Name of the Project: Strengthening Meteorological Information Services and Early Warning System under Bangladesh Weather and Climate Services Regional Project (BWCSRP) Component A Duration of the Project: July 2016 to June 2021 Total Amount of the Taka: 462.93 core (RPA) (58.88 million US$) and 57.22 core (Govt.) Taka. Signing Ceremony Financing Agreement Objective of the project The South Asia region is highly prone to water related hazards such as floods, drought, tropical cyclones and thunderstorms. Last two decades more than 750 million people have been affected by at least one natural disaster. In Bangladesh /Depression, Storm Surge, Wind driven surge, Heavy rainfall, Land slide, Floods, Local severe thunderstorm/Tornadoes, Heat wave, Cold wave, Drought, River Erosion, Earthquakes etc are in common natural disaster. To strengthen capacity of Bangladesh Meteorological Department and to mitigate weather and climate related hazards by improving the accuracy and lead time of weather forecasts and warning and improving the quality of climate Services in Priority sectors. Main Activities of the Project

Modernization of surface, Ocean and upper air monitoring networks and ICT systems: ❑ Strengthening of weather Observing systems by installing 200 Ag-Automatic all over the country. ❑ To set up 3 Buoys system in the sea and install Super Computer in SWC , 3 Rader for International airport for Aero dram forecast. ❑ Strengthening six divisional climate centers ❑ Connect all observatories of BMD through a network ❑ Vertical extension of Meteorological Complex ❑ To establish a national framework of climate ❑ Upgrade GTS Link for receiving and disseminating data internationally. ❑ Capacity buildup training program. Overall Project Management (BWCSRP comp A)

The Government of Bangladesh is responsible for project management and coordination through its Ministry of Defence. The implementation of this project requires close coordination between the different Government agencies. The coordination is needed around several issues including cooperation to install monitoring equipment. Ministry of water resources, Ministry of Local Government etc to get permission to install the equipment. For smooth implementation of the project a JTWG committee was formed.
