The growth of Leonese, a conservative western dialect of old Spanish, was eclipsed by Castilian whose innovation broke the primitive union which had previously tied the Romance dialects of the west to those of the east. The 12th to the 16th centuries was the transition period during which the range of the early dialects was much reduced, and the political and literary domination of Castilian was accomplished. Despite the acceptance of this new literary dialect in western Spain, Leonese was still the popular language there during much of that period. 1.2 Because Leonese was short-lived as a literary language, there is not a large body of material from which a detailed description of the dialect may be made. Evidence for it is found in the old fueros, in notarial documents of ordinary business and legal transactions, and in a few literary works, including the Madrid or Osuna (0) manuscript of the Libro de Alexandre. Considering this limited documentation, the history of old Leonese has been fairly well described. In his study of the origins of Spanish, Menendez Pidal outlined the evolution of Leonese from its Vulgar Latin beginnings to its medieval development.^- Previously Gessner had presented aspects of old Leonese which he had found in the Libro de Alexandre, Fuero Juzgo, and a number of 2 3 notarial documents. Morel-Fatio discussed more of 4 the dialectal features in OAlex; Hanssen summarized 5 verb conjugations in Leonese and referred to other aspects of the western dialect in his historical grammar. Chapter 5 Variation in Romance Diego Pescarini and Michele Loporcaro 5.1 Introduction This chapter sets out to show how the study of linguistic variation across closely related languages can fuel research questions and provide a fertile testbed for linguistic theory. We will present two case studies in structural variation – subject clitics and (perfective) auxiliation – and show how a comparative view of these phenomena is best suited to providing a satisfactory account for them, and how such a comparative account bears on a number of theoretical issues ranging from (rather trivially) the modeling of variation to the definition of wordhood, the inventory of parts of speech, and the division of labour between syntax and morphology. 5.2 Systematic variation: the case of subject clitics French, northern Italian Dialects, Ladin, and Romansh are characterized by the presence, with variable degrees of obligatoriness, of clitic elements stemming from Latin nominative personal pronouns.

The following paper is concerned with the sound changes or phonemic changes that occur during the word formation process in Magahi. Magahi is an Indo- Aryan Language spoken in eastern parts of Bihar and also in some parts of Jharkhand and West Bengal. The term Morphophonology refers to the interaction of word formation with the sound systems of a language. The paper finds out the phonetic rules interacting with the morphology of lexicons of Magahi. The observations shows that he most frequent morphophonological process are Sandhi, assimilation, Metathesis and Epenthesis.     PRESS DOSSIER VÍA DE LA PLATA ROUTE 2017 THE VÍA DE LA PLATA ROUTE The building of a Roman road commenced in the 1st century AD, exploiting the presence of a natural corridor in the west of the Iberian Peninsula which was to become one of its major road links over time. Besides linking up some of the major cities on the peninsula, the route also served to spread Roman culture. Moreover, the road was provided from the start with infrastructures that have nowadays become important remains marking its path. The Via de la Plata was second only in importance on the Iberian Peninsula to the Via Augusta. Work commenced under the consul Quintus Servilius Caepio, but it was the Emperor Augustus who really pushed forward its construction. Work continued under the emperor Tiberius, while the Hispanic emperors Trajan and Hadrian were the ones who would give it its definitive form. During the Middle Ages, it facilitated the Arab invasion northward, while also enabling the advance of the re-conquering Christian troops, and became an indisputable transport axis linking north and south. It was also at this time when it took on its present-day name, the Via de la Plata, which derives from the Arabic term balath or BaLaTa , meaning pavement or paved road. It is nowadays one of the most important and attractive itineraries in Europe, located to the west of the Iberian Peninsula. The Vía de la Plata route is based along an old communication axis of the Spanish West. Today, it is a magnificent and varied route possessing several World Heritage Sites and representing a top-level cultural and tourism potential in both the Iberian Peninsula and the European Union.

Eslema receives minor funding from the Spanish government, which is fundamental for basic issues such as equipment acquisition. However, it is insufficient for hiring researchers for a reasonable period of time. The scarcity of funding prompted us to look for much needed resources in entities with no institutional relation to the project, such as publishing companies and radio stations. In addition, we have started collaborations with external research groups. We are for example initiating a project devoted to developing a wiki-based platform, to be used by the community of Asturian speakers, for loading and annotating texts in Eslema. That will benefit both our project, allowing to enlarge the corpus at a minimum cost, and the Asturian community, causing a stronger presence of Asturian in information technologies and, as a consequence, boosting the confidence of speakers in their language, which will hopefully contribute to slow down the serious process of substitution it is currently undergoing. 1.     Welcome to the Town of Ledesma, one of the most relevant Historic Sites of Salamanca, which is surrounded by a solemn atmosphere, steeped in centuries of history. Its walls have fostered the creation of a number of palaces and dwellings beautifully by their inhabitants, all the better to look Modern Times in the eye and to honour the visitor. To disseminate this, we have created the Interpretation Centre of the History of Ledesma BLETISA, which looks after and maintains an Urban Route, carefully traced on its streets. A tour embellished by a few mini-stories hidden in its magnificent heritage, which will lead us on a unique walk where every day and every hour seem ever more lovely. And with the purpose of enabling this to be understood and enjoyed by a wider public, the Interpretation Centre provides the possibility of doing the Urban Route in English or French, via QR codes. THE PLAZA DE LA FORTALEZA SQUARE Where history strolls on Sunday afternoons... Talking about a medieval fortress immediately brings to mind the lack of security for the population and the authority and power of the feudal estates at the time. The first to hold that power were the second-born princes in the Castille crown, until the King bestowed the county of Ledesma to the family of his favourite, Don Beltrán de la Cueva. From then onwards and until the 19th century, the counts would govern Ledesma and its territory from the court, keeping an epistolary relationship with the local representatives, who were in charge of administering justice and collecting taxes in their name.
