M I N U T E S of the Moore Board of Education Reg ular Meeting Room 122, Administrative Service Center March 8, 2010 Mrs. Jamey Allen, President of the Board of Education, called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m. Pursuant to the annual election of February 9, 2010, the Clerk of the Board, Vicki Brickman, administered the oath of office to the following board members: Michael Wright – Board Seat #3 Karen Shuey – Board Seat #5 Afterwards, roll call was as follows: Leemaster Here Painter Here Shuey Here Wright Here Allen Here The flag salute was led by Brayden Coleman, 4th grade student from Plaza Towers Elementary. Motion was made by Dr. Leemaster and seconded by Mr. Wright to adopt the agenda as presented with the inclusion of NEW BUSINESS. Vote as follows: Leemaster Yes Painter Yes Shuey Yes Wright Yes Allen Yes Motion carried 5-0. Motion was made by Mr. Wright and seconded by Dr. Painter to elect Dr. Leemaster as Board President. Vote as follows: Leemaster Abstain Painter Yes Shuey Yes Wright Yes Allen Yes Motion carried 4-0 with 1 abstention. Motion was made by Mr. Wright and seconded by Mrs. Shuey to elect Mrs. Allen as Board Vice President. Vote as follows: Leemaster Yes Painter Yes Shuey Yes Minutes 3/8/10 Page 2 Wright Yes Allen Abstain Motion carried 4-0 with 1 abstention. Motion was made by Dr. Leemaster and seconded by Mr. Wright to appoint Vicki Brickman as Clerk of the Board. (Dr. Leemaster and Mrs. Allen then exchanged places on the dais and Dr. Leemaster presided over the rest of the board meeting.) Under SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT, Mrs. Pierce provided the following information: 1. This year, nearly 1500 students from across the state submitted entries in the Oklahoma Bar Association’s Law Day contest based on the theme, “Our History: Milestones in the Law.” (Mrs. Pierce introduced Mrs. Lois Sturch, SEARCH teacher, who introduced some very special students who received awards for their entries in the contest.) 2. Mrs. Pierce introduced Teresa Potter, Fisher SEARCH teacher, who presented students that participated in Colonial Day activities at the State Capitol. The students recited a “Constitution Rap” and Phiyen Nguyen, fifth grade student from Fisher, read her essay entitled, “What it Means to be an American”. Her essay placed first out of 500 students, and she received a $100 savings bond and a plaque. 3. Congratulations to Lolieta Miller from Westmoore High School for recently being named “Special Educator of the Year” by the Oklahoma Council for Exceptional Children. Congratulations, also, to Dena Taylor, Principal of Southgate/Rippetoe Elementary, for being named the Outstanding Administrator of the Year by the same organization. 4. Beth Harper, math teacher at Southmoore High School, has been selected as a state finalist for the prestigious Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. As a finalist she is a candidate for the 2009 Presidential Award which will be announced at a later date. 5. Chelsie Duff, first year Oklahoma History Teacher at Moore High School, has been selected to participate in OU’s First Summer Institute in Oklahoma History from June 28th to July 1st. Only 20 teachers from across the state were invited to attend. Minutes 3/8/10 Page 3 6. Briarwood teacher, Holley Sykes, has been accepted into the 2010 Honeywell Educators Space Academy located at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama to be held June 11-17, 2010. The Space Academy is a professional development program for teachers to learn new and innovative techniques in teaching science and math. 7. The following award winners were announced as winners from the Central Oklahoma Regional Science and Engineering Fair: Elementary School Winners: Apple Creek Curtis Brock Eastlake Jenae Gerton & Connie Green Bonds Luke Gowdy, Kayla Hubbard, Kinsey Rogers, & Sean Talley Briarwood Ethan Maddy & Sean Landis Broadmoore Jordan Wilson, Kay Woodring, & Elizabeth Morren Red Oak Millie Tritten & Dillon Noak Santa Fe Bailey Pavlik Junior High Winners: Brink Jr. High Daniel Bothwell & Colin Spaur Highland West Hailey Burgett, Miranda Koutahi, Jacob Lawton, & Katie Loman Highland East Taylor Godsey & Spencer Hinkle West Jr. High Julie Nguyen, Yongi Sohn, and Cynthia Tran Central Jr. High Nicholas Kinney High School Winners: Westmoore High School: Jeremy Christian, Shaylee Crawford, Jeffery Ensign, Jennifer Marasla, Krutik Coni, & Paulis Velesko Southmoore High School: Connor Archer, Austin Beauchamp, Ashlynn Brown, Brandon Cash, Ashley Coulsen, Kaitlin Curran, Jacob Davis, Peter George, Ashley Hartley, Sandra Ho, Brian Johnson, Brittanie Jones, Johnson Ong, Paige Parrack, & Tyler Thompson 8. On February 9th, Highland West hosted the Region 4 Oklahoma Spelling Bee. There were fifteen competitors from ten local schools. The final two spellers went 30 rounds as they each tried to out spell the other. In the end, Sang Ngo, an eighth grade student at Highland West, was the winner. Sang will now compete at the Central Oklahoma Spelling Bee. 9. Also in the news, Carol Ann Warner, music teacher at Apple Creek Elementary School, took the VFW’s top award in the state for teachers. She won the District 10, as well as the state National Citizenship Education Teacher Award. The VFW began this award in Minutes 3/8/10 Page 4 1999 to recognize classroom teachers for promoting citizenship education with their students. 