fun, we’ve got everything covered.

B. Underwater Bubble show returns for a colorful awe inspiring show that the entire family can enjoy on March 2nd while our playtime series continues with Presto Pete & Incredulous Chris on March 3rd and Story Pirates on March 24th.

Also coming in March, two great bands you won’t want to miss! NEEDTOBREATHE brings their acoustic tour to The Palace on March 16th and on March 28th for KING AND COUNTRY hits the stage. The Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award Winner Kris Kristofferson will be playing his classic hits on April 10th.

The Palace also pays tribute to some of your favorite artists. Mike DelGuidice & Big Shot celebrate the music of Billy Joel on March 1st while Kashmir brings the music of Led Zeppelin back to life on March 22nd.

Mike DelGuidice & Big Shot Friday, March 1 | 8:00pm

After 18 years of playing Billy Joel’s music in his band Big Shot, Mike DelGuidice now lives a dream come true. In October of 2013, Billy Joel heard Mike sing, and then hired him on the spot to join his band full time. And now you can see Mike on tour with Billy Joel all over the U.S. & world in major arenas and stadiums including every month at the iconic Madison Square Garden.

On Billy Joel’s recent SiriusXM Channel you can hear Billy talking about Mike and how much he sounds just like him – “That’s me...I know my voice...That’s a tape...but it was this guy... Mike DelGuidice.” – Billy Joel

Mike’s extraordinary band BIG SHOT include other current long time legendary members of Billy Joel’s touring band: Tommy Byrnes (guitar) and Chuck Burgi (drums). The band is well known and respected for providing a show of Billy Joel’s song book packed with hit after chart- topping hit, (and some cuts for the die hard Billy Joel fan) in a high energy, interactive stage performance. On any given night they will also astonish you with renditions of songs by Elton John, Paul McCartney, The Beatles, Journey, and others.

The other members of the band — John Scarpulla, Carmine Giglio, and Nick Dimichino — also have impressive resumes: working, recording and touring with Hall & Oats, Michael Bolton, Diana Ross, LeAnn Rimes, Nine Days, Huey Lewis, Tower of Power, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, a bunch of Broadway shows including Billy Joel’s ‘Movin Out’ and a lot more.

B. Underwater Bubble Show Saturday, March 2 | 7:00pm

This is a story about each and everyone’s life. We all know life can be gray or colorful. Don’t worry – this time it is going to be very colorful!

After another long day – as always, filled with things to do, meetings, and deadlines to be met – Mr. B finds himself transported, as if by magic, to a special, colorful, happy place called Bubblelandia. Bubblelandia is a place in which to linger, to dream, to listen, to watch, to savor, and to marvel, but, above all, a place to daydream. And it is here on this planet; it is inside us, it is the ocean of our soul.

To find it you just need to wake up! The “inhabitants” of Bubblelandia–seahorses, dragonfish, starfish, mermaids, clownfish and others–will carry Mr. B along his imaginary journey in this beautiful underwater world where fantasy becomes reality, and you are invited to follow him. But be careful!

You will not need an oxygen tank to breathe; just let your mind run wild, open your heart, and relieve the everyday stress! Suddenly, millions of bubbles of all shapes and colors, along with the foam of waves and other surprises, will immediately swallow and transport you into this parallel universe of joy and freedom.

Are you afraid of the touch of a giant jellyfish, or the huge whale that will appear next to you? Don’t worry, because Mr. B will take you by the hand through this imaginary journey and, in the end, you will feel lighter, freer, happier. This experience will change you, too, just as it changed Mr. B.

Shen Yun Friday, March 29 | 7:30pm Saturday, March 30 | 2:00pm and 7:30pm Sunday, March 31 | 1:00pm

Take an enlightening journey through 5,000 years!

SHEN YUN’S unique artistic vision expands theatrical experience into a multi- dimensional, inspiring journey through one of humanity’s greatest treasures—the five millennia of traditional Chinese culture.

This epic production immerses you in stories reaching back to the most distant past. You’ll explore realms even beyond our visible world. Featuring one of the world’s oldest art forms—classical Chinese dance—along with patented scenographical effects and all-original orchestral works, Shen Yun opens a portal to a civilization of enchanting beauty and enlightening wisdom. Enter a world where philosophers and poets alike sought harmony with the Dao, or “Way,” of the universe. Where maidens danced with ethereal grace and generals fought with explosive athleticism. Where timeless tales of valor and virtue were born. Where heaven and earth intersected, and miracles came into being.

