Jeff Coffin may have resigned as Secretary but he has not left the Commodore’s Report committee and he will continue to be a fully active member of our organisation. Many thanks to you, Jeff, for your contribution to our Kia ora. Tena Koutou. club as Secretary and for your continuing loyalty to the club.

This week is Maori Language week (Te wiki o te reo maori). We Thanks to our enthusiastic membership but especially thanks to have three official languages in this country, namely English, Te the activities of Ian Wallace and Chantal Grass, our sailing club Reo Maori and New Zealand Sign Language. We do not use continues to thrive and develop. We have a growing fleet of Laser Maori language very much in our daily lives if we are Pakeha New and a growing membership of people to sail them. These Zealanders or recent immigrants but it surrounds us as part of our people vary in gender and in ability and in age and nationality culture and we should regard it as a national treasure, recognise from young Italians to ageing Welshmen, Russians, Japanese, it, learn about it, learn it. Americans, French, English, Bulgarian, Zambian, English and even a few New Zealanders. Panmure Lagoon is important to us for our sailing activities but it is also important to tangata whenua as Te Wai Mokoia watched over by its guardian spirit, the taniwha, Te Moko Ika a Hiku Waru. This taniwha is not particularly conspicuous to us as insensitive pakeha, trying to coax more boat speed from the capricious winds on the lagoon, but it is particularly important to Maori as the guardian of Van Damme’s Lagoon, which feeds fresh water into the northwestern corner of Panmure Basin. One of the significant changes in our club this year is that we have become affiliated to New Zealand. This is something that we have contemplated for several years and now we have made the decision to join. There are several benefits for Panmure Lagoon Sailing Club in being affiliated to Yachting NZ, including the ability to compete in national regattas as members of PLSC. We can also now enjoy some of the training and administrative resources that are available from Yachting NZ. We can also contribute our voice and our views to the national body as part of the organisation.

Shaaron, Pink lady rigging for our outing on the Manukau. Particular thanks again to our Club Captain Ian Wallace, Vice Commodore Chantal Grass, Treasurer (and new Life Member) I am looking forward to some more adventures on the water. Merlin Caskie and retiring Secretary Jeff Coffin, for their Wishing you a great Winter, with some nice sailing stories to tell contributions to the club this year. Others of us have done our bit around a nice warm fire. but these four have been outstanding - again. We also thank Julian White for his regular appearances on the bridge this year – Chantal Grass, Vice Commodore he has made Merlin’s job much easier.

William Perry, Commodore Club Captain’s Report

Since my last report way back in those months when the sun Vice Commodore’s Report shone & the warm air wafted through our sails sending those steeds gallivanting around the Lagoon; Winter has come & with it The whistling cold winds are back, Winter has arrived and there is a gallant fleet which matches & at times exceeds the Summer no stopping our members, you have the regular migratory types numbers. We are now seeing a very tough bunch at the head of trying to bathe in some sun for a short while and who are now the fleet doing battle on a regular basis, led by Dario & Don. We back: Claire and Graham, Jock (he sent a lovely account of his are also seeing a surge in female numbers to join Chantal, trip), Ian and I in India while all the others brave the full PLSC Shaaron, Claire, Amy, Akemi and Vessie. We welcome Sophie & Winter racing season. Hardy souls our members, who are flocking Lora to our illustrious ranks. on our basin at each Winter race. What a great turnout this year, keep it up! Since the last newsletter the Fresh Waters at Pupuke has come & gone with 6 members pitting their skills in a fleet of about 40 The water is cold, I can testify to this with my latest capsize two Lasers split into Radial & Full rig. Great result achieved by all. weeks ago. It seems I have perfected my capsizes this year, so Well done!! much that I received the Senior PLSC capsize trophy and at the last Fresh Waters Regatta on Lake Pupuke in May, a prize of a bottle of wine for the most capsizes. (8 in total. Come on! it was over 2 days of nasty chilly south western winds). Now that I have mastered this art, I am happy to share my knowledge. Just let me know.

