26th YEAR! President’s Message Steve Commander | 702.304.1768 | [email protected]

BKB congregants are the very best. To show our heartfelt gratitude, the Board of Directors does its utmost to continually beneft our entire congregation. We maintain very modest annual dues and have no building fund. With that said, there will be NO annual dues increase for July 2017 - June 2018. Terefore, kindly return the membership application as soon as possible when you receive it from our Membership Vice President Edith Einhorn. As you know, the dues accommodates our overall expenses which increase every year.

Our May 12th Temple service was wonderfully performed by Cantor Goldberg. I thank Executive Vice President Milt Goldstein and others for successfully handling the proceedings in my absence. May 26th combined a moving spiritual enlightenment by Cantor Friedmann and a Memorial Day observance. I would like to share a note from congregant Stuart Hess, “We will salute the Flags presented by a High School Honor Guard, sing the national anthem, and praise all the veterans who have courageously given their lives and the lives of their loved ones in the pursuit of all the freedoms we have today.”

A new BKB Tri-fold brochure has been created by our esteemed web master Steve Mevorah and your Board of Directors. Te brochures shines a bright light on BKB, Shabbat Services, Tradition and Commitment, High Holy Days, Seder, Chanukah Event, Spiritual and Social Experiences, Caring Support of Members and Family, Functions and Events, our Auxiliary Clubs and our Choir. Te brochure is a wonderful tool to enlighten members and non-members of the magnifcence of BKB. Concerning non-members, the brochure will be mailed to residents in Sun for their knowledge of BKB and possible joining of our Temple. Te brochure can also be used by congregants to share BKB with neighbors, friends and associates to ofer them spiritual meaning and camaraderie within our Temple.

Our Passover Seder was a wonderful spiritual and social event for 125 attendees. Tis year the Seder experienced a situation with part of the meal. To resolve this matter, I communicated with the Suncoast and came to a mutually benefcial solution. Te 125 attendees will each be ofered a $10 credit for the 2018 Seder only if they choose to attend. I believe this is a fair way to beneft those attendees.

Our Chanukah event was a great success. One of the auction items was the Wayne Newton Casa de Shenandoah Diamond tour that many congregants already greatly enjoyed. I was recently informed by the new management of changes. One change has to do with the tickets we were provided last year that will no longer be honored. However, a few new tickets will be sent to me for exchange with tickets that have not yet been used. Kindly let me know ASAP if you have an unused ticket for exchange.

Kindly partake in all the wonderful activities and events of our Men’s, Singles and Sisterhood Clubs as appropriate.

Our next Board of Directors meeting is scheduled for June 6th at Desert Vista @ 9:00am. I look forward to seeing you.

Last and certainly not least, much thanks to YOU, our wonderful congregation for sharing your Shabbos evenings with us and being a supporting member of Temple BKB.

Sincerely, Steve Commander, BKB President

1 BKB Newsletter June 2017 | BKBLV.org Cantor’s Corner Dr. Jonathan Friedmann, Cantor | 562.405.4176 [email protected] | jonathanfriedmann.com Simulated Silence | Cantor Jonathan Friedmann Our quietest surroundings are brimming with sound. Te modern world is cluttered with humming freeways, droning light bulbs, vibrating appliances, buzzing electrical wires, and countless other incessant noises. Tese acoustic waves are so constant that we tend to block them out. But if we listen closely in a quiet bedroom or library, there they are (around 30 decibels worth). Likewise, remote habitats free of humanity’s sonic stamp—which are few and far between—are home to a variety of natural sounds. Absolute silence is simply not a feature of our planet.

Te foreignness of pure quiet is on full display at Orfeld Laboratories in Minneapolis, a location certifed by Guinness as the world’s quietest place. Te lab’s anechoic (echo-free) chamber absorbs 99.9 percent of sound, with its mesh fooring, double-walls of concrete and steel, and lining of fberglass acoustic wedges. Manufacturers use the chamber to gauge the volume of switches, triggers, and other components of their products.

Founder Steven Orfeld challenges visitors to sit in the chamber with the lights of for as long as they can. Most give up before twenty minutes; no one has lasted longer than forty-fve. Orfeld himself struggles to endure beyond the half-hour mark. Te reason for this is that the brain, so used to fltering out environmental sounds, turns inward. It starts picking up the pumping heart, pulsating lungs, digestive gurgles, and creaking joints. Te efect is so disorienting that participants invariably tap out. Absolute silence disturbs absolutely.

Te anechoic chamber proves that there is no escaping sound. Even when auditory stimuli are sucked from our surroundings, we have the hubbub within. Tus, the ordinary quiet we long for is not dead silence, but relative silence. It is the absence of grating, high-decibel, out-of-place, and otherwise unwelcome noises. Relative silence is highly coveted in part because it is rare: not only is the atmosphere flled with subtle rumblings, it is also host to noticeable sonic intrusions.

