ROB BRADEN Nominated for Rear Commodore (Projects)

PERSONAL INFORMATION: My wife, Sandy and I have 2 adult children. I am an Industrial Designer by education and have been self-employed as an exhibit & trade show designer, project manager and broker for 20+ years.

MEMBERSHIP: I started at BYC as a tag-a-long kid roaming the grounds while my father worked on his boat. I rowed around up-river anchorages while my folks, Rick and Josie rafted with others. My participation and love of racing started with Junior Club, where I achieved the gold standard. Except for a few years in my 20’s when traveling prevailed, I have been an active member at BYC for most of my 58 years. I have been a regular on the Tuesday and Thursday evening start lines and a long history with the upriver races.

CLUB ACTIVITIES: As Fleet Captain from 2008-2011, where, apart from duties with the sailing and racing calendar, I helped rebuild relations with other clubs through their sailing committees, and oversaw the 2011 Shark Canadian Championship. I was the Vice Commodore and Director of Projects 3 years. I led the design team and oversaw the building of the elevator and the design for the East Wall as well as overseeing the rebuilding of the east wall of the Inner Harbour. I believe we need to protect the Club’s prime assets, the harbour and grounds, and as Projects Director working with the appropriate directors, will lead major projects including the renovation of the Inner Harbour walls, and the Clubhouse East Wall. I’ve tried hard to steer a middle ground between lengthy planning with no action, and the ‘quick fix’ approach that may not consider future use and may end up costing the club money down the road.

PAST BYC INVOLVEMENT: My prime focus at BYC has always been racing. Starting as a teenager, I have crewed, cruised and helmed many of the different kinds of boats we see in our harbour. I enjoy helping other Club members get into racing by providing training and teaching opportunities. This past year I raced on the , ‘Unity’ and the Shark, ‘No More Hobbies’. Apart from sailing, in recent years I have taken up tennis again and am involved in both sailing and tennis social activities.

OTHER ACTIVITIES/ASSOCIATIONS: A long time Toastmaster, I have served in the West End Chapter’s board of directors, including 3 terms as club President as well as an Area Governor on the district executive. I enjoy downhill and cross-country skiing in the winter. In past years I was an avid cyclist and still get out for the occasional long road ride. I am also an amateur foodie and enjoy whenever possible the finer aspects of food and wine.

CLUB COMMITTEE COMMITMENT: I will form an East Wall Club House Committee, to move this project forward, and help form and lead, when required, committees for other projects. The intent is to make sure member input is counted before we commit to an action.

OBJECTIVES AS A BOARD MEMBER: To help create a cohesive, effective Board and, working with other Directors, get the projects started and completed.

KEVIN BUNDY Nominated for Director (House and Grounds)

PERSONAL INTRODUCTION: I was born Toronto and I graduated from the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Science in 1976 and a Master's of Science in 1979, specializing in radiation biology. Following graduation, I worked as a radiation protection officer at high grade uranium mines in Northern Saskatchewan. In 1985 we moved to Ottawa where I worked for the Atomic Energy Control Board, which later became the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, until my retirement in 2013. Many of you know Mary, my life and sailing mate of 37. Our daughter, Christine, races on Mondays with Mary and Christine’s SO is David, a great guy even if he prefers power boats. We also have a son, Mark, who is married to a wonderful lady, Jessica. They live with their 2 children in Maryland. Our grand children have joined us for the last 2 BYC Cruise Weeks.

MEMBERSHIP: We joined BYC as Family Members in 2001 and regret not joining sooner.

Our first boat was a , “Hydrophilly,” which we sailed for 22 years in “cottage country” north of Toronto and in Saskatoon, where we were founding members of the Blackstrap Sailing Club (1981). I also enjoy woodworking although my production time is often epic. I am an active member in the Canadian Radiation Protection Association and the Health Physics Society.

CLUB COMMITTEE COMMITMENT: Over my three-year tenure as Director, House and Grounds, I have found that a major part of the job is identifying items that need repair or new items. In this respect, I believe that many hands make light of heavy work, that many eyes see more than just one pair and that many minds produce more ideas and solutions than mine alone ever could. In light of this, I look forward to the continuing involvement of a House and Grounds Committee to aid me in the maintenance and improvement of our clubhouse and grounds.

