The Christmas spirit is needed now more than ever so for KING & COUNTRY has partnered with The Salvation Army for operation Rescue Christmas, a national toy drive! Concertgoers are asked to bring new, unwrapped toys that will be collected by representatives from the local Salvation Army and distributed to families struggling during the holiday season. The Salvation Army is the largest provider of social services in the country. Due to the impact of COVID-19, they may need to serve up to 155% more people this year with Christmas assistance. Visit Rescue Christmas to learn more. “It’s been a difficult year for so many,” said Joel Smallbone of for KING & COUNTRY. “Now more than ever, we felt compelled to get out on the road in a safe and socially distanced way to spread the joy and spirit of Christmas in the best way we know – by sharing a night of music celebrating the greatest hope the world has ever known. But we didn’t want the night to end after the last car leaves the parking lot, so we chose to partner with The Salvation Army and their Rescue Christmas Campaign – to bring toys to families unable to afford them.” “This is a cause that’s dear to us,” added Smallbone. “We came to this country from Australia and were headed for bean burritos and gifts from the dollar shop before an act of kindness from a first-grade school class gave us a Christmas that we will never forget. They provided our family with food and toys to celebrate the holidays and for that reason we are so proud and honored to be partnering with the Salvation Army, to share a bit of joy with others that might be facing the same fate this Christmas.” “We are so grateful to have the support of for KING & COUNTRY and their fans,” said Commissioner Kenneth G. Hodder, National Commander of The Salvation Army. “The toys collected at their upcoming concerts will help make the holidays brighter for families and raise awareness of the unprecedented need that many are facing this holiday season.” “We are very excited to have a Christian band back at the Findlay Toyota Center,” said Sheila Anderson, Spectra Marketing Manager for the Findlay Toyota Center. “Even though we have had to drastically rethink everything about our live events, we are still working very hard to bring great entertainment that the community will love!” About for KING & COUNTRY - Four-time GRAMMY® award-winning Australian duo for KING & COUNTRY, comprised of brothers Joel & Luke Smallbone, is currently nominated for two Billboard awards and six Dove awards. Praise Music has always been a big part of my life. As a child, I loved to sing. When I was 12, I was so excited to receive a stereo for my birthday. At 16, I discovered the joy of driving my car and listening to music that matched my mood. As an adult, I have learned to love all types of music: hymns, contemporary praise, show tunes, and top 40, to name a few. Music frequently is playing in the background at my house and in my offce. I think my love of music is connected to how it speaks to us. It can help us express thoughts and emotions when words do not seem to work. It can make us laugh and energize us, and it can remind us of important truths about our relationship with Jesus Christ. Many songs reinforce the Good News we encounter in scripture. They sometimes spark within us a new understanding of our identity in Christ. Music connects to people of all ages and brings us together. These things inspired us to create devotions centered around song and scripture. Over the next few weeks, we will listen to contemporary Christian music, hymns, and songs from Roswell Kids. We will explore their connections to scripture and dive deeper into how they can help shape and form our faith. We hope these devotions will help your family create space in your days to focus on God, to refect on how God is speaking, and to engage in activities that help reinforce the messages. Please know you are in our prayers and that we miss your families.

  • Stylistic Evolution of Jazz Drummer Ed Blackwell: the Cultural Intersection of New Orleans and West Africa
STYLISTIC EVOLUTION OF JAZZ DRUMMER ED BLACKWELL: THE CULTURAL INTERSECTION OF NEW ORLEANS AND WEST AFRICA David J. Schmalenberger Research Project submitted to the College of Creative Arts at West Virginia University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts in Percussion/World Music Philip Faini, Chair Russell Dean, Ph.D. David Taddie, Ph.D. Christopher Wilkinson, Ph.D. Paschal Younge, Ed.D. Division of Music Morgantown, West Virginia 2000 Keywords: Jazz, Drumset, Blackwell, New Orleans Copyright 2000 David J. Schmalenberger ABSTRACT Stylistic Evolution of Jazz Drummer Ed Blackwell: The Cultural Intersection of New Orleans and West Africa David J. Schmalenberger The two primary functions of a jazz drummer are to maintain a consistent pulse and to support the soloists within the musical group. Throughout the twentieth century, jazz drummers have found creative ways to fulfill or challenge these roles. In the case of Bebop, for example, pioneers Kenny Clarke and Max Roach forged a new drumming style in the 1940’s that was markedly more independent technically, as well as more lyrical in both time-keeping and soloing. The stylistic innovations of Clarke and Roach also helped foster a new attitude: the acceptance of drummers as thoughtful, sensitive musical artists. These developments paved the way for the next generation of jazz drummers, one that would further challenge conventional musical roles in the post-Hard Bop era. One of Max Roach’s most faithful disciples was the New Orleans-born drummer Edward Joseph “Boogie” Blackwell (1929-1992). Ed Blackwell’s playing style at the beginning of his career in the late 1940’s was predominantly influenced by Bebop and the drumming vocabulary of Max Roach.

With its origins dating back to the late 1960s, CCM resembles musical styles of popular-secular culture while retaining fundamental Christian values in lyrical content. This historical perspective of CCM marketing strategies, CCM music television, CCM and secular music, arts worlds within CCM, and the science of storytelling in CCM aims to provide readers with the context and understanding of the significant role that CCM plays in modern-day evangelism.

No longer is “digital” the parsley on the marketing plate at a fancy dinner, an afterthought, or a cool extra to add some sizzle to a marketing plan. Digital is now the main course of the marketing meal — the connective strategy that pulls all the elements of an integrated marketing program together, ensuring that all messaging and communications strategies are effective at reaching the customer. Yet in many organizations, the digital marketing mix is still handled arbitrarily, after the fact, or managed by a junior member of the team who has some personal familiarity or a willingness to learn how to work in the digital medium. This book is designed to bring the educated layperson — the typical marketer or business professional familiar with the topic — to a point where digital methods become an essential element of their integrated marketing strategy from the onset.

  • Visual Representations of Christianity in Christian Music Videos
Visual Representations of Christianity in Christian Music Videos ANDREAS HÄGER Åbo Akademi University Abstract This article discusses Christian rock videos. Videos from a collection entitled Wow Hits 2002: the year’s top Christian music videos are used as examples. The title of the collection declares that the videos are “Christian”, and the question asked in the article is how this quality may be seen in the videos. How may the videos be seen as visual representations of Christianity? Using a semiotic framework, two possible types of such representations of Christianity in the videos are discussed. These are references to traditional Christian imagery; and the style and appearance of the artists. This article discusses Christian rock videos as an example of the interaction between religion and popular culture. The genre of “contemporary Christian music”, or Christian rock, by being rock music as well as an expression of Christianity, stands with one foot in institutional (often evangelical) Chris tianity and the other in the secular commercial music industry. This article studies how this ambiguous position is manifested in Christian rock videos. Examples will be taken from the Christian hit video collection Wow hits 2002: the year’s top Christian music videos. © The Finnish Society for the Study of Religion Temenos Vol. 41 No. 2 (2005), 251–274 252 ANDREAS HÄGER The research context for the article is constituted by two overlapping fields of research: sociology of religion and the study of religion and popu lar culture. The view here is that these fields are connected, as the relation between religion and popular culture is understood as an example of the overarching topic of the sociology of religion: the role of religion in con temporary society.
