PRÉCIS OF COMMODORE’S REPORT TO THE 2011 AGM by – Konrad Lewinski

This is the second and final year that I have had the privilege to serve as your Commodore. My goal as Commodore was to increase membership, make BYC the premier Yacht Club in Eastern Ontario and grow the Club in a fiscally responsible manner. Our Board has made progress in all the above. We are in good financial shape thanks to the efforts of your Board respecting the operating budget, our General Manager Paul Moore and his staff in implementing our budget plans finding both external revenues and controlling costs. The 125th Anniversary of the establishment of our Club happens next year. Rod Miller and his Committee have spent the last year planning for our 125th Anniversary celebration which kicks off officially New Year’s Eve. We have anniversary regalia available for 2012 and a full schedule of events culminating in Commodore’s Weekend. We thank Rod and his Committee. A long list of work was completed by dedicated volunteers who worked not only on the Spring and Fall Work parties but throughout the season. Thank you to all. The Foy and O’Sullivan combo once again snatched the top spot in the Shark Worlds Lac St. Louis in June for the 3rd time in 4 years! Matt Soosalu and Joel Riordan traveled to Croatia through the fundraising support of BYC members. They posted the best result for a Canadian boat in all classes at the Youth World Championship in July. The Rob Frost/Tom Arbuckle team cleaned up in Kingston and, again with help from BYC member fundraising efforts, are competing for on the Indian Ocean in their 49er. At the request of CORK organizers, a group of BYC members formed a Race Committee at CORK in August, and we hope that we continue to make this a tradition of service to the sailing cause. Last year the BYC Foundation was created. The foundation Board has worked diligently under the leadership of Paul Dick to put in place governance and investment policies. Our sincere thanks for their very hard work. We continued to build our finger dock pod program and look forward to continued member enthusiasm and commitment this coming year. The long anticipated boat handling project became operational with the Crane Christening in October celebrated by Mayor Watson and our Ward Councillor, Mark Taylor. Andrew Furey got the cycle time down to 20 minutes for hauling a boat. The Harbourmaster and I expressed our confidence by skipping the mobile cranes and being hauled flawlessly by the 12,000 pound capacity crane and hydraulic trailer combination. The crane project team deserves our thanks. Club Safety Officer Joe Courtney had Emergency ladders installed throughout the harbour for those sailors who can’t seem to stay on board. Thank you Joe. At a Special General Meeting on November 9 the membership approved the establishment of a harbour maintenance program setting aside $20K of capital funds in each of the next 5 years for this work. The Club donated 6 Junior Learn-to-Sail registrations as a community outreach to the Christie Lake Kids program. The successful students are anxious to return next year for their continuing training. The Executive Director of Christie Lake Kids attended the November Board of Directors meeting and presented the Club with a plaque in appreciation of our contribution to the program success. Sean Oderkirk and his RC team did a fabulous job in setting courses for Series racing all Spring, Summer and Fall as well as up-river events. I am informed that he’s returning next season so we have great sailing courses to look forward to for another year. We hosted the Women in Wind Seminar this Spring. The organizers coaxed Denny Foy and Ron Schute to lead a safety seminar, much to the appreciation of the audience. Good job. Thanks to Jane Almond our Women’s Racing Rep. and the boys who have forgotten more about sailing than most of us have learned. A busy calendar of regattas was held at the Club: the Canadian Masters’ Windsurfing Association Championship, the 54th Annual National Capital Regatta and the 4th Annual Stan Carson Memorial C&C Regatta. Volunteer implementation teams worked countless hours to ensure the success of these events. Their names are too many to mention, but let me single out Lynn Delorme, the NCR Chair for the last 4 years. Cruise Week was a great success once again this year. Thanks to Bob Sunday. The Awards Banquet was the largest attendance in years. Good food and (courtesy of Billy Fuller) entertainment. Thanks to Joan Yuile and her Committee. Our communications and Information Technology is administered by dedicated volunteers like Al Malo and Larry Bradley with outside assistance for emergency issues. Dave Brown Jr., IT Director, hosted a training session for Board members to permit them to update their portfolio web pages. Bill Brown took on the task of getting our Social portfolio up and running with the help of his committee right after the last AGM. All events were planned and executed with flawless precision and the members showed their appreciation by flocking to the events.

11 January - March 201 2 Full & By Dan Delorey increased the profile of the Tennis programs on our website homepage. A partnership was forged for community outreach with the Odawa Native Friendship Center providing court time to encourage healthy life styles for the Native community living in and visiting the National Capital. New fencing will be installed on three sides of the tennis courts in time for next Spring’s season. Kirk Robertson took on the challenge of Chairing and forming a new Long Term Planning Committee early this year. He scrambled along with the Project Director’s team to come up with plans for the West Wall rehabilitation project and other capital and asset rehabilitation plans. The West Wall Rehabilitation Project received unanimous approval at the November 9, 2011 SGM. Also passed at the SGM was a financing plan to cover the project cost. This was a key decision in that it allows the Club to maintain the majority of future year capital allocations for other needed projects. At this time I’d like to express my sincere thanks to the Board of Directors for their support and enthusiasm which made my load so much easier. I ran for the post of Commodore for the last two years because I share your passion for this great Club. I hope that you will transfer your trust and confidence to the new Commodore and incoming Board of Directors who will continue to build on our 125 year foundation.