From my side what is warming me up this winter is the upcoming Club racing days as well as my many memories of India with Ian and my last autumn days spent in Little Huia with some great friends on the very last warm weekend. I had a fun girl’s laser outing with Shaaron on the Manukau, wow can that harbour be rough, when it takes her fancy. PLSC contingent arriving at the Freshwaters

Intrepid Shaaron joined us a few days earlier from that outing at Talking about skill levels, these are rapidly improving which is Little Huia alone on her laser from Waiuku, on a very, very calm, showing up with some quite tight racing lately. The provisional date set for this is

The club is now becoming well known & is beginning to earn quite a lot of respect around Laser community, to the extent that other clubs are doing their utmost not to have major events clashing with ours. There are a couple of Laser events coming up before the end of the year which some of you might like to attend & if so we can make arrangements for boats. The Club applied in April to join Yachting New Zealand & is now an official member of the National body. What this means for the Your Club Captain, Ian Club is that we can now enter any National or International Regatta under Panmure Lagoon Sailing Club. Other advantages are various courses eg., coaching, race management etc., plus Our members’ antics we have another avenue for publicity & have through representatives a say in the future direction of yachting in New Zealand It was great to have a good turnout at the Freshwaters from our Club: Shaaron, Dario, Ian, Chantal, Don and Jeff. Dario did really th rd Sponsors: well coming 4 overall in the Standard division and Jeff 3 in the I must also mention our Sponsors who have been a vital key to Radials. Well done guys! Jeff won a jacket. Half Moon Bay generously in May funded a new Mercury 15 hp out board motor. What a vast difference in performance & reliability

which has been a real boon. Dario Motta with the orange top on the far left at the Freshwater Regatta – Photo from Laser Association We thank you both for your unstinting support of our Cub & what we are striving to achieve. In a totally different event, Ian Young came second (KZ93) in the New Zealand Formula Nationals at Manly Yacht Club. Congrats! News: We hope to see him practicing his prowess on the basin.  Dario went back to Sicily  Don has gallivanted around Italy  Jock & Jan have rambled Croatia & Sicily  Graham & Claire have dabbled their toes in UK & America not to mention a cruise on a Keeler in the Mediterranean  Paul has bought a new boat, so watch out for he definitely is on the war path.  Ian Young came 2nd in the Formula Nationals ( Wind Surfing)  Chantal is now familiar with India. Page 3 of 14 Jock and Jan to Sicily and Croatia

Why Sicily and Croatia? Our son Jon did an America’s Cup series in Sicily and said it was great! Croatia-as close friends of ours came from there.

We really enjoyed both in spite of a heat wave going on the whole time we were away. Daily temperatures averaged 35 degrees C –

Ian Young at the New Zealand Formula Nationals – Photo from one day 45 !! www.windsurfingnz.org The first place we stayed in Palermo Sicily was in a restored Jeff went down to what is now becoming a yearly event for him to Palace of a Duchess, who was an excellent cook (takes cooking the Queen’s Birthday Regatta (2nd to 3rd of June) at the Port classes) and she invited us to a special luncheon. This and a tour Ohope Yacht Club. He came 5th overall. It is a very friendly event of the palace made us feel very privileged. We have “Marco” our having been there once with Ian and Shaaron and if you wish to guide for the next five days in a Mercedes air conditioned (thank compete next year, just go and see Jeff. goodness) car. We visited many archaeological sites with interesting history – Jan made notes in her diary – I had trouble absorbing it all!

The views around the Mediterranean –crystal special blue waters were stunning. We came to a little village by the sea “Castellammare del Golfo” that took my breath away- I commented to Jan “I could live here!”We had another guide who took us on a Wilderness and Baroque Tour in his 1950 Land Rover. He shouted us a typical Sicilian lunch- rather heavy in the heat! We had another driver take us high up Mt Etna and we saw the devastation larva flows can cause.

We to Croatia and have four days relaxing in beautiful small village Primostein. Lots of and eating! We next went on Jeff Coffin far left with all the competitors in front of the Port Ohope Yacht Club. Photo from POYC. a seven day Grand Tour of Croatia, in a bus with thirteen others. We visited Split, Dubrovnik, Mostar, Sarajevo, Vukovar and Zagreb. Lots of interesting history but most interesting to us was the recent 1991-1995 devastation and massacre of so many. Our lovely guide was in tears as she showed us a cemetery in Vukovar- so many really young Croats killed.
