3 3 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Philip Johnson, NCTA President

That was the year that was! Welcome all to the NCTA 2020 Yearbook. The past year has been like no other in living memory – at least for most of us. I hope that you and your families have stayed healthy and happy, and I offer my condolences to those who have lost a loved one. Our plans to celebrate the NCTA’s 100th Anniversary fell by the wayside, as did so many celebrations. I would like to commend the tennis community for your responsible and creative responses to the many challenges posed by the pandemic. As far as we are aware, there are zero cases where a Covid-19 infection resulted from a tennis-related activity within our region. I think we all appreciate that playing tennis is a very, very low risk activity with respect to the virus, and the NCTA continues to advise local and provincial politicians to that effect. Nonetheless, the diligent response of our tennis clubs and players contributed significantly to our success. Thank you very much everyone. The restrictions that were imposed on tennis activities were measured, and for that I would like to thank Kelly Bean, the ’s contact for the tennis community. Kelly worked diligently as the voice for tennis on many occasions this year. The fact that our seasonal clubs lost little more than a week of the playing time at the start of the season is testimony to Kelly’s efforts. It is worth noting that Ottawa tennis players often had many more options than players in other parts of , including league play, doubles and tournaments. Probably the hardest hit part of our community was the competitive junior program. In recent years, theNCTA and local clubs have offered junior tournaments most weekends during the summer, but only ahandful of junior events took place in 2020. Even when tournament play was permitted, a combination ofthe restrictions applied and the willingness of clubs to accept visitors into their facilities meant there was a minimal summer program. The loss of the Ottawa Athletic Club has had a major impact on all members of the tennis community, but particularly juniors. The OAC’s indoor courts were the hub of competitive winter tennis for juniors in Ottawa. Sadly, at the time of writing, Ottawa is in a lockdown situation and no indoor facilities are operating. On the positive side, we were blessed with a warm autumn that allowed tennis to be played outdoors until mid-November, a record for many clubs. The City Championships were held in September, with a high level of participation. Please read the yearbook for an overview of many of the successes of 2020.

4 4 At the 2020 AGM, we identified five priority initiatives for 2021, which were endorsed by the members. The priorities are identified below, and we are pushing ahead on all fronts.

I’m pleased to report that: • the revision to the constitution is well underway and members will be asked to vote on a new version at the 2021 AGM • an enthusiastic group is developing a strategy for competitive junior tennis that will be implemented as soon as feasible • the strategy for adult competitive tennis will include a trial implementation of the UTR (Universal Tennis Rating) format • the facilities development has been refocused on the need to create more indoor tennis facilities in Ottawa and at time of writing there are some promising initiatives Although this Commemorative Yearbook does not contain any reports on celebrations of our 100th anniversary, there are still stories to tell about the history of tennis in Ottawa, as well as reports from clubs across the city. As hinted at in the slide above, this will be the final publication of a Yearbook in this format – even the world of tennis cannot escape the digital revolution. A working group is currently designing a new approach. The next President’s message will be in a different format and I hope to be able to share a more satisfying message.

NCTA VISION

The NCTA board of directors is reviewing the NCTA’s Mission, Vision and Constitution, and we plan to present a revised version for consideration at the 2021 AGM. Currently, the NCTA is first and foremost an association of tennis clubs, so our primary objective is to create a vibrant and growing portfolio of tennis clubs. We partner with the OTA and the City of Ottawa to create pathways that will encourage people to join tennis clubs and to realize their ambitions in terms of competitive play. This includes engaging youth (and their parents), introducing them to tennis and then guiding them towards club membership to nurture their interest or onto high performance programs where they can hone their abilities and potentially establish a career as a competitive player or a coach. The NCTA is an autonomous Region within the Ontario Tennis Association, which means that our mission reflects that of the OTA which is: TheOntario Tennis Association promotes participation in tennis as part of a healthy lifestyle and encourages the pursuit of excellence for all players.

We believe this statement is consistent with our purpose and anticipate that our new mission and vision statements will be fully compatible with the OTA.

