M I N U T E S of the Moore Board of Education Regular Meeting Room 122, Administrative Services Center May 11, 2009 Jamey Allen, President of the Board of Education, called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m. She then asked the Clerk to call the roll. Roll call was as follows: Leemaster Absent Evans Here Larsen Here Painter Here Allen Here The opening flag salute was led by Brady McMurtry, 6th grade student from Southgate- Rippetoe Elementary School. Motion was made by Mr. Larsen and seconded by Dr. Evans to adopt the agenda as presented with the inclusion of NEW BUSINESS. Under SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT: Mrs. Arato presented Above and Beyond Awards to the following support personnel for their work above and beyond job expectations: Sharon Bray – office/media asst. at Northmoor Elementary School (could not be in attendance); Carol Ezell – paraprofessional at Sky Ranch Elementary School; Melissa Kirkham – paraprofessional at Winding Creek Elementary School; JayLynn Kooken – paraprofessional at Wayland Bonds Elementary School; Autumn McKinney – special education teacher assistant at Houchin Elementary School; Amalene Sanders – media assistant at Kelly Elementary School; and Shirley Walters – Custodian at Broadmoore Elementary School (could not be in attendance). Other news in the superintendent’s report: Lauren Fulkerson, a sixth grade student at Fisher Elementary, has been nominated for the “Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes”. This young lady was nominated because of her diligent efforts to revitalize Fisher’s outdoor school. Andrea Brock, 6th grade teacher at Kingsgate Elementary, received the South Oklahoma City Chamber of Commerce Teacher of the Year Award for 2008. Rozhane Hamilton, 4th grade student at Sky Ranch Elementary, won 4 tickets to see the Lion King and 4 free dinners at the OKC Museum Café from the Kennedy Center of Performing Arts. She was asked to write a response to a play and based upon her response, was selected as the first place winner. Minutes 5/11/09 Page 2 Congratulations to the following semi-finalists for district teacher of the year: Terry Hamra – Houchin Elementary; Andrea Brock – Kingsgate Elementary; Debbie Brewer - Bonds Elementary; Aimee Myers - Highland East Jr. High, and Brandon Wilmarth – Southmoore High School. Special congratulations to Debbie Brewer who was chosen as the district teacher of the year. Sue Kirk, lst grade teacher at Bonds Elementary, was chosen as the Ag in the Classroom National Teacher of the Year. David Findley and Karissa Miles from Westmoore High School were selected to compete at the International Science and Engineering Fair in Nevada. These students were chosen at the Central Oklahoma Regional Science Fair at UCO. Congratulations to Katlynn Craft and Savannah Melton from Southmoore High School for winning the Botany 9th grade Division at the State FFA Agriscience Fair. They will be representing the Oklahoma and Moore FFA Association at the National FFA Agriscience Fair in October. Congratulations to the following students for their academic achievement: MHS: Ashley Valentas, Academic All State SHS: Lauren Allen, Academic All State and National Merit Finalist WHS: David Postic, Academic All State and Vincent Vaughn, National Merit Finalist Student performers from the three high schools performed alongside the Oklahoma City Philharmonic on April 15th. Performing on the oboe was Cate Lynn from Westmoore High School; Jeanne Lynn from Westmoore performed on the Bassoon; Madison Robertson from Moore High School performed on the Horn and Cleon Chai from Southmoore High School performed on the Trumpet. Baccalaureate will be held on May 17th at 3:00 p.m. at Crossroads Cathedral for all three high schools. Graduation Dates: Moore High School May 21 7 p.m. Westmoore High School May 22 7 p.m. Southmoore High School May 23 4 p.m. Under COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT, the following individual addressed the board: . Denny Flick – Blunck’s Studios – Subject: School Day Picture Contract Mrs. Allen called the name of Anita Kuchera who had completed the form to address the board, however, Ms. Kuchera was not in attendance when her name was called. Motion was made by Mr. Larsen and seconded by Dr. Evans to approve all items on the Consent Agenda. Prior to the vote being taken, Mr. Larsen explained that in accordance with board policy, the board could only approve item CC (request to rent the Eastlake Elementary cafeteria by Living Word Fellowship) for an initial three-month period. (Secondary Education and Instruction) introduced Kathy Knowles, freshman principal at Moore High School, Jun Kim, freshman principal at Southmoore High School, and Ashley Davis, freshman principal at Westmoore High School. These three principals presented information concerning Link Crew Training (freshman transition program) at each high school. B. Mr. Robert Romines, Executive Director of Elementary Education and Instruction, presented facts and information concerning increasing student enrollment numbers at Bonds Elementary and decreasing student enrollment numbers at Earlywine Elementary School. He presented information supporting the need to change the school day start and end times at Earlywine Elementary School (from an early school to a late school) in order to help accommodate the overcrowding at Bonds Elementary School. Motion was made by Mr. Larsen and seconded by Dr. Evans to enter into executive session in accordance with 25 O.S. Section 307(B)(1) and (2) to discuss any or all of the items listed on the PERSONNEL CONSENT AGENDA, and to discuss employee contract negotiations. (The board reconvened in open session at 7:36 p.m.) Motion was made by Mr. Larsen and seconded by Dr. Evans to approve a contract for legal services between Phyllis Walta of Walta & Walta, Attorneys at Law, and the Moore School District for the 2009-2010 fiscal year. Motion was made by Mr. Larsen and seconded by Dr. Evans to approve a contract for legal services between McAfee and Taft and the Moore School District for the 2009-2010 fiscal year. Motion was made by Mr. Larsen and seconded by Dr. Evans to approve administration’s recommendation of open transfer requests for the 2009-2010 school year as listed on the letter of recommendation contained in the agenda. Motion was made by Mr. Larsen and seconded by Dr. Evans to approve a change order in the increased amount of $9,455.00 from EGR, Inc., for Southmoore High School. Motion was made by Mr. Larsen and seconded by Dr. Evans to approve a new job description entitled Junior High Title I Literacy Coach. Motion was made by Mr. Larsen and seconded by Dr. Evans to approve a change to job description #6.11, Boiler Operator Licensed (changing salary category from D to E). Motion was made by Mr. Larsen and seconded by Dr. Evans to approve additions and corrections to the 2006-2010 Professional Development Handbook. Motion was made by Mr. Larsen and seconded by Dr. Evans to approve contracting with Jostens as the district yearbook provider for school years 2009-2012.
