SPIEGLER Allied Research Associates, Inc., Concord, Mass. ABSTRACT A detailed analysis of conventional and aircraft reconnaissance data and satellite pictures for two unnamed Atlantic Ocean cyclones during 1970 indicates that the stqrms were of tropical nature and were probably of at least minimal hurricane intensity for part of their life history. Prior to becoming a hurricane, one of the storms exhibited characteristics not typical of any of the recognized classical cyclone types [i.e., tropical, extratropical, and subtropical (Kona)]. The implications of this are discussed and the concept of semitropical cyclones as a separate cyclone category is advanced. 6.     THE QUANDARY OF ALLIED LOGISTICS FROM D-DAY TO THE RHINE By Parker Andrew Roberson November, 2018 Director: Dr. Wade G. Dudley Program in American History, Department of History This thesis analyzes the Allied campaign in Europe from the D-Day landings to the crossing of the Rhine to argue that, had American and British forces given the port of Antwerp priority over Operation Market Garden, the war may have ended sooner. This study analyzes the logistical system and the strategic decisions of the Allied forces in order to explore the possibility of a shortened European campaign. Three overall ideas are covered: logistics and the broad-front strategy, the importance of ports to military campaigns, and the consequences of the decisions of the Allied commanders at Antwerp. The analysis of these points will enforce the theory that, had Antwerp been given priority, the war in Europe may have ended sooner. James Barnet, the Colonial Architect from 1865 to 1890, was responsible for some 15 lighthouses in NSW, in particular during the period 1875-1885. Other lighthouses he designed include the Macquarie Light on Sydney’s south head, after Greenway’s tower experienced problems; Cape Byron; Norah Head; and the nearby Greencape light, south of Eden.

Oh, my name’s Ian Gordon and I was born in Chorlton-cum-Hardy, a suburb of Manchester, in 24th June 1925. Thank you. What were you doing when war first broke out? When war first broke out I was at school. I was at the local grammar school and I was swatting for my school certificate which I - and we were evacuated from Manchester to Lytham St Annes on the Fylde coast and when we - after we spent about six months in billets in Lytham, realised that there wasn’t going to be the expected Blitzkrieg of all the cities at that time, so gradually the schools went back to where they’d come from. And so we continued to study for our school certificates and then the air raid started in the evening.

Persson Department for research and development Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute SE 601 71 Norrköping, Sweden [email protected] Old knowledge will often be rediscovered and presented under new labels, causing much confusion and impeding progress—Tor Bergeron.1 Introduction In May 1735 a fairly unknown Englishman, George Hadley, published a groundbreaking paper, “On the Cause of the General Trade Winds,” in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society. His path to fame was long and it took 100 years to have his ideas accepted by the scientific community. But today there is a “Hadley Crater” on the moon, the convectively overturning in the tropics is called “The Hadley Cell,” and the climatological centre of the UK Meteorological Office “The Hadley Centre.” By profession a lawyer, born in London, George Hadley (1685-1768) had in 1735 just became a member of the Royal Society. He was in charge of the Society’s meteorological work which consisted of providing instruments to foreign correspondents and of supervising, collecting and scrutinizing the continental network of meteorological observations2. This made him think about the variations in time and geographical location of the surface pressure and its relation to the winds3. Already in a paper, possibly written before 1735, Hadley carried out an interesting and far-sighted discussion on the winds, which he found “of so uncertain and variable nature”: Hadley’s Principle 18 …concerning the Cause of the Trade-Winds, that for the same Cause the Motion of the Air will not be naturally in a great Circle, for any great Space upon the surface of the Earth anywhere, unless in the Equator itself, but in some other Line, and, in general, all Winds, as they come nearer the Equator will become more easterly, and as they recede from it, more and more westerly, unless some other Cause intervene4.

The guide is intended to be a brief guide to some of the events of D-Day and the Battle for Normandy and locations where you are likely to visit. It is not a complete gazetteer of all sites available (see "selection" below) and many well known and dozens of lesser known sites are omitted. If you wish to make visits other than those listed, it is hoped that the bibliography provided will be of use. It does not provide an exact itinerary, but rather gives you information on a number of sites from which to make your own selection. This is partly because the area covered by the Battle of Normandy is huge, the beaches alone stretching for some fifty miles, and the visits that you choose will partly be dictated by the location of your accom- modation and by-your point of entry/exit to and from the region.