5 5 INTRODUCTION:

Organized Tennis in the National Capital Region

6 6 History of Organized Tennis in the National Capital Region

The game of lawn tennis was still in its infancy when it was first played on the grounds of in the late 1870s. With the formation of the Ottawa Lawn Club in 1881 (now known as the Ottawa Tennis and Lawn Bowling Club), a base was laid for the development of organized tennis in the capital. The Canadian Lawn Tennis Association was founded in 1890 and in 1894 the Canadian Championships were held at the Ottawa Club, which at that time was located on Cartier Square. Ottawa players competed in a -based league from 1898 to 1902, and from 1903 to 1909 there was an inter-club league in the capital. City Championships were inaugurated in 1910. The game was played on grass until 1913, when the newly formed Rideau Lawn Tennis Club installed a number of clay Ottawa Lawn Tennis Club Members, 1894 courts. (photo credit: Public Archives of ) After the First World War, there was a great increase in the number of clubs and it was then that the present overall organization had its beginning. The Ottawa District Lawn Tennis Association (ODLTA) was established in the summer of 1920. By the mid-1920s, it had some 40 member clubs. In 1910, the Sir Percy Lake Trophy, emblematic of the men’s singles City Championship and the Dr. F. C. Hanna and Birks Trophies for the Men’s Doubles Championship were first awarded. In 1925, the first Wom- en’s Singles Championship was contested for the P. D. Ross Trophy and the first Mixed Doubles Champi- onship was held for the John Murphy Trophy. The following year, 1926, the Hon. Charles Murphy Trophy, emblematic of the City Women’s Doubles Championship was awarded, completing all the City Champion- ship events for which competitions are still held. Shortly after its formation, the ODLTA became affiliated with the Canadian Lawn Tennis Association and the Ontario Lawn Tennis Association until early in 1958, except for a brief period during the 1940s when it was affiliated with the association. In 1958 the ODLTA was granted “provincial” status by the national organization. Its name was changed to the National Capital Lawn Tennis Association in 1960 and the word “lawn” was dropped in 1979. The NCTA ceased to have “provincial” status in the fall of 1988. In 1991, it became an autonomous region of the Ontario Tennis Association. The ODLTA set up an inter-club league in 1922. It had three main sections designated A, B and C, until 1966, when the present four-division arrangement was adopted. In 2004, the now called Mixed League adopted a Box system to promote more competitive matches. Intermediate championships (for players under the “A” level) were established in 1934. The present Masters’ competition, originally for men 40 and over, began in 1960 when a trophy was given in memory of Jean Rinfret, a colourful player who was fatally injured in a skiing accident. The Canadian National Tennis Championships were held at the Rideau Tennis and Squash Club in 1977, at the Ottawa Tennis and Lawn Bowling Club from 1978 to 1981, and again at the Rideau from 1982 to 1984. For the past few years, the Rideau Tennis Club has hosted the Ontario Open Championships. 7 7 For many years the Rideau Tennis Club was the home of the Canadian Open & Closed Junior Champion- ships. In 1949, the late E. C. Condon established a separate junior tournament, emblematic of the junior city championship. From 2002 to 2004, the Canadian Under 14 National Championships were held at the Ottawa Tennis and Lawn Bowling Club. In 2016, The Steve Stevens Senior National Outdoor Championships returned to the Nation’s Capital after 24 years. Over 470 players competed at five premier club locations in the Ottawa area: the Ottawa Tennis and Lawn Bowling Club, the Rideau Tennis Club, Tennis Centre West Ottawa, Ottawa Club, and Elmdale Tennis Club. The competition was hot and heavy during the week of August 20th- 26th. Players enjoyed two fabulous social events, the opening barbecue at OTLBC and the tournament Steve Stevens Senior Nationals, 2016 banquet at the Museum of History. (Photo credits: Kaylea Groove) In 2017, the Davis Cup returned to Ottawa and was a spectacular success. This was the first time in many years that these championships had been held in Ottawa. The “main event” was the Davis Cup match between Canada and Great Britain – an historic event, happening in the year of Canada’s 150th birthday. The result of the match is in the history books and Canada lost in spectacular fashion. This event welcomed a record-breaking Davis Cup attendance (in Canada) of 21,482 people in total. Since then, Ottawa has seen the sale of the historic Rideau Tennis Club to the Ottawa Sports and Social Club (OSSC) and it to become the Rideau Sports Centre (RSC). The OTLBC has become a non-profit corporation. The residents of and Davis Cup at Lansdowne Place, 2017 the greater tennis community in Ottawa enjoy the (Photo credits: Daniel Prinn) new status and the opportunities to host tournaments and events. Since 2017, Ottawa has seen two events involving Canadian tennis legend Daniel Nestor, one at NTS/TCWO for the four- junior doubles event in May 2019 and “Double Up for Mental Health” in the fall of 2019, with Daniel giving doubles clinics, exhibitions, Q&A and attending the Pro Am fundraiser at the RSC. The year 2020 was marked by many changes in our social and recreational life, and unfortunately also resulted in the permanent closure of the Ottawa Athletic Club. It was indeed, the end to an era. The NCTA is working closely with the City of Ottawa and local clubs to explore opportunities to create more 8indoor courts to meet the growing needs of Ottawa’s tennis community, from junior competition to adult recreation.

