Sponsorship Opportunities 2019 Canadian Championship Britannia Club • • Aug 14 - 20 The Event The Britannia in Ottawa, Ontario will host the 2019 Canadian Optimist Championship from August 14th to 20th. Over 100 Opti sailors aged 8 to 15 will compete for the national title and the right to represent in international competition. This national event not only brings racers together from across the country, but attracts international competitors as well.

The Boat - The Optimist The Optimist is a single-handed one-design ideal for children learning to sail, but also allows them to test their skills against the best in the world racing at all levels, up to the World Championships. Sailed in over 120 countries by over 300,000 young people, it is the only dinghy approved by the International Federation (ISAF) exclusively for sailors under 16. It is the class in which most world-class and Olympic sailors begin their sailing careers.

Host Club The Britannia Yacht Club has enthusiastic members who appreciate the value of hosting major events and have the experience to pull them off. Its location on Lac Deschenes in Ottawa provides top-notch club amenities and access to the Nation’s Capital. The Club is committed to the role Optis play in developing confidence, sailing skills and sportsmanship as demonstrated by its strong Opti Race Team program. The club and its membership will deliver a national championship that draws sailors from across the country and provides opti sailors from this region an opportunity to experience a regatta of this magnitude.

Stats & FAQS • The club has had a Junior Learn to Sail program since 1955 and our members believe strongly in youth sailing. • The BYC Opti race team started in 2009 with 5 eager sailors. We now have a team of 20 sailors. This is the largest team in Central Canada • The Canadian Optimist Championship is among the most prestigious and significant of Canadian sailing events and is celebrating its 33rd year. • Top Canadian finishers are offered a chance to represent Canada in the 2020 Optimist World Championship, the European Championship, and the North American Championship. • Sailing teaches young people independence, decision making, self-reliance and responsibility which builds confidence and self- esteem. About BYC Incorporated in 1887, the Britannia Yacht Club is among the oldest yacht clubs in Canada. The goal of the BYC is to encourage and enhance the sport of sailing among members and within the community. Home to almost 1,000 members the BYC is proud to offer instructional programs and on-water activities for all ages, with their “Learn to Sail” program and active racing schedule.

Note on Fleet Sponsorship Opti sailors race in four age based feets. The green feet are the beginners and are mixed ages. They race on their own course during the event. Sailors are not ranked but every sailor receives a participation medal. They are the future! The white feet are age 10 and under, Blue feet are aged 10 - 12, and the red feet are 13 - 15. These feets race together but are ranked within their feet.