“Absolutely the NO. 1 SHOW in the world — no other company or any style can match this.”— Kenn Wells, former lead dancer of the English National Ballet

“Five stars! I have reviewed about 4,000 shows since 1942, none can compare to what I saw tonight.”— Richard Connema, Broadway critic

“There is a massive power in this that can embrace the world. It brings great hope… It is truly a touch of heaven.”— Daniel Herman, Minister of Culture of the Czech Republic

“I was uplifted, I was filled with hope... The world is a better place because of Shen Yun.”— Richard Swett, former U.S. Congressman

“Everything was larger than life. It’s one of the happiest evenings of my life. All my cares just disappeared, and I became one hundred percent positive thinking.”— Nancy Brock, former actress, associate producer

“The ancient Chinese wisdom will benefitt the whole world.”—Ted Kavanau, founding senior producer of CNN headline news

“I encourage everyone to see and all of us to learn from.”— Donna Karan, fashion designer

“Go see it to believe it, because otherwise, you are going to miss the most important thing in your life.”— Joe Heard, former White House photographer who watched Shen Yun 5 times.

“Awe-Inspiring Sensation!” — ABC

“A must-See!” — Broadway World

About Shen Yun: Through the universal language of music and dance, Shen Yun weaves a wondrous tapestry of heavenly realms, ancient legends, and modern heroic tales, taking you on a journey through 5,000 years of authentic Chinese culture. Its stunning beauty, purity, and tremendous energy leave audiences greatly uplifted and deeply inspired. 18 www.PalaceStamford.org Show Information

Kris Kristofferson & The Strangers Wednesday, April 10 | 8:00pm

His renown as a songwriter triggered Kristofferson’s successful career as a performer and that, in turn, brought him to the attention of Hollywood, leading to his flourishing career as a film actor. Kristofferson has acted in more than 70 films. In 1977 he won a Golden Globe for Best Actor in “A Star Is Born.” He’s appeared in cult favorites including the “Blade” trilogy, “Lone Star,” “A Soldier’s Daughter Never Cries,” “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore,” “Blume In Love,” “Cisco Pike,” and “Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid.” Recent films include “Fast Food Nation,” “Dreamer: Inspired By A True Story,” “The Jacket,” “Silver City,” “He’s Just Not That Into You,” and “Dolphin Tale.”

Heralded as an artist’s artist, the three-time GRAMMY winner has recorded 30 albums, including three with pals Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings as part of the Highwaymen. Kristofferson has spent three decades performing concerts all over the world, in most recent years in a solo acoustic setting, which puts the focus on the songs. “There’s an honesty in the sparseness. It feels like direct communication to the listener,” he says. “I still have more fun when I’m with the band, but being alone is freer, somehow. It’s like being an old blues guy, just completely stripped away.”

THE PALACE Theatre for the Performing Arts 19 Show Information

David Sedaris Thursday, April 11 | 7:30pm

Join best-selling author and NPR contributor, David Sedaris for an evening featuring all-new stories, an audience Q&A, and a book signing at The Palace Theatre. With sardonic wit and incisive social critiques, Mr. Sedaris has become one of America’s pre-eminent humor writers. The great skill with which he slices through cultural euphemisms and political correctness proves that Sedaris is a master of satire and one of the most observant writers addressing the human condition today. David Sedaris returns to the road following the release of his most deeply personal and darkly hilarious collection, Calypso.

Sedaris sets his formidable powers of observation toward middle age and mortality. Make no mistake: these stories are very, very funny-it’s a book that can make you laugh ’til you snort, the way only family can. Sedaris’s powers of observation have never been sharper, and his ability to shock readers into laughter unparalleled. But much of the comedy here is born out of that vertiginous moment when your own body betrays you and you realize that the story of your life is made up of more past than future.

If you love David Sedaris’s cheerfully misanthropic stories, you might think you know what you’re getting into at his live readings. You’d be wrong. To see him read his own work on stage allows his autobiographical narrative to reveal a uniquely personal narrative that will keep you laughing throughout the evening. Don’t miss this event! London Philharmonic Orchestra Tuesday, April 16 | 8:00pm

What if silence had a sound? That’s how Mahler begins his First Symphony; with a sound so still and deep that you feel it rather than hear it. And gradually – from bird calls and folksongs, daydreams and trumpet calls – he creates a wondrous new musical world. By turns playful and tragic, epic and intimate, it’s become one of the best-loved of 19th-century symphonies, just as Sibelius’s Violin Concerto has come to embody the soul of the Finnish nation. With Edward Gardner conducting the renowned London Philharmonic Orchestra, and the superb James Ehnes on violin, you’ll hear new poetry in even the most familiar music.
