NOTES Introduction: To Be a Shapeshifter 1 . Sir Thomas Malory, Malory: Works , ed. Eugene Vinaver (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1978 ), 716. 2 . Carolyne Larrington, for example, points out that “Enchantresses . sometimes . support the aims of Arthurian chivalry, at other times they can be hostile and petty-minded.” See King Arthur’s Enchantresses: Morgan and Her Sisters in Arthurian Tradition (New York: I. B. Taurus, 2007), 2. While Larrington’s book provides a review of many of Morgan’s literary appearances, my study focuses on close reading, attention to translation issues, and discussion of social concerns. In her review of Larrington’s King Arthur’s Enchantresses: Morgan and Her Sisters in Arthurian Tradition , Elizabeth Archibald laments that “it would have been interesting to hear more about the ways in which Arthurian enchantresses do or do not resemble their Classical precursors, or indeed Celtic ones, in their use of magic and in their challenges to male heroic norms.” See Elizabeth Archibald, “Magic School,” Times Literary Supplement (February 2, 2007), 9. My study answers this cri- tique by reexamining pivotal scenes in critical texts and by dismantling the archetypal approach that Larrington follows. 3 . Norris J. • Adaptation and Translation Between French and English Arthurian Romance" (Under the Direction of Edward Donald Kennedy)
Varieties in Translation: Adaptation and Translation between French and English Arthurian Romance Euan Drew Griffiths A dissertation submitted to the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of English and Comparative Literature. Chapel Hill 2013 Approved by: Edward Donald Kennedy Madeline Levine E. Jane Burns Joseph Wittig Patrick O'Neill © 2013 Euan Drew Griffiths ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii Abstract EUAN DREW GRIFFITHS: "Varieties in Translation: Adaptation and Translation between French and English Arthurian Romance" (Under the direction of Edward Donald Kennedy) The dissertation is a study of the fascinating and variable approaches to translation and adaptation during the Middle Ages. I analyze four anonymous Middle English texts and two tales from Sir Thomas Malory’s Le Morte Darthur that are translations and adaptations of Old French Arthurian romances. Through the comparison of the French and English romances, I demonstrate how English translators employed a variety of techniques including what we might define as close translation and loose adaptation. Malory, in particular, epitomizes the medieval translator. The two tales that receive attention in this project illustrate his use of translation and adaptation. Furthermore, the study is breaking new ground in the field of medieval studies since the work draws on translation theory in conjunction with textual analysis. Translation theory has forged a re-evaluation of translation as a literary medium. Using this growing field of research and scholarship, we can enhance our understanding of translation as it existed during the Middle Ages.

Despite some serious reservations about this classroom video, my first reaction to it was something akin to wonder as I flashed back to the truly deadly documentaries to which I was subjected as a schoolchild: black-and-white films with dreary, ideology- laden scripts sadistically intoned by an inflectionless male voice, on topics of no conceivable interest to most adults, much less to a classroom full of captive youngsters. Set against these blessedly bygone ‘educational’ films, this video is a class act. It’s loaded with visual interest, featuring a lively succession of images and some stunning photography. The script, mellifluously narrated by Donald Sutherland, is unusually literate, even in comparison with the best contemporary documentaries; although it teeters on the brink of hyperbole, the narration is rhetorically effective and on occasion even rises to eloquence. The producers have assembled a bevy of Arthurian Big Guns: Geoffrey Ashe, Derek Brewer, Norris Lacy, and Peter Field, all of whom bespeak themselves admirably. Collectively, this quartet of authorities establishes a judicious stance towards the matter of Arthur in general, and Arthur’s historicity in particular, that appears to have permeated the script proper, which, rather than trying to ‘sell’ King Arthur as an historical figure, instead emphasizes the legendary nature of the matter of Arthur. • “Strange Woman Lying in a Pond”: the Lady of the Lake's A
The Honors College at the University of Missouri-Kansas City A “Strange Woman Lying in a Pond”: The Lady of the Lake’s Authority over the Male Arthurian World in the Prose Lancelot Annie Spencer May 19, 2020 Written under the direction of Dr. Virginia Blanton Department of English, College of Arts and Sciences A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements to graduate as an Honors Scholar from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. 1 Abstract: This study examines the character of the Lady of the Lake in the Old French Prose Lancelot and argues that the Lady of the Lake gains power and authority through the use of her knowledge (both traditional learning and the knowledge of enchantments) to exert influence that directly affects the male Arthurian world. Her occupation of a liminal space—the lake outside of Camelot—allows the Lady of the Lake to perceive the challenges and shortcomings of the male chivalric world. Significantly, she establishes herself as an authorial voice; a voice that uses her foreknowledge in order to rewrite social codes to establish a better framework for the men who occupy this martial space. Her dissemination of knowledge and the effective use of her powers not only teach knights proper conduct, but they also encourage knights to rely on her authority. In this liminal position, therefore, the Lady of the Lake exerts considerable influence that benefits others but her efforts are not entirely altruistic, for they benefit the Lady as well giving her status and unquestioned authority. She becomes an archetype of the Wise (Wo)Man, seizing the mantle from Merlin after she figuratively and literally disposes of him at the beginning of the Prose Lancelot.