NCTA Sponsors

The NCTA wants to express appreciation to our local sponsors, Beth Everson and Kunstadt Sports, for their long-term support! Congratulations to Kunstadt Sports for opening their fourth location in Chelsea this year!

12 12 OTA Regional Coordinator Report by Zhenya Kondratovski It has been a challenging year for everyone and the silver lining has certainly been to rethink our methods of teaching, operating the tennis facilities, playing and competing, organizing tournaments, etc. It was also essential to stay in touch with friends, students, coaches, organizations and community partners. With everything related to tennis on hold, including many OTA programs such as Tennis in the Schools, the Road Show (smash cage) and the competition structure from mid-March to June, there was a lot of communication, sharing of information, responding to numerous inquiries from clubs, working with the City of Ottawa, the NCTA Board of Directors, OTA clubs, and academies regarding changes to guidelines, rules and regulations by the province, the OTA and local health authorities. Zoom meetings have become the norm, as well as webinars with club presidents and executives, lots of e-mails, assistance in interpreting OTA and TC guidelines and provincial rules and regulations. Many of us turned to social media platforms, sharing resources from other countries such as the US, UK, Australia, New Zealand for tennis and “return to play” guidelines, and playing “Tennis at Home”, Zoom coaching and encouraging local coaches and students to stay safe and continue playing or exercising at home. It was great to be on the court, playing tennis again by June. The re-opening of a competitive structure in July gave us hope for a good summer. Camps and programs were run, albeit on reduced hours and limited ratios, and kids got to experience tennis again. Many tennis clubs started the season with decreased revenues, but saw an increase in activity over the summer. There were a number of challenges; for example, some municipal clubs were not able to host OTA junior or adult events due to external factors, such as no access to clubhouses at shared facilities. The number of tournaments plummeted. The closure of the OAC in September was a tough blow to the regional competitive structure and player development, with hundreds of kids, many coaches and tennis players of all ages having to look for new indoor options. That put a strain on indoor capacity in the region and certainly created a need to re-think and redefine how we go forward as a region. The NCTA junior competitive tennis working group, with representation from coaches, club presidents, parents of competitive juniors and NCTA board members, was created in the fall to address those challenges and come up with framework, structure and pathways to grow junior tennis regionally to ensure that the future of the games is protected. In closing, I would like to thank everyone at the OTA, NCTA, City of Ottawa and OTA clubs for your support, being proactive, your advocacy for the game of tennis and “return to play” and doing a great job keeping your members and staff safe, while still delivering programs, camps and lessons as well as playing tennis and keeping us all sane during these challenging times. Fall saw a number of successful tournaments, including the NCTA City Open and Junior Championships, RSC Indoor Open and OTA events at Blackburn TC and RLTC. It was great to launch an indoor component of the Capital Kids Tennis program in November at Greenboro Community Centre with the help and support from City of Ottawa and OTA. I trust that 2021 will see more growth of the game, some new indoor facilities locally and better participation and competitive numbers altogether.

14 14 2020 TENNIS IN OTTAWA

COVID Response

15 15 The 2020 season presented some unique challenges for our member tennis clubs. Tennis was one of the few sports permitted by the province during the various phases of COVID restrictions. Late winter/early spring, there was lots of confusion about guidelines and protocols. Guidance continued to evolve throughout the season. The City of Ottawa guidelines were the authoritative source for our member clubs. These guidelines were created in coordination with the province and were also informed by the return to play guidelines developed by sport governing organizations. The dialogue between NCTA and the City of Ottawa Tennis Representative was very positive, with constant information sharing maintained throughout the season. Clubs had to adjust operations regularly throughout the season to ensure the health and safety of people using the tennis facilities and to adhere to City guidelines. Finances were impacted. For many clubs, program revenues from camps, lessons and clinics were reduced, given the restricted number of people per court. Some clubs offered membership fee incentives to attract members. The OTA reduced by 50% their charge to member clubs. Expenses for this year were also different for clubs. Enhanced cleaning protocols and provision of hand sanitizer increased costs for some clubs. Tennis operations were impacted. There was guidance about tennis ball usage; ability to contact-trace facility users; limited doubles due to social distancing; some courts were closed to ensure capacity guidelines for facilities were not exceeded; and some club houses could not open this season. Limited league play was initiated later in the season. Thanks to committed tennis professionals and club volunteers throughout our region, we were able to maximize what tennis play was possible throughout the season. There was a lot of extra work this year for club executives to respond to the ongoing crisis and regularly inform their members. Tennis professionals worked hard to adhere to the guidelines and adjust children’s activities to ensure safety for participants. We also had great cooperation from club members across the region who adhered to the guidelines and followed protocols, making sure everyone using the tennis facilities was safe and we could continue to play. Thanks to all who had a role in helping to ensure we could play tennis in 2020. Planning for 2021 season has already begun. We know we can count on NCTA clubs and members to be ready!

