Murdough A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2006 Committee: Angela Nelson, Advisor Marilyn Motz Jeremy Wallach ii ABSTRACT Angela Nelson, Advisor In 1985-86, DC Comics launched an extensive campaign to revamp and revise its most important superhero characters for a new era. In many cases, this involved streamlining, retouching, or completely overhauling the characters’ fictional back-stories, while similarly renovating the shared fictional context in which their adventures take place, “the DC Universe.” To accomplish this act of revisionist history, DC resorted to a text-based performative gesture, Crisis on Infinite Earths. This thesis analyzes the impact of this singular text and the phenomena it inspired on the comic-book industry and the DC Comics fan community. The first chapter explains the nature and importance of the convention of “continuity” (i.e., intertextual diegetic storytelling, unfolding progressively over time) in superhero comics, identifying superhero fans’ attachment to continuity as a source of reading pleasure and cultural expressivity as the key factor informing the creation of the Crisis on Infinite Earths text. The second chapter consists of an eschatological reading of the text itself, in which it is argued that Crisis on Infinite Earths combines self-reflexive metafiction with the ideologically inflected symbolic language of apocalypse myth to provide DC Comics fans with a textual "rite of transition," to win their acceptance for DC’s mid-1980s project of self- rehistoricization and renewal.

As the fifth installment in the Chixtape series, Tory continues his trend of flipping old-school and iconic R&B samples. For those keeping score at home, this means bringing Chixtape 5 to DSPs is logistically incredible and likely came with a hefty price tag. Listening to Chixtape 5 , hearing the samples (T-Pain’s “I’m Sprung,” Pretty Ricky’s “Your Body,” and many more), and being sucked into a vortex of nostalgia, we at DJBooth had to ask: How, on God’s green earth, did Tory Lanez’ team clear all the samples on this record? And once they cleared the samples, what did the bill look like? In the spirit of journalism, we decided to find out. At the first competition in Carrollton they Middle School Football had a high music score but a low marching score and Page 2: Clubs and Activities flipped the scores in Cameron. On October 26th they Art Club had a competition in Maryville where they placed Elementary News second in their class 2A, only four points away from Blast Off Into the School Year first. The band had the third-highest music score over all the bands that performed. The band was very Stacking It Up excited to beat some very good bands for their last Books for First Grade marching competition of the year and are getting Character Assembly ready for concert season. Page 3: Current Events Florida Man Drumline this year had a good season. They Hong Kong Protests only had two competitions compared to the three that Creative Minds the whole band had.     Praise Music has always been a big part of my life. As a child, I loved to sing. When I was 12, I was so excited to receive a stereo for my birthday. At 16, I discovered the joy of driving my car and listening to music that matched my mood. As an adult, I have learned to love all types of music: hymns, contemporary praise, show tunes, and top 40, to name a few. Music frequently is playing in the background at my house and in my offce. I think my love of music is connected to how it speaks to us. It can help us express thoughts and emotions when words do not seem to work. It can make us laugh and energize us, and it can remind us of important truths about our relationship with Jesus Christ. Many songs reinforce the Good News we encounter in scripture. They sometimes spark within us a new understanding of our identity in Christ. Music connects to people of all ages and brings us together. These things inspired us to create devotions centered around song and scripture. Over the next few weeks, we will listen to contemporary Christian music, hymns, and songs from Roswell Kids. We will explore their connections to scripture and dive deeper into how they can help shape and form our faith. The figure of the “metahuman,” the human with superpowers and purpose, embodies the transfigured nerd whose defects—intellect, swarm-behavior, abnormality, flux, and love of machines—become virtues of survival in the twenty-first century. The conflict among capitalism, fascism, and communism, which drove the Cold War and its immediate aftermath, also drove the Golden and Silver Ages of Comics. In the era of planetary emergency, these forces reconfigure themselves as different versions of world-destruction. The metahuman also signifies going “beyond” these economic and political systems into orders that preserve democracy without destroying the biosphere. Therefore, the styles of metahuman figuration represent an appeal to tradition and a technique of transformation. I call these strategies the iconic style and metamorphic style. The iconic style, more typical of DC Comics, makes the hero an icon of virtue, and metahuman powers manifest as visible signs: the “S” of Superman, the tiara and golden lasso of Wonder Woman.
