D R A F T M I N U T E S of the Moore Board of Education Regular Meeting Moore High School Lecture Center March 12, 2012 Dr. Leemaster, President of the Board of Education, called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m. Pursuant to the annual election of February 14, 2012, Larry Leemaster was sworn in as incumbent of Board Seat #2. Roll call was then taken as follows: Allen Here Painter Here Shuey Here Wright Here Leemaster Here The opening salute to the United States flag was led by Dr. Leemaster. Motion was then made by Mrs. Shuey and seconded by Mr. Wright to approve the agenda as presented with the inclusion of new business. Vote as follows: Allen Yes Painter Yes Shuey Yes Wright Yes Leemaster Yes Motion carried 5-0. Pursuant to state law, reorganization of the Board of Education was as follows: Motion was made by Mr. Wright and seconded by Dr. Leemaster to elect Jamey Allen as the president of the school board. Vote as follows: Allen Abstain Painter Yes Shuey Yes Wright Yes Leemaster Yes Motion carried 4-0 with 1 abstention. (Mrs. Allen then assumed the duties of the President for the remainder of the meeting). Motion was made by Dr. Leemaster and seconded by Mrs. Shuey to elect Mike Wright as vice president of the school board. Motion was made by Mr. Wright and seconded by Dr. Leemaster to appoint Vicki Brickman as Clerk of the Board. Vote as follows: Allen Yes Painter Yes Shuey Yes Wright Yes Leemaster Yes Motion carried 5-0. Under SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT: 1) Mrs. Pierce introduced Greg Mangus, Moore High School Band Director, and Mr. Mangus introduced Ben Browning, band drum major, who was wearing the proposed new band uniform. 2) Members of the Superintendent’s Advisory Council were acknowledged at the meeting and a certificate of appreciation given to those members who were in attendance. 3) Mrs. Pierce introduced Mike Coyle, Principal of Moore High School. Mr. Coyle introduced Bobby Chancellor, Moore High School junior, who scored a perfect 36 on the ACT. Further, Mrs. Pierce provided the following: Congratulations to fourth graders from Oakridge Elementary School. The following students gathered on a television set in the Old School building in Old Town Moore: Meredith Ebrey, Roarke Simpson, Brookelyn Sanchez, and Max Dilbeck. They were competing against students from Espanola, Canada on a new show entitled, Moore versus the World. This inaugural show aired in February. In future episodes Moore students from fourth, eighth and twelfth grades will be competing against students from South Africa, Great Britain and Japan. Allan Johnson, a former teacher, is the host and co-creator of the show. He developed the show based on his own experiences, and now he travels the world training educators from various school systems on how to be better teachers. Students from Moore FFA participated in the central district stock show on February 2-3. The results were: Swine: Meghan Moody 1st with a Hampshire, Brandon Franco 2nd with a cross, D R A F T Minutes 3/12/12 Page 3 Brenda Pena 4th with a chester white, Shannon Haynie 4th place with a duroc, Taylor Wilcoxson 8th place Hampshire, Zach Mathews 9th place Yorkshire, Cody Newman 10th place Yorkshire, Kaleb Schafler 6th place Crossbred. Sheep: Keirstin Bracelin 6th place Natural lamb, Savannah Melton 3rd place Southdown lamb, Kelsey Corn 2nd place Southdown. Goats: Cameron Reynolds 2nd place in the heavy division, Jordan Garrett 7th place in light weight division, Ciara Quine 3rd place in middleweight division, Tori Roper 3rd place heavyweight division, Micheala Baugh 4th middleweight division. Cattle, Sebrenna Burkes 1st and reserve breed champion Brangus heifer, Taylor Wilcoxson 3rd and 5th in commercial heifer class, Dustie Wise and Tara Baker 2nd in their class. Instructors attending the show were Tony Anderson, Carrie Jacobs, and Terry Wilhelm. Around 300 middle and high school students from Arkansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma and North Texas (35 teams) competed Saturday in the Oklahoma Regional Botball (Robotics) tournament in Norman. This was just Brink Jr. High’s 3rd year to sponsor a Botball (Robotics) team, and they placed 4th overall and won the Spirit Award. On February 25th the Brink Academic Team competed at a regional competition and won the championship. Congratulations to the team and to its sponsors, Maureen Connors and Gail Clark. The student computer technology team representing Westmoore High School placed second at the 4th annual OU Information Technology State competition March 2nd and 3rd. Each member of the team was awarded a $500 scholarship. Congratulations to: Joe Rollins, Quan Pham, Samuel Udo, and Andrew France. The team’s sponsor is Ben Straka. Congratulations to Deji Duggar of Fairview Elementary School for being named Oklahoma’s Outstanding Elementary Social Studies “Teacher of the Year” by the Oklahoma Council for the Social Studies. Congratulations to Andrea Brock, math teacher at West Jr. High for being selected as this year’s Mathematical Association of America “Teacher of the Year” for Oklahoma. Ms. Brock will be recognized at a banquet held at Henderson State University in Arkansas on March 30th. Congratulations to Laura Clay, Westmoore Girls’ Track and Cross Country coach, for being selected into the Oklahoma Coaches’ Association Hall of Fame. Ms. Clay is only the 2nd female to be honored with this induction. The ceremony will take place this coming July. Congratulations to the following students who placed at the 2012 State Wrestling Tournament: From Moore High: 4th place – Colby Moates 126 lbs McKale Washington – 152 lbs Derek Sivertsen – 170 lbs 6th place - Cameron Hofheimer – 145 lbs D R A F T Minutes 3/12/12 Page 4 From Westmoore: 3rd place - John Finn – 220 lbs Solomon Vanover – 195 lbs 4th place - Kyle Factor – Heavyweight 6th place - Keaton Randall – 120 lbs From Southmoore: STATE CHAMPION - Nathan Merek – 160 lbs 3rd place – Zac Damico – 113 lbs. This is the 3rd year that Southmoore has won. The Excellence in Education Ceremony will be held on March 27th at the Southmoore High School auditorium with a reception at 6:30 p.m. and the actual ceremony at 7:00. Motion was made by Mr. Wright and seconded by Dr. Painter to approve all of the items listed on the CONSENT AGENDA. Vote as follows: Allen Yes Painter Yes Shuey Yes Wright Yes Leemaster Yes Motion carried 5-0. There were no individuals wishing to address the Board of Education under COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT. Under BOARD REPORTS AND/OR DISCUSSION: D R A F T Minutes 3/12/12 Page 6 ● Pam Westbrook and Robert Romines, members of the Principals’ Evaluation Committee, presented information concerning the proposed pilot program for the 2012-2013 school year. ● Rick Cobb, Curriculum Director, presented proposed updates to the 2008-2014 Comprehensive Local Education Plan (CLEP). Motion was made by Mr. Wright and seconded by Dr. Leemaster to not enter into executive session. Vote as follows: Allen Yes Painter Yes Shuey Yes Wright Yes Leemaster Yes Motion carried 5-0. After a presentation by Chris Cochran, bond advisor, motion was made by Mrs. Shuey and seconded by Dr. Painter to approve a resolution authorizing the sale of a portion of the school district’s bonds authorized by the voters on February 8, 2011, setting the time and place the bonds are to be sold, setting the amount of bonds to mature each year, and authorizing the Clerk to give notice of said sale as required by law.