OBJECTIVES AS BOARD MEMBER: I will continue to actively seek out the ways and means to improve our Club to the benefit of all members. To do this, I will talk and listen to the members, bring their comments and issues to the Board and work with the Board to address these issues in the best interest of BYC. MARION XHIGNESS Nomination for Director (Tennis)

PERSONAL INTRODUCTION: I was born and bred a ‘west-end girl’ in Whitehaven, and remember coming to Britannia Beach by bicycle. I moved back to that ‘hood’ with my husband Andy Hofstaetter and our son Anton after several experiences in both Canada and abroad because the west end is close to family and a great place to live. I work as a teacher for the OCDSB in Adult Education of English as a Second Language, currently at Bayshore Public School. My work with newcomers to Canada helps keep me grounded as a Canadian and yet gives me perspective far beyond our shores. It also helps me realize how lucky I am and what a passion I have for Canada and the people who live here.

MEMBERSHIP: I am a relatively new member to BYC having just completed my third year of membership. Growing up, I had heard stories about the Club as my family has shared a cottage lake since 1971. We now own a C&C29 (Talon D’Or). As a relatively new member, I still remember the feeling of being unknown and what a positive difference the efforts of those who went out of their way to welcome us had. I would like to use this insight to better ‘connect’ with new members and outsiders to both build and deepen our membership here at BYC.

CLUB ACTIVITIES: We enjoy our club as much as we can while still having to work. To be honest, I joined to start a new hobby with my family and to honour my husband’s passion for sailing. Along the way, I have made many new friends, participated in Cruise Week every year, taken an Advantage Boating course, come out for social events as well as participated in things like Tucker-Rodger Regatta. This year I added women’s race nights to my activities here (on Kokopeli). I’ve also quite enjoyed tennis lessons for beginners and this year survived my first tennis tournament!

PAST BYC INVOLVEMENT: In the past 3 years, I have attended AGMs, smaller meetings as well as basically observed the runnings of the Club as a newish member. I feel like I have gained enough knowledge of club operations and the interests of members to start giving back, and I am looking forward to the opportunity to serve on the Board.

OTHER ACTIVITIES/ASSOCIATIONS: I love winter as well as summer because I like to play hockey. I run a small pick-up league and help with my son’s hockey team which Andy coaches. I love skiing, skating, all water sports, and singing. I am a recorded artist with an a cappella group I sang with for more than 20 years called ‘Quintessence’, and more recently have become the vocalist for a 5-piece band. I also volunteer with the Ottawa Suzuki Strings School of Music coordinating concerts in the community for young musicians. I have served on Parent Council at Charlotte- Lemieux Public School. As well, I have served as President of the Bargaining Unit for my teaching group within OSSTF. In my spare time, I like to build things and enjoy wine and travel.

CLUB COMMITTEE COMMITMENT: I will work with a Tennis Committee to engage more of our current membership in our programs on the courts. I am motivated to help our various Club programs work together more seamlessly to improve of the BYC experience and encourage the growth of membership. I will work to build relations among members so we view ourselves as both tennis players and sailors here at BYC.

OBJECTIVES AS BOARD MEMBER: I see my role as a messenger and advocate to represent my fellow Tennis members at Board meetings and to encourage all members to work together for the benefit of all. I hope to foster the love of sport and the involvement of new and junior members as they could be part of the future here at BYC. 10 Full & By November 2016

Farewell…for now!

