Madrid Fusión que se celebra en Madrid los días 19, 20, 21, y

22 de enero.

El Instituto Español de Comercio Exterior (ICEX) promueve

este año cinco catas temáticas, cuatro de ellas patrocinadas

por los Consejos Reguladores de las Denominaciones de Ori-

gen de Rías Baixas, Rioja y Ribera del Duero y la Asociación

de Grandes Pagos de España, en las que podrá degustar sus

vinos, seleccionados todos ellos en base a unos criterios de

calidad que muestren el potencial actual y futuro de los vinos

españoles.

La cata organizada por ICEX bajo el título "Innovative Spain:

Ancient vineyards,new wines", mostrará una selección de mar-

cas novedosas e interesantes que han surgido el último año en

el panorama vinícola nacional.

Grandes Pagos de España Association, where you will be able to taste their wines selected based on quality criteria to demonstrate the current and future potential of Spanish wines.

The " Innovative Spain: Ancient vineyards, new wines" wine tasting session hosted by ICEX will present a selection of new and interesting brands which have emerged in the Spanish national market over the last year.

Spanish grapevines provide an inﬁnite source of initiatives that year after year enrich the colour palette of Spanish wines: new wineries; wines that reveal new shades and subtleties in regions about which we thought we knew everything; lesser-known areas in which certain oenologists touched by genius or an adventurous spirit dare to reveal hitherto unsuspected possibilities… All of this is possible. All of this happens, day after day, in a wine industry that is committed to searching for individuality, for uniqueness. In this tasting, ICEX offers us the very latest in Spanish wine without having to leave the table. The Regulatory Council for the Rías Baixas Denomination of Origin has put together for this tasting a selection of white wines made using the Albariño grape variety, the maximum exponent of a wine-producing area that has achieved exemplary self-promotion in the national and international market, changing the traditional profile of its vintage whites for wines that offer increased complexity, subtlety and appeal over time. The process of modernisation undergone by Rías Baixas in just two decades, the time the Regulatory Council has been up and running, has radically transformed the wine-producing panorama of this region, which nonetheless maintains some of its traditional defining features. The land tenure system of smallholdings is still firmly rooted in Galicia’s agricultural society, but due to the proliferation of growers selling their grapes to wineries, increasingly stricter controls have been imposed by these wineries in relation to the grapes they buy. Quality is required and is paid for, giving rise to an ever higher quality fruit used to make great wines in wineries equipped with all the latest technological advances required to produce wines that are modern in their conception, cutting-edge in their production and at the same time traditional in their spirit, since no technological advance could simulate the bond with the personality of the land that makes them unique. The Albariño grape variety has demonstrated its capacity, when great care is taken in the process, to mature in the bottle, overcoming the standard objection that dismisses Spanish white grape varieties as lacking in complexity, which prevented them from being marketed as anything other than vintage wines. We now know that these wines gain in complexity over time, and researchers are tirelessly in their search for the most ideal production and ageing systems to support, through oenological work, their status as wines suitable for ageing.

Ribera del Duero has celebrated its first 25 years of history and it almost seems as if it were another world in which, in 1982, a small group of wineries, eleven to be precise, set in motion what is now considered to be one of the most powerful wine- making regions in Spain. Over these years, this Castilla y León Denomination of Origin has seen the number of wineries producing wines on its soil increase exponentially, has become one of the largest destinations for investments in vineyards and wine-making facilities, and has secured an extraordinary reputation for itself both nationally and internationally thanks to its wines, without which the Spanish wine map would not be complete. The history of Ribera del Duero reflects in some ways much of the evolution (revolution, if you will) that Spanish wine as a whole has experienced in recent years: the progressive adaptation of its traditional wineries and the reconversion of its facilities and vineyards to meet the demands of today’s market; the significant step taken by many of its producers from vine-growers to wine-producers and bottlers; the arrival of large companies trusting in the quality of its different areas, and willing to invest as much as necessary to extract from these lands high quality wine; the gradual discovery of new exceptional lands… As a result, today Ribera del Duero works with a vast array of oenologists and winery owners committed to quality, as well as established wineries, which has enabled it to draw out undeniable potential from its vines, according to the international critics. Corría el año 2000 cuando ocho bodegueros de las dos

castillas, encabezados por Carlos Falcó, marqués de Griñón,

decidieron poner en pie una asociación de elaboradores de

vino cuyas bodegas respondiesen a un criterio bastante sen-

cillo en su enunciación: los vinos que elaborasen debían pro-

ceder de un único viñedo propiedad de la bodega y servir de

reflejo a su terruño concreto y a su microclima singular. Así

In the year 2000, eight winery owners -led by Carlos Falcó, Marquess of Griñón- from Castilla La Mancha and Castilla y León decided to set up an association of wine producers under the banner by one simple criterion: their wines must be produced using grapes from a single vineyard owned by the winery and must reflect that specific area and its unique microclimate. The result was Grandes Pagos de Castilla. The purpose of this association was simple: to defend the unique personality of vinos de pago, select limited edition estate wines, and spread the culture of these wines, which were just beginning to emerge at that time, since the association was set up at around the same time as the Act was passed authorising the first geographical denominations for vinos de pago in Spain, of which the founder members (Finca Élez and Dominio de Valdepusa) were the first beneficiaries. Just three years later, in 2003, the association had to open its doors to new members. Many wineries in other wine-producing regions of Spain wished to join this select Spanish wine club and ten new members joined the ranks of the Grandes Pagos that year, ushering in a new era as the association became Grandes Pagos de España. This private association is governed by different criteria to those used by institutions to concede the geographical denomination of vino de pago to a winery. One of its main goals, as mentioned previously, is to create wines with a unique personality, defined by the area and the soil on which the vines grow, although it is also a space for sharing information, knowledge and techniques, and a shared platform to promote on the national and international stage the increasing importance and validity of the principles defended by its members in today’s globalised world of wine.