16 16 OTA ACTIVITY

2020 in Numbers (Provided by by Zhenya Kondratovski)

17 17 Tennis in Schools

12 school visits were completed prior to the strikes at a number of school boards and covid-19 pandemic. Thank you to coaches Javier Ruano-Valdez, Alex Harea and Gary Hawkes. Great job! Since many of the students already engaged in virtual online learning, we are sharing tennis resources with enthusiastic teachers at schools, including video. We are also considering developing simplified tennis curriculum or modules for tennis as part of the racket sports units to keep kids engaged and playing. We have some equipment to lend to schools that want to implement programs on a limited basis in a safe environment.

Capital Kids Tennis Program

Capital Kids Tennis Program was created in partnership with Ontario Trillium Federation, OTA, NCTA and City of Ottawa. The 2020 grant has been deferred to 2021, as the NCTA board felt that it would have more impact locally and make better use of the resources. Despite the COVID and all the current restrictions, with the help of Kelly Bean, the City of Ottawa City Wide Sports portfolio manager, the indoor component of Capital Kids Tennis program launched in November at the Greenboro Community Centre, each Sunday for three hours, where three groups of kids from diverse neighborhoods ages 6-13 were introduced to or continued learning the game of tennis. The program was put on hold on December 26 when the province issued a stay at home order. Thank you to Hao Pan, our Program Coordinator. For more information and registration, please visit www.capitalkidstennis.com

Player of the Month Profiles

Player of the Month Profiles are part of the OTA player development and showcase the top local junior competitors, boys and girls across all age categories, as well as up and coming junior talent. In 2020, 4 player profiles were filmed, edited and published on the NCTA/OTA web sites and social media platforms (Andrej Zoranovic, Ethan Leong, Gena Huang, Emilio Velazquez). Thank you to Matt McKinnon and Peter Smoczynski with Script and Film.Co for your help.

OTA Club Visits

12 OTA club visits were made this year. There were no Road Show (Smash Cage) visits or clinics at the Clubs. I made a point to drop-in to speak with club members, presidents and staff about ongoing club activities and events, as well as the challenges facing clubs and how OTA can help. Some clubs I visited several times, to deliver City of Ottawa physical distancing signage, ensure that the clubs had good COVID-19 health and safety protocols in place: sanitation stations, information and physical distancing

18 18 signs. Three NCTA webinars were organized with OTA member clubs to help them with clarification and interpretation of the OTA and Tennis Canada COVID-19 “Return to Play” guidelines and best practices, including doubles play, safety, facilities operation and protocols. In the spring months we drew extensively on the experience of leading tennis nations like the UK, Australia, New Zealand, , USA, Belgium and Spain. Recommendations were submitted and shared with the NCTA and clubs who were seeking the guidance or had specific questions. Clarification of theguidelines was an ongoing process, as the phases kept changing and guidelines with them. Lots of conversation revolved around singles and doubles play, sharing balls, and physical distancing and keeping entry points and common areas clear and safe.

Competitive Structure

Eight tournaments (6 OTA events, the NCTA City Open Championships and the Rideau Sports Centre Indoor Open) were organized in 2020. It was a tough year because the competitive structure did not re- open until July, and then the OAC closed in September. Some clubs were ready to host tournament but others could not due to external factors and restrictions. Kudos to Blackburn TC and Jason Dupuis for hosting 3 out of 4 OTA junior events as well as Rockcliffe Lawn Tennis Club. Pre-event inspection and social distancing measures were conducted during the OTA events, as required.