If you were around the Club in the early morning of September 9th, you would have seen Black Jack leaving the harbour, via a 550 tonne crane and a specialized flatbed truck, for her portage across to then splash down in the lower Ottawa River at Jacques Cartier Park. With a number of staff, crew and volunteers lending a hand, the 110-year old, 87’ Black Jack completed the first leg towards an important 2017 voyage. Rendez-Vous 2017 Tall Ships Regatta will be held in City from July 18-23, 2017 and sister ships Fair Jeanne and Black Jack are travelling in company to meet more than 40 Tall Ships from around the world as part of this maritime celebration of Canada’s 150th. had always planned for Fair Jeanne to make the journey with trainees aboard but when the invitation was extended to Black Jack…preparations started to be made. Planning for the big move was expedited when a ship scheduled to attend the Brockville Tall Ships Festival on September 17 & 18 cancelled their appearance and Black Jack offered to take her place. Whew, what a whirlwind! With Captain Simon Fuller at the helm, a small crew of staff and volunteers moved the ship down the lower Ottawa via Montebello, had an exciting adventure at Carillon lock and navigated the St Lawrence River to Brockville. The festival was attended by over 11,000 people and it seemed like we talked to all of them. Thanks to any of you who stopped by to say hello. Early next summer, Black Jack and Fair Jeanne will head to Toronto and Hamilton for before turning around and making for Quebec City. From there, Black Jack will return westward while Fair Jeanne participates in the out ports program, sailing to Newfoundland, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick before heading home. Youth 12-18 years of age wanting to challenge themselves, meet new friends and represent young Canadians to the world should contact Bytown Brigantine about joining the crew on this once-in-a-lifetime journey. DAVID BRUCE BROWN 1933 – 2016

David was born in Montreal. His career spanned over 40 years in the printing industry, ending up with Atkins Printing Limited that he owned and ran for 13 years. A natural athlete, he excelled at any sport he tried, avid golfer, skier – both cross country and alpine – and passed his love of skiing on to his children and grandchildren. His passion for sailing was something else he passed on to his family. A great dinghy sailor he competed in World Championships. He also loved sailing in his Cal 29 Maple Leaf. David served on our Board of Directors as Membership Director, Youth Director, and served as Commodore in 1983 and 1984. He also served as President of the Ottawa Club of Printinghouse Craftsmen. Dee was a Night Rider and on the Ski Patrol at Camp Fortune. He was a Cub leader, a football coach and a hockey coach. David and Beverley Kirby were married in 1961 and he was the proud father and father-in-law of Pattee and Jeff, David and Kyla, and Karen and Phil. The lights of his life were his six grandchildren, Dawson, Ben, Rowan, James, Alex and Grace. An athlete, a businessman, a community volunteer and a friend to many. He was kind, he was funny. He was loved, he was respected. He was a gentleman, and he will be missed. “You go along and there you are.”

------LES PROCTOR 1922 - 2016

Les Proctor grew up in Watford, UK, and when he was 19, fulfilled his ambition to join the Royal Navy in June 1941. Trained as an Electrical Artificer 4th Class, he was posted to HMS Hecla, a destroyer depot ship. It was mined off Capetown on May 15, 1942, and spent months being repaired in dry dock. When it took part in the Allied landings in North Africa, on November 11, 1942 it was sunk by the German submarine U-515 off Casablanca. Sick with salt water and fuel oil, Les managed to remain afloat in heavy swells that night, trying to stay in touch with other survivors. He swam until dawn and then clung to the ropes of a Carley raft with other men, some of whom died from the cold, fatigue or despair. Because of the threat of submarines, the rescue ships that came by could not stop to pick them up but Les grabbed onto a net from one and was hauled up by its crew. He returned to England where he met and courted his future wife Catherine Macfarlane. In January 1943, Les was drafted to the aircraft carrier HMS Indomitable at Liverpool. It joined the British Pacific Fleet and he served on it until the dropping of the atomic bombs ended the war against Japan. Les moved to Canada with his family in 1955 and got a job as an electrical engineer. He was very active in the BYC Tennis Club, both as Director and a player, winning the Doubles Championship with Bill Davis in 1992. Les is fondly remembered for attending the annual Wimbledon Sunday and helping out at the Tennis Breakfasts. He died on Friday, September 9. “He has not been around much the last couple of years,” said Sandy Nash Braden “but I thought of him often, as I am sure a lot of others did as well. He will be missed.” 16 Full & By November 2016

This Remembrance Day will be the 74th anniversary of the torpedoing of HMS Hecla when 273 of Les's shipmates were killed. As always, it will be an opportunity to recall the duty and sacrifices made by the men and women of his generation during World War II.
