José Manuel Molina Hernández Alcalde de la Villa de Tegueste Greetings from the Alcalde In the early years of the colonization, vine-growing arrived to Tegueste; it was the dawn of the 16th century and, little by litt- le, thanks to the quality offered by the different grape varieties and the good wines that were produced, vine planting spread throughout the town. More than five centuries have passed in which the contribution of this activity has been critical to the economy of the neighbourhood, and is still a very important means of streamlining that has a positive influence on agricul- ture, trade, catering, leisure and tourism in Tegueste. Growers and wine-makers have made a notable learning and improvement effort, especially in the last thirty years, aware of the importance and interest of the development of wine production. In this manner, they have ensured the competi- tiveness of the wines produced in the town and also that they enjoy a well-deserved prestige both within and beyond our Islands. In the light of all this, the Town Hall of this Villa welcomes with enthusiasm the publication of this Tegueste Wine Guide, since it is an instrument that will contribute to greater dissemination and knowledge of this constantly de- veloping sector. Tegueste wines: tradition and quality Historically, wine played a key role in the Canary Islands, and in the case of the Villa de Tegueste, there are specific reasons that back up this statement. Tegueste’s landscape is surrounded by vineyards that add colour and character to the environment. The climatic conditions and the favourable conditions of the soil were decisive factors in the adaptation of the vines in order for the wine to become of social and family importance beyond religious practices, but above all, the festive nature that surrounds wine consumption gives it a presence in daily life and in all the festive events that are held. Due to all these aspects, Tegueste wine has an identity of its own, having been able to take advantage of the benefits provided by such a small spot and thus achieve a distinctive wine variety, worthy of being enhanced, inasmuch as it has not given in to globalization standards. Tegueste red wines are multivarietal wines, with the Listán Negro variety being predominant over the other varieties, but with the presence of white varietals that endow them with personality. As per white wines, also multivarietal, they are aromatic and fresh, with a certain minerality due to volcanic soils. In a nutshell, wine in Tegueste is landscape, tradition, culture, history, art... Wine in Tegueste is life. Avite The Asociación Vitivinícola de Tegueste (Tegueste’s Wine-Production Association, AVITE by its Spanish initials) was created in 2004 with the purposes of promoting the wine sector and seeking alternatives to diversify the activities related to the grapevines and the wineries in order to generate new sources of wealth, based on wine production, as a pillar for the economy of Tegueste. Currently, the Association has more than 200 members that foster vine-growing and quality wine-making, promote the transfer between generations and the professionalisation and streamlining of this industry, in order to put the town forward in Tenerife’s wine-production scene. AVITE was awarded the Centro de Iniciativas Turísticas del Nordeste de Tenerife (Northeastern Tenerife Centre of Tourism Initiatives) Prize in 2008, and the Tenerife Rural Prize in 2015. Tacoronte-Acentejo DO and Islas Canarias PDO The designation of origin is the legal recognition and the recognition for protection granted to a product—wine, in this case—which is made in a specific geographic environment, with specific production and manufacturing systems as well. In the case of the town of Tegueste, several wineries among those included in this guide belong to the Tacoronte-Acentejo Designation of Origin or to the Islas Canarias Designation of Origin. The Tacoronte-Acentejo DO was created in 1992 and was the first wine- producing region in the Canary Islands to obtain this recognition. This designation represents 40% of the cultivated area in the Island of Tenerife and 20% of the wine-producing area in the Canary Islands, being the area with the highest density of vineyards in the Archipelago. The Islas Canarias Protected Designation of Origin was born during the 2012 harvest, with the purpose of consolidating the regional wine market and thus have a common brand to be marketed internationally, allowing for the presence of wine from the Canary Islands in foreign markets.

Escorted Tours in Andalusia WINE TOUR: ANDALUCIA IN A GLASS (Small exclusive group tour 4-12 people) Whether you are a seasoned fine wine aficionado or simply a lover of the grape looking to enjoy and better your knowledge of it, Andalusia is definitely the place for you! Wine in Andalusia has come a long way since 1100 BC when the Phoenicians first planted their vineyards in the fertile lands of Cadiz. By Roman times, wine was being produced in Andalusia in a big way and interestingly enough, this continued through Moorish times; despite the fact that the Koran frowns on the consumption of alcohol, some found creative ways to interpret the Koran’s words on wine, providing some justification such as medicinal purposes. From the 15th century onwards, Andalusian wines were shipped to appreciative drinkers elsewhere in Europe, particularly England, where there was a great fondness for Sack (as Sherry was called then) and sweet wines from Malaga. This happy situation prevailed until the 19th century when European vineyards were affected by the Oidium fungus (Powdery Mildew), followed by an even more devastating plague of Phylloxera (American vine root louse) which first appeared in Bordeaux in 1868 and spread to South Spain 20 years later. As a result, vineyards were replanted with plague-resistant American rootstock, while some, sadly, never fully recovered... From the historic sherries of Jerez, to the up-and-coming new vineyards in Ronda and Granada province, Andalusia boasts numerous top-quality wines. There are over 40.000 hectares of vineyards planted in 20 regions with over half of the wine production concentrated over 4 major ‘Denominación de Origen’ (D.O.