One way to create a gratifying impression of silence is by contrasting attention-grabbing sounds with sudden stillness. Tis is best accomplished with music. Minimally defned, music is the art of arranging sound and silence—that is, tones and spaces between tones. Of course, the juxtaposition of structured sound and calculated quiet is more pronounced in some pieces than others, as the tempo and spirit of the music allows for longer or shorter rests.

However, in almost all cases there is room to prolong the moment immediately following the music, thereby creating the perception of silence. Such potent pauses occur whenever audiences hold their applause afer a piece concludes, and in ceremonial settings when there are breaks between song and spoken word. Whether the music ceases abruptly or gradually fades into nothingness, it sets the stage for a pleasing audible quiet rarely discerned in our day-to-day lives.

BKB Newsletter April 2017 | BKBLV.org 2 Ritual Sydell Miller | 702.363.1068 | [email protected] During the month of June the following Parchats will be read in temples and synagogues all over the world. NASSO, , SHLACH and

Parchat Nasso is Hebrew for “Take a census.” It addresses priestly duties, purifying the camp, restitution for wrongs committed, the wife accused of unfaithfulness (Sotah), the Nazirite, the priestly blessings, the consecration of the and the census of the tribes. Te Haforah for this parchat is the beautiful story of the birth of Samson, the Nazirite.

Parchat BEHAALOTECHA means in Hebrew “when you step up.” Tis parchat sets out some of the laws of Passover, tells of the Lampstand in the Tabernacle, the consecration of the Levites, the Second Passover, how a cloud and fre led the , the silver trumpet, how the Israelites set out on their journeys and how they constantly complained and how Miriam and (’ sister and brother) questioned Moses.

Parchat SHLACH is the Hebrew for “send”. Tis parchat tells the story of sent to assess the . God told Moses to send one chiefain from each of the 12 tribes to Israel to scout the land of . Moses asked for an assessment of the geographical features of the land. He also asked them to be positive in their outlook and return with samples of local produce. When they returned only and brought a positive report. Te other spies made the community afraid. Tey rebelled against GOD. GOD punished the Israelites and they would wander in the desert for forty years.

Parchat KORACH tells us of a rebellion where Korach, who was a cousin of Moses, felt he should be the head of the Kohathite clan.

In reading all of these parchats we see it was not easy to be Moses and a leader. Tere were constantly problems which he had to face up to. Whether you are a leader of a corporation, a club, a religious organization, a family, military, politician in today’s society, life is not easy and think of poor Moses. So embrace everything you have and thank GOD in your prayers. Singles Group Helene Orenstein, President | 702.228.0948 | [email protected]

You can, however, mark your calendars for our upcoming fall holiday events. Wednesday, September 20 we will get together for an Erev dinner prior to services (time and place to be announced). And as is our tradition, we will celebrate Sukkot with a “dinner under the stars” Sunday, October 8th.

During the summer hiatus, many events occur that would be of interest to our group. If you would like to host one, please feel free to either e-mail me at [email protected] or leave a voice message at 702-763-4117. I’ll be happy to help you with the announcement of the event. Have a great summer!

3 BKB Newsletter April 2017 | BKBLV.org Men’s Club Alan Rosenberg | 702.242.3886 | [email protected] On April 30th Te Men’s Club hosted our Fun Bowl event at the Suncoast . We had 22 bowlers and 8 persons attended the champagne brunch at the Suncoast Bufet. I was disappointed at the turnout, but even the bowlers who said that they hadn’t bowled in 20 years had fun. I guess it’s like riding a bike, you never forget how. Te bufet was plentiful and the champagne fowed like water. Every bowler received a Suncoast cap and every bowler received a rafe ticket to win a bowling tee shirt. We rafed of 10 shirts. I believe a good time was had by all. Our Sunday breakfast meeting was held on May 7th. Ladies were invited . We had a total attendance of 48 people. Our speaker was Doris Poders-Barsky. She spoke on fall prevention and balance. Her talk was very informative , and she supplemented it by a hand out picturing what should be done in the rooms of your house to avoid falling and a print out with more information. Our next Sunday Breakfast meeting will be held on June 4th . Te topic of Te Basics of Dementia will be presented by a representative of the Alzheimer’s Association based at the Cleveland Clinic. Te ladies that attended our May meeting wanted to be in attendance, so ladies will be invited to attend the June meeting.A sign up sheet will be at Friday Services. Te Men’s Club will be providing ushers for our High Holliday Services. I need volunteers . A sign up sheet will be at Friday night services . Our 4th annual Bingo Luncheon on May 24 was a great success! We had a sell-out crowd and enriched our treasury by over $300.00

Our last meeting before summer break is on Wednesday, June 28, at Desert Vista. Our own Sydell Miller will present a program about the history of our sisterhood. Sydell has been saving material for the past 20+ years. Just think about how young we looked 20 years ago. Come for an interesting and informative program, a complimentary breakfast, and goodies from Shelly’s kitchen.

