Minutes of the North American Branch (NAB) of the International Arthurian Society Business Meeting held on May 5, 2000 at 12:00 noon in Valley III 308 (Medieval Institute International Congress, Kalamazoo, MI): The meeting was called to order by A. Lupack, presiding. The agenda as published in the Summer 2000 nab news (Round Table section of arthuriana 10.2) was approved. The reading of the minutes of the May 7, 1999 Business Meeting (as published in the Fall 1999 Round Table [arthuriana 9.3]) was waived, and the minutes were approved. Secretary-Treasurer’s Report: J. Grimbert read the nab Financial Statement for April 19, 1999-April 18, 2000, which was duly approved. In response to the Secretary- Treasurer’s report, a discussion of the necessity and advisability of raising dues was opened by the President. The questions raised by members present included whether dues should be raised for emeriti from $28 to $33; for students from $28 to $30; for institutions from $18 to $20; and whether international members should be charged the additional cost of postage, according to a preference for surface or air shipping. A vote on the latter suggestion was deferred. Three increases were moved, seconded, and passed by a show of hands: a raise in membership fees for students from $28 to $30, for emeriti from $28 to $33, and for institutions from $18 to $20. The President thanked J. Grimbert for her six years of excellent service as Secretary- Treasurer of the ias/nab, and introduced J. Blacker, who has accepted the invitation to serve in that capacity, subject to approval by the Executive Committee. Kalamazoo 2001: nab Sessions: The members voted on and approved four sessions: 1) Saracens, D. Hoffman, organizer; 2) Arthurian Tradition in Children’s Literature, J. Kellogg, organizer; 3) Arms, Armor, and Identity, C. Dover, organizer; and 4) Lancelot and Guinevere in Film, D. Armstrong, organizer. It was announced that the reception sponsored jointly by the ias/nab and the Tristan Society would be held later that day, Friday, May 5, at 5:30 p.m. in Valley II, Room 200, and the Tristan Society business meeting at 5:00 p.m. in Valley II, Room 203. Report of the Editor of Arthuriana: 1. Arthuriana: B. Wheeler introduced C. Grooms, Webmaster; D. Armstrong will continue as Marketing Manager, but from her new position at California State University, Long Beach. The volume of essays in memory of Maureen Fries, edited by F. Tolhurst and B. Wheeler, is currently in preparation; inquiries welcome. Future special issues include those to be edited by K. Harty and F. Ackerman. 2. James Randall Leader Prize: P. McCracken announced that the recipient of this year’s prize for outstanding article in the previous year’s arthuriana was Andrew Lynch for his article, ‘Malory Moralisé: The Disarming of Le Morte Darthur, 1800- 1918,’ (9:4, 81–93). Many members expressed concern that the growth of the congress at Kalamazoo has resulted in an unusually large number of scheduling conflicts, and the President was asked if the ias/nab could officially voice its concern. A discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of drafting a formal letter of complaint led to the conclusion that a less formal approach suggested by and to be implemented by the President might prove both more politic as well as more effective. Following a reminder that the next triennial meeting of the IAS will be held in Bangor, Wales in 2002, the meeting was adjourned at 1 p.m. Call for Papers: Arthurian Studies at Kalamazoo: 36th International Congress on Medieval Studies. There is a moderated line in the list to allow more structured conversation for those who wish to engage in it. Details of the moderated list are broadcast on-line. Any scholar willing to act as a discussion moderator is asked to contact Assistant Editor Judy Shoaf ([email protected]) with potential topics and timetables.