Two territories of similar extension and with historical coincidences in their development have been selected: the Okanagan Valley, Canada, and the region of Somontano, Spain. Methodologically, an analysis of the content on Twitter has been performed, collecting 1377 tweets. The conclusion is that wineries create sentimental and experiential links with the users, avoiding commercial communications. Specifically, Okanagan wineries establish a relevant conversation network on Twitter based on the high percentage of responses, which is 31.3%, but this is not so in the case of Somontano, which is 12.8%. The tourist attractions most used to create a bond are the wine landscape and the gastronomy in the case of both territories. The tourism sustainability variable remains a minor matter in the emission of messages on Twitter. Islenos and Malaguenos of Louisiana Part 1 Louisiana Historical Background 1761 – 1763 1761 – 1763 1761 – 1763 •Spain sides with France in the now expanded Seven Years War •The Treaty of Fontainebleau was a secret agreement of 1762 in which France ceded Louisiana (New France) to Spain. •Spain acquires Louisiana Territory from France 1763 •No troops or officials for several years •The colonists in western Louisiana did not accept the transition, and expelled the first Spanish governor in the Rebellion of 1768. Alejandro O'Reilly suppressed the rebellion and formally raised the Spanish flag in 1769. Antonio de Ulloa Alejandro O'Reilly 1763 – 1770 1763 – 1770 •France’s secret treaty contained provisions to acquire the western Louisiana from Spain in the future. •Spain didn’t really have much interest since there wasn’t any precious metal compared to the rest of the South America and Louisiana was a financial burden to the French for so long. •British obtains all of Florida, including areas north of Lake Pontchartrain, Lake Maurepas and Bayou Manchac. •British built star-shaped sixgun fort, built in 1764, to guard the northern side of Bayou Manchac. •Bayou Manchac was an alternate route to Baton Rouge from the Gulf bypassing French controlled New Orleans. •After Britain acquired eastern Louisiana, by 1770, Spain became weary of the British encroaching upon it’s new territory west of the Mississippi. •Spain needed a way to populate it’s new territory and defend it. •Since Spain was allied with France, and because of the Treaty of Allegiance in 1778, Spain found itself allied with the Americans during their independence.

Within a range of research topics, steep slope viticulture is still a major focus at the University of Geisenheim. We will discuss various aspects of consumer´s recognition, viticultural constraints in terms of climatic adaptations (water requirements, training system or fruit composition) as well as innovations in mechanisation in the context of future challenges of steep slope viticulture.

Spain Is a Viticulture Miracle Waiting to Happen, and Has Been in This Pregnant State for Longer Than Seems Decent

SPAIN In a nutshell: Land of American oak, sherry, and loin-yielding bush vines. Grapes: Tempranillo, Garnacha (Grenache) (RED), Airen, Viura (Maccabeo), Verdejo, Albarino (XMITE) Spain is a viticulture miracle waiting to happen, and has been in this pregnant state for longer than seems decent. Proud possessor of more land devoted to vines than any other, Spain is only just beginning to capitalize on this resource in any consistent or cohesive way - which is perhaps not surprising. If it had Germany's love of efficiency, or France's respect for bureaucracy, Spain might be sending us oceans of judiciously priced wine made expressly for the international market. But Spain is an anarchic jumble of districts and regions, just as its landscape is an anarchic jumble of staggeringly raw scenery and heartbreakingly awful human constructions, and has to be treated as such by the wine enthusiast. There is real treasure to be found by those prepared to dig, however and, as a connoisseur class develops in Spain itself, all manner of ambitious investors are planning to change the image of Spanish wine. A look at the map suggests just how much climatic diversity there is likely to be between Spain's many wine regions, from the soggy vine yards of Galicia on the north Atlantic coast to the baked Mediterranean south east. Spain's saving grace, viticulturally, is the altitude of her vineyards, many over 650 m (2000 ft). A high proportion of Spanish vineyards therefore manage to produce grapes with good levels of color and acidity simply because night-time temperatures are relatively low, and grapes do not ripen until the end of a usefully prolonged growing season.