10. Three students from Westmoore High School have been chosen as Academic All Staters - Toby Bothwell, Teresa Le, and Caleb St. Laurent. Congratulations to these young people on their achievement. 11. Johnathan McClintick and Teresa Tran, students at Southmoore High School, have been notified that their work will be published in the spring anthology of the Oklahoma Council for Teachers of English Young Writers’ Contest. In addition, Johnathan was chosen as the Regional “Poetry Out Loud” Winner. He now advances to state competition. 12. Benjamin Canizles, student at Southmoore High School, has won a $500 scholarship for receiving honorable mention for work submitted to The Sutton Avian Research Center and Nature Works. 13. Congratulations to Bill Garner, English Teacher at Southmoore High School, for being named the Magic 107.7 teacher of the month. He is now eligible for teacher of the year which includes an all expenses paid trip to Mexico. 14. Brink Jr. High is proud to announce that several of its students received recognition at the State Invention Fair. Halie Hollingsworth received honorable mention in the middle school/junior high division for her invention, Dog Anti Window Repellent. Elizabeth Disalvatore and Christian Jump were awarded the honor for the top invention in the middle school/junior high division – Infant Alarm. They received a $100.00 cash prize and their teacher, James Robb, also received a $100 cash prize. In Athletic News: 1. Colby Moates, a seventh grade student from Highland East, took third place in the State Wrestling Championship. 2. Zac Damico, a freshman at Southmoore High School, won the state wrestling championship at 103 pounds. Zac has the distinction of being the first state wrestling champion at Southmoore High School. 3. Austin Haywood, a senior at Southmoore High School, has been nominated as a McDonald’s All-American in high school basketball. District student athlete swimmers placed as follows at the State Swim Meet: Minutes 3/8/10 Page 5 Moore High School: Dalton Myers, 100 freestyle – 9th place; 200 freestyle – 10th place Boys Team – 200 medley relay – 12th place Boys Team - 200 freestyle relay – 12th place Girls Team – 400 freestyle relay – 13th place Southmoore High School: Paul Le , 100 freestyle – 2nd place; Paul Le – 100 backstroke – 1st place Alex Ballard – 200 individual medley – 2nd place; Alex Ballard – 100 backstroke – 2nd place Girls Team – 200 medley – 11th place Girls Team – 200 freestyle – 13th place Westmoore High School Dakota Wheeler, 100 butterfly – lst place; 100 breaststroke – lst Kimmie Reneau, 100 backstroke – 3rd place; 50 freestyle – 5th Boys Team – 200 medley relay – 15th place Boys Team – 400 freestyle relay – 14th place Congratulations are in order for Moore High School Football Coach, Steve Mancillas. He has been selected for induction into the Oklahoma Coaches Association Hall of Fame. This is the highest honor that a high school coach in Oklahoma can receive. He will be officially inducted this coming August at the Oklahoma Coaches Association Clinic in Tulsa. Coach Mancillas has been a coach and teacher at Moore High School for thirty years. In addition to his excellence as a football coach, Coach Mancillas is a highly regarded teacher in the district. Mr. Wright asked that item G of the CONSENT AGENDA be removed for a separate vote. Motion was then made by Mrs. Allen and seconded by Mr. Wright to approve all items listed on the CONSENT AGENDA with the exception of item G. Vote as follows: Allen Yes Painter Yes Shuey Yes Wright Yes Leemaster Yes Motion carried 5-0. Relative to item G, motion was made by Mrs. Allen and seconded by Dr. Painter to approve a Resolution for Schools and Libraries Universal Services (E-Rate) for 2010-2011. Vote as follows: Allen Yes Painter Yes Shuey Yes Wright Abstain Leemaster Yes Motion carried 4-0 with 1 abstention. Minutes 3/8/10 Page 6 Under BOARD DISCUSSION, Mr. Brad Fernberg, Asst. Supt. presented the district drop-out rates for Moore Public Schools as required by the Oklahoma State Department of Education. Pursuant to 25 O.S. Section 307(B)(1), motion was made by Mr. Wright and seconded by Mrs. Shuey to enter into executive session to discuss any or all of the items listed on the PERSONNEL CONSENT AGENDA and to discuss employment matters relative to items E through J under BOARD DISCUSSION AND ACTION.