19 19 PAST AND PRESENT:

Tennis in the Community (Special Edition for NCTA 100 Year Celebration)

20 20 Courts History at the

By David Hayes, BYC Courts Director Britannia Yacht Club is famous for stunning sunsets, the beautiful Boat Bar and the fellowship of its members. Our fellowship has been tested the last few years with floods and now a pandemic but it is stronger than ever. The club is more than 130 years old and the courts themselves are coming up on 100 years in 2026. BYC Courts history includes both City and National Champions. Don McDiarmid’s parents were members at one time and he got his start here before playing for other clubs in Ottawa. In 2012 the Courts were renamed the Leonard Ball Courts to honour the long-time court advocate and Club Board Member who was often referred to as Mr. Tennis. BYC members Sally and Joe Courtney say he “lived for the job”. He built up the reputation of the courts and was a major contributor to their success. Whether on the courts or on the water BYC likes to start kids young so they learn and enjoy everything BYC has to offer. Generations of BYC tennis programs have included celebrations, tournaments, wheelchair and junior tournaments. Doubles Round Robins are frequent and continue to be a great way for members to play tennis both socially and competitively. Of course we cannot forget the Strawberries and Cream on Wimbledon Sunday. A touch of Sparkling wine always marks the occasion and is a welcome refreshment on hot days. As we all know 2020 broke the streak of almost 30 years when there would be no Strawberries in the Dragon Boat Lounge on the second Sunday in July.

The one-time clay courts were changed to enable a faster game, less maintenance, and more days of tennis play. Today, the courts are surfaced with a Plexi-pave blue surface, durable and easy to maintain and well lit for night play. Tennis and now Pickle Ball at BYC welcome all club members to participate, and both sports are encouraged with free group lessons for members new to our courts.

21 21 Manotick TC - Annual Award

By Elliot Jackson Our club has presented an award annually since 2014 in honour of one of our long-time past members, Joyce Sorensen, who played into her 80s. This award was generously donated by her family following Joyce’s death and was set up to recognize sportsmanship and the love of the game. The award is in the form of a Celtic Mounted Quaich Bowl and the award criteria is awarded on the basis that the winner: • Makes tennis fun for everyone • Encourages and inspires others with a positive attitude • Shows a sense of decorum, respecting the game of tennis and the club members • Plays for the love of tennis

2020 Recipient: As this has been a most unusual season, the executive decided to make a most unusual award which we presented to the club members as a whole in appreciation of their dedication to make this such a successful season despite everything that we have had to contend with such as restrictions in play and COVID rules and guidelines.

Rockcliffe Lawn Tennis Club

By Julie Smith Like the NCTA, Rockcliffe Lawn Tennis Club is also coming up to its 100th anniversary! Here’s a look at our rich and fascinating history. The first meeting to establish a permanent home for a tennis club in the Rockcliffe area took place on September 9, 1922. The officers elected to run the club included D.P., Cruikshank (President), Col. F.L. Armstrong (Vice-President) and Lawrence J. Burpee (Secretary and Treasurer). The Executive Committee consisted of H.S. Southam, Dr. R.E. Wodehouse and H.W. Brown. On September 8, 1923, Letters Patent were issued incorporating the Club as the Rockcliffe Lawn Tennis Club. Some of the founding members will be familiar to those who follow city or national history, including librarian, historian, author and civil servant Lawrence J. Burpee. The club’s location in the heart of the Village of Rockcliffe was leased October 28, 1923 from Charles H. Keefer (who was born at Rideau Hall, then his grandfather Thomas McKay’s residence, and was the son of a prominent civil engineer) to newspaper baron H.S. Southam at an annual rent of $1.00 with an option to purchase the property for $2,250. The option was not acted upon until October 1, 1938 when a sales price of $5,000 was agreed to. However, after the club continued to make further payments, the title was transferred by the executors of the estates of Wilson M. Southam and Harry S. Southam for a payment of $4,000, on July 25, 1956.

22 22 There were temporary clubhouses over the years but the one used today was a Lindal Cedar Home, which was built in 1972. It is loved by members for its rustic and charming feel and remains much as it was then. Over the years, the Club has had members from all walks of life, including some distinguished Canadians such as The Right Honourable Lester B. Pearson, Her Royal Highness Princess Juliana (later Her Majesty the Queen Juliana of the Netherlands), The Right Honourable John Turner, as well as members of the Diplomatic Corps. Our President in 1946/47 was Howard Measures, Canada’s First Chief of Protocol and his son Michael Measures was our President from 1962-1970. RLTC was modelled after Wimbledon and had an only-whites dress code until recently, although junior players starting wearing coloured clothing years ago. It was built as a neighbourhood club for Rockcliffe residents and remains very much a community-based, family-friendly place but now includes residents from all across the city. The club has eight courts (four clay and four hard) and a beautiful setting. RLTC runs junior competitive and recreational programs, adult programs, social events and weekly barbecues. In the past couple of years (pre COVID-19), RLTC added a music night, popular with the growing younger demographic at the club.