We are already planning a great event that will take the place of our regular meeting in September. September 6-7, 2017, is our frst annual trip to the Tuacahn Amphitheater outside of St. George Utah.

Also remember Sue Schweitzer will be selling jars of kosher for Rosh Hashanah in the lobby before every Service starting April 28 through August 11. Arlene Gold is still accepting $25 donations for our Oneg in July and August.

Te Sisterhood is a very important organization that supports the interests of women members of BKB and supports our synagogue monetarily. Every year we donate thousand of dollars to the BKB treasury. Our largest fundraiser is our Sisterhood Luncheon which will once again be held at the JW Marriott Hotel in November. Tat date is still to be announced. Te committee chairwomen is Shelley Melcer, and she is asking for volunteers to help her make this luncheon a success. She needs people to solicit gifs for the rafe, decorate tables, fnalize the menu, etc. Please call her at 702-228-4041 to help make this luncheon a great success.

5 BKB Newsletter June 2017 | BKBLV.org Tzedakah/R. Guild Gray School Hershel Aron, Chair

Tis month is all about food. 729 pounds of food. Tat amount is a record but it did not just happen, it was a joint efort between our BKB family, poker players from the Suncoast, Te Suncoast Management and an idea. Te Suncoast was approached to hold a poker tournament to support a local food bank. Te answer was a big “YES” and that idea came to a conclusion in late April. During the tournament Bill Boyd,Jr. and the Suncoast General Manager wished the players well. We had 53 players, more than the Suncoast had ever had. Te Suncoast donated food and other items to make this event a great success. Each player donated two cans of food. Te next poker event at the Suncoast will be JULY 22 at 10am. Te Jewish Family Services Food Bank gave a big thanks to BKB for the food.

School: All of the feld trips have been completed and thanks to our beloved BKB family we funded 4 school buses to transport the kids to the Smith Center. Our school volunteers escorted the kids. Just imagine the excitement of the kids going to their frst live theater event! Teir energy wore me out but afer a nap I was good to go.

Please check the dates on donated food items, we again received food from 2003, that’s old and it goes into the trash.

If you want to help, bring good food or give a check to BKB and denote on the check that you want to support the BKB sponsored food bank, the school or the veterans.

We work to ensure that all congregants are reminded of the yahrzeits of their loved ones, and that the yahrzeits are acknowledged at the appropriate dates during services.

When new members join BKB, the membership chairperson sends me their yahrzeit list, which is entered into a special sofware program. Prior to each month, I print yahrzeit reminder letters, which Lynn addresses and mails to congregants. Tese letters include the date of the yahrzeit, when the yahrzeit will be acknowledged at a Shabbat service, and an opportunity to contribute to BKB in their loved ones’ memory.

Prior to each service, we create and send a list of the appropriate yahrzeits to the Cantor and President, to be read prior to Kaddish. All yahrzeits from the 1st through the 15th of the month are read at the frst service of the month and the rest of the yahrzeits are read at the 2nd service.

It is a mitzvah to honor the memory of our loved ones through Tzedakah. When a contribution is made to BKB in acknowledgement of a yahrzeit, the Treasurer informs me and I submit that contribution for inclusion in the next BKB Newsletter.

If we have somehow missed one of your yahrzeits, please feel free to call (702-228-6576) or email Lynn ([email protected]) or me ([email protected]) to let us know. We know how important this is to you and we take our role seriously.

12 Chavurot Return to BKB Te word chavurah comes from the word chaver, meaning friend. A chavurah is a small group of individuals who gather together for a variety of reasons: to socialize, celebrate Jewish holidays, learn more about , and participate in social action projects. You and the other members of your Chavurah determine the activities, which may include both family activities and adult get-togethers. Events enjoyed by diferent Chavurot have included picnics, museum outings, sporting events, holiday celebrations, potlucks, exploring new restaurants, game nights, Shabbat services and hikes, among many others.

Trough our Chavurah Program, BKB ofers members another opportunity to get to know, and develop relationships with, other families within our congregation. As part of a Chavurah, you will get together with other members in a small group setting. While having fun at social events and holiday celebrations, you will strengthen your connection to the community and make lasting friendships. Particularly in today’s world, our members fnd forming these meaningful connections to be of great value. We encourage all of our members to join a Chavurah.

Most importantly, a chavurah provides an opportunity for you to meet others who share your values and interests. • Social activities • Celebrate Jewish holidays together • Social action projects • Travel together • Your Chavurah becomes your extended family • Create secure and constant ties to the wider Jewish community

New Chavurot are now being formed. Whether you are single or married, we will get you started on the path to building new lasting friendships. For more information, please contact us. Cathy and David Weiss Cathy: (949) 812-9633 [email protected] David: (949) 742-0625 [email protected]
