El Instituto Español de Comercio Exterior (ICEX) promueve este año cinco catas temáticas, cuatro de ellas patrocinadas por los Consejos Reguladores de las Denominaciones de Ori- gen de Rías Baixas, Rioja y Ribera del Duero y la Asociación de Grandes Pagos de España, en las que podrá degustar sus vinos, seleccionados todos ellos en base a unos criterios de calidad que muestren el potencial actual y futuro de los vinos españoles. La cata organizada por ICEX bajo el título "Innovative Spain: Ancient vineyards,new wines", mostrará una selección de mar- cas novedosas e interesantes que han surgido el último año en el panorama vinícola nacional. This year, the Spanish Institute for Foreign Trade (ICEX) is promoting five thematic wine tasting sessions, four of which are sponsored by the Regulatory Councils of the Rías Baixas, Ribera del Duero and Rioja’s Denominations of Origin and the Grandes Pagos de España Association, where you will be able to taste their wines selected based on quality criteria to demonstrate the current and future potential of Spanish wines. These Galician proverbs were collected from 282 people or points of information that comment on wine production, preservation, drinking effects, medical use, quality (depending on different production areas in Galicia), pairing to certain dishes, historical distribution of wine by mule drivers (‘arrieiros’) and also about its sacralization and other popular beliefs associated with Galician wine. This article is a tribute to historical and present-day Galician winemarkers and is at the same time trying to explain the socio economic effect of the current international prestige of Galician wines.     SPAIN In a nutshell: Land of American oak, sherry, and loin-yielding bush vines. Grapes: Tempranillo, Garnacha (Grenache) (RED), Airen, Viura (Maccabeo), Verdejo, Albarino (XMITE) Spain is a viticulture miracle waiting to happen, and has been in this pregnant state for longer than seems decent. Proud possessor of more land devoted to vines than any other, Spain is only just beginning to capitalize on this resource in any consistent or cohesive way - which is perhaps not surprising. If it had Germany's love of efficiency, or France's respect for bureaucracy, Spain might be sending us oceans of judiciously priced wine made expressly for the international market. But Spain is an anarchic jumble of districts and regions, just as its landscape is an anarchic jumble of staggeringly raw scenery and heartbreakingly awful human constructions, and has to be treated as such by the wine enthusiast. There is real treasure to be found by those prepared to dig, however and, as a connoisseur class develops in Spain itself, all manner of ambitious investors are planning to change the image of Spanish wine. A look at the map suggests just how much climatic diversity there is likely to be between Spain's many wine regions, from the soggy vine yards of Galicia on the north Atlantic coast to the baked Mediterranean south east. Spain's saving grace, viticulturally, is the altitude of her vineyards, many over 650 m (2000 ft).
